Chapter 3: The Secret Behind Emily’s Name
Claire’s phone kept ringing.
The sound cut through St. Andrew’s Chapel like an alarm.
Nobody moved.
Nobody even whispered.
Everyone was waiting for her to answer.
Claire looked down at the screen, and I watched the color disappear from her face.
It wasn’t the expression of someone receiving an unexpected call.
It was the expression of someone seeing a ghost.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
Claire locked her phone immediately.
“No one.””
The answer came too fast.
My eyes narrowed.
“Your phone just rang.””
“It’s nothing important.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Then why do you look terrified?””
Claire looked at him sharply.
“You need to stop.””
But Daniel didn’t back away.
Not this time.
“Mark deserves answers.””
The guests were still watching us.
Some looked uncomfortable.
Some looked curious.
Some looked like they had already decided something terrible had happened.
I hated that.
I hated that my wedding had turned into a public investigation.
But more than anything, I hated that I no longer knew who stood in front of me.
I looked at Claire.
“Answer the phone.””
Her lips parted.
“Mark—”
“Answer it.””
A long silence followed.
Then the phone rang again.
Claire stared at it.
Finally, she pressed decline.
My stomach dropped.
“Why didn’t you answer?””
“Because this isn’t the place.””
“Then where is the place?””
She looked around.
Her eyes moved over the guests.
Over the priest.
Over Lily.
Then back to me.
“Somewhere private.””
That was the same thing she had said before.
And suddenly, I realized something.
Every time I asked a question she didn’t want to answer, she tried to move me away.
Away from the room.
Away from witnesses.
Away from people who could hear.
“Daniel,” I said quietly.
“Yeah?””
“Get the video onto my phone.””
Claire’s expression changed.
“Mark, don’t.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
Daniel sent the file.
My phone buzzed seconds later.
I opened it.
“Stop.””
The voice came from the priest.
Everyone turned.
He looked uncomfortable.
“Mr. Hayes, perhaps this ceremony should be paused until everyone has had time to calm down.””
I almost laughed.
Calm down.
That was impossible.
My seven-year-old daughter had just stopped my wedding.
My best friend had shown me a video of my bride entering my house with another woman who looked exactly like her.
And now someone had sent a message mentioning my dead wife.
Nothing about this was calm.
I nodded.
“You’re right.””
I turned toward the guests.
“I’m sorry.””
My voice felt heavy.
“This wedding is postponed.””
A wave of shocked whispers moved through the chapel.
Claire stared at me.
“Postponed?””
“Yes.””
“You’re serious?””
I looked at her.
“I need answers.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You’re ending this because of a picture?””
“No.””
I glanced at Lily.
“I’m stopping because my daughter is scared.””
Claire’s expression hardened.
For one second, the tears disappeared.
Then they came back.
But I noticed.
I noticed everything now.
Daniel touched my shoulder.
“Come on.””
I nodded.
I took Lily’s hand.
We walked away from the altar.
And Claire didn’t follow.
That scared me more than if she had.
Because the Claire I knew would have fought.
She would have begged.
She would have grabbed my hand and demanded I listen.
Instead, she just stood there.
Watching us leave.
Like she knew something I didn’t.
Twenty minutes later, I was sitting in my office at home.
The wedding suit still felt uncomfortable.
The tie was too tight.
The ring was still in my pocket.
I hadn’t taken it out since Lily grabbed my hand.
Lily sat on the couch beside me, holding the small blue ribbon she had been looking for.
I hadn’t even realized she had found it.
She kept rubbing the fabric between her fingers.
The same way Emily used to do when she was nervous.
That thought hurt.
“Daddy?””
I looked at her.
“Yeah?””
“Are you mad at me?””
The question broke something inside me.
“No.””
Her eyes lifted.
“Really?””
I moved closer.
“Lily, listen to me.””
She looked at me.
“You did the right thing.””
“But everybody was staring.””
“I know.””
“They looked angry.””
“I know.””
She lowered her head.
“I didn’t want to ruin your wedding.””
