Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew Lily’s Secret
The sound upstairs came again.
A slow creak.
Then another.
Someone was walking.
Inside my house.
My first instinct was simple.
Protect Lily.
Everything else disappeared.
The mystery.
The lies.
The wedding.
Claire.
Emily.
All of it became secondary.
I pulled Lily behind me.
“Stay close.””
Her hands grabbed the back of my shirt.
“Daddy…”
“I’m here.””
Daniel moved toward the staircase.
I grabbed his arm.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“What?””
“You don’t know who’s up there.””
Neither of us spoke.
Because we both knew.
Whoever had entered the house had done it quietly.
They had bypassed the alarm.
They had gotten past the locked doors.
They knew exactly where they were going.
The person upstairs wasn’t lost.
They were searching.
Then a shadow moved across the wall.
A figure appeared at the top of the stairs.
A woman.
She stopped.
The faint light from Daniel’s phone illuminated her face.
And my heart dropped.
Because she looked familiar.
Not because I knew her.
Because I had seen her before.
In photographs.
In videos.
In reflections.
She had the same eyes as Claire.
The same blonde hair.
But she looked older.
Harder.
Like life had carved anger into her face.
Claire whispered behind me.
“Rebecca.””
The woman smiled.
Not warmly.
Not kindly.
Like she had been waiting years for this exact moment.
“Hello, Claire.””
The way she said the name made my skin crawl.
Not like a mother saying her daughter’s name.
Like someone claiming ownership.
I stepped forward.
“You need to leave.””
Rebecca looked at me.
Then at Lily.
Her expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“There she is.””
My body tensed.
“Stay away from my daughter.””
Rebecca tilted her head.
“Your daughter?””
A small smile appeared.
“That’s exactly what Emily wanted you to believe.””
Lily buried her face against my back.
I felt anger rise through me.
“Do not say my wife’s name.””
Rebecca’s eyes moved to me.
“Your wife knew more than you ever did.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Stop.””
Rebecca laughed quietly.
“Still protecting him?””
“You need to go.””
“No.””
Rebecca looked around the room.
“This is where everything ended.””
I stared at her.
“What are you talking about?””
She ignored me.
Instead, she looked at Claire.
“You told him.””
Claire didn’t answer.
Rebecca’s smile faded.
“You actually told him.””
Her voice became colder.
“After everything I did to keep this hidden.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Mark, we need to call the police.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“Daniel Foster.””
He froze.
My eyes moved toward him.
“You know him?””
Rebecca smiled.
“I know everyone around Mark.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you should ask your friend why he never told you about the investigation.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What investigation?””
He looked away.
And that tiny movement made my stomach drop.
“Daniel?””
He didn’t answer.
Rebecca smiled.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“The moment when everyone realizes they’ve been lied to.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Talk.””
He swallowed.
“Mark…”
“Talk.””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“I knew Emily was investigating something.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“You knew?””
“I didn’t know everything.””
“You knew my wife was afraid?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because she asked me not to.””
I stared.
“Emily asked you?””
Daniel nodded.
“She said if anything happened to her, I needed to protect you and Lily.””
My heart pounded.
“Protect us from what?””
Daniel looked at Rebecca.
“From her.””
Rebecca didn’t look angry.
She looked disappointed.
“That’s what Emily told you?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“That’s what happened.””
Rebecca laughed.
A cold, empty laugh.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“That’s what Emily believed happened.””
The room went silent.
I felt trapped between three people.
Three versions of the truth.
And I had no idea who was holding the real one.
“Why are you here?”” I asked Rebecca.
Her expression softened slightly.
“I came to take Lily.””
The words made my entire body react.
“No.””
“I’m not here to hurt her.””
“You’re not taking her anywhere.””
Rebecca looked at Lily.
“She doesn’t know what she is.””
Claire stepped in front of me.
“Don’t listen to her.””
Rebecca looked at Claire.
“You still don’t understand.””
“I understand enough.””
“No, you don’t.””
Rebecca’s eyes became colder.
“You never understood why Emily died.””
The room froze.
I stepped forward.
“What did you just say?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Emily didn’t die because she discovered my secrets.””
She paused.
“She died because she discovered yours.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
Claire looked shocked.
Even she didn’t expect that.
Rebecca continued.
“Emily spent months searching through records.””
“What records?””
“Family records.””
My hands curled into fists.
“What family records?””
Rebecca looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“The ones showing that Lily’s birth was not what you were told.””
My mind went blank.
“No.””
Rebecca sighed.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
She took a step down the stairs.
“But nobody asks the important question.””
“What question?””
“Why would Emily hide the truth from you?””
I looked at Claire.
Then Daniel.
Then Rebecca.
“Because she wanted to protect me?””
Rebecca smiled sadly.
“That’s what she told herself.””
The lights suddenly flickered.
For a second, the room went bright.
Then dark again.
When the light returned, Rebecca was holding something.
A folder.
Old.
Worn.
My eyes locked onto it.
“Where did you get that?””
Rebecca looked down.
“From the place Emily hid it.””
Claire’s face changed.
“No.””
Rebecca looked at her.
“Yes.””
“What is it?””
Rebecca walked down another step.
“The truth about Lily.””
I moved closer.
“Give me the folder.””
Rebecca didn’t move.
“You want answers?””
“Yes.””
“Then listen carefully.””
She held the folder against her chest.
“Seven years ago, Emily discovered that someone had changed Lily’s records.””
My heart stopped.
“Changed?””
“Yes.””
“For what reason?””
Rebecca looked at Claire.
Then back at me.
“Because Lily was never supposed to be connected to you.””
The words felt impossible.
I shook my head.
“She’s my daughter.””
Rebecca’s expression didn’t change.
“I know.””
“Then what are you saying?””
She opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
She held it up.
A hospital room.
A newborn baby.
Emily holding the child.
And beside her…
A woman.
A woman with the same face as Claire.
Rebecca spoke softly.
“That baby was born with a secret.””
I stared at the picture.
Because I recognized the hospital.
I recognized the room.
I recognized Emily.
But there was one detail I couldn’t explain.
The date.
The date printed on the photograph.
It was seven years ago.
The day Lily was born.
And beneath the photograph was a name.
Not Lily Hayes.
Not Claire.
Not Emily.
A different name.
A name that made Claire cover her mouth in horror.
Because she recognized it.

And then Rebecca said:
“Mark, your daughter’s real identity is the reason Emily was killed.””