My chest tightened.
“You didn’t ruin anything.””
“But Claire…”
She stopped.
“What about Claire?””
Lily hesitated.
“She was nice before.””
The words surprised me.
“What do you mean?””
She looked toward the floor.
“She used to be nice.””
“Used to?””
Lily nodded slowly.
“After you told her we were getting married, she changed.””
I frowned.
“How?””
“She started asking me questions.””
“What kind of questions?””
She hugged the ribbon.
“About Mommy.””
The room went silent.
“What kind of questions about Mommy?””
Lily looked nervous.
“She asked where Mommy kept her things.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
“When did she ask?””
“Lots of times.””
I stood.
“Lily, why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because you loved her.””
The simplicity of that answer destroyed me.
I sat back down.
My daughter had been carrying this fear alone because she thought telling me would hurt me.
“How long?””
She looked confused.
“How long what?””
“How long have you been scared?””
She stared at the ribbon.
Then whispered:
“Since the first time I saw the scar.””
I froze.
“What?””
“The cut on Claire’s ear.””
She looked up.
“She didn’t always have it.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What do you mean?””
Lily swallowed.
“The first time Claire came to our house, she didn’t have that little cut.””
I stared at her.
“Lily.””
“I remember.””
“Are you sure?””
She nodded.
“Because I asked her about it.””
My mouth went dry.
“What did she say?””
“She said…”
Lily’s voice became smaller.
“She said some things about people change.””
A knock interrupted us.
Daniel walked in.
His laptop was open.
“I found something.””
I stood immediately.
“What?””
He placed the laptop on the table.
“I checked the security footage again.””
“You said you downloaded the clip.””
“I did.””
He looked serious.
“But I noticed something.””
He turned the screen.
“The video from yesterday wasn’t the first time this happened.””
I stared.
“What do you mean?””
“There are other recordings.””
My stomach tightened.
“Of Claire?””
He nodded.
“Over the past three months.””
I looked at the screen.
Multiple dates appeared.
Different days.
Different times.
Different videos.
“What was she doing?””
Daniel clicked one.
The footage showed Claire walking through my hallway.
Another showed her standing in the living room.
Another showed her opening a drawer.
My drawer.
The one where I kept Emily’s old belongings.
I felt sick.
“Why would she do that?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
Then he opened another file.
“This one is different.””
The video loaded.
The timestamp was two weeks after my engagement announcement.
Claire entered my house while I was away.
She walked directly to Emily’s old bedroom.
The room I had barely touched in seven years.
The room where I kept photographs, letters, and memories.
She stood there for almost ten minutes.
Then she opened a box.
My box.
The one marked with Emily’s name.
My hands curled into fists.
“Stop.””
Daniel paused.
I couldn’t breathe.
“What was she looking for?””
“I don’t know.””
I watched the frozen image of Claire holding Emily’s box.
Then something caught my eye.
“Zoom in.””
Daniel did.
The image became grainy.
But clear enough.
Claire wasn’t alone.
Someone was standing in the doorway.
A woman.
The same woman from the mirror.
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“Who is that?””
Daniel stared.
“I don’t know.””
I leaned closer.
The woman stepped into the light.
And then I saw her face.
It was Claire.
But older.
Different.
A scar on her cheek.
A tired expression.
A face that looked like it had spent years running from something.
Then the woman turned toward the camera.
And for one second, it felt like she was looking directly at me.
Daniel whispered:
“Mark…”
I didn’t answer.
Because the woman on the screen raised her hand.
And held up a piece of paper.
A piece of paper with a name written across it.
Emily Hayes.
My wife’s name.
Then the video cut to black.
At that exact moment, my phone buzzed.
A message appeared from the same unknown number.
This time, it included a photo.
I opened it.
And my entire body went cold.
It was a picture of Emily.
Taken one week before she died.
Standing beside a woman I had never seen before.
A woman who looked exactly like Claire.

And beneath the picture were six words:
*“Your wife knew the truth first.””*
