Chapter 8: The Visitor Vanessa Sent Back
Nobody spoke.
The voice outside the door was calm.
Almost polite.
That made it worse.
Danger usually announces itself with anger.
With shouting.
With threats.
But the most terrifying people are often the ones who speak softly.
I stood in the middle of the living room, staring at the front door.
Emily held Sophie's hand tightly.
Daniel was frozen beside the table.
The laptop screen still displayed the words:
*FILE 2 AVAILABLE.*
A message waiting to be opened.
A truth waiting to destroy us.
And now someone was standing outside.
Someone Vanessa had sent.
I whispered:
"How does he know I'm here?""
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
The person outside knocked again.
Three slow knocks.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Sophie squeezed Emily's hand.
"Mommy...""
Emily immediately knelt down.
"It's okay.""
But her voice wasn't convincing.
Sophie looked at me.
"Daddy, who is it?""
I forced myself to smile.
"I don't know, sweetheart.""
That was the first time I realized how much Vanessa had changed our lives.
Because before all this, I would have opened that door without thinking.
I would have trusted the world.
I would have believed the people around me wanted to help.
Now?
Now I looked at every person as a possible threat.
Another knock.
"Ryan.""
The voice came through the door.
"I know you're inside.""
Daniel whispered:
"Don't open it.""
I looked at him.
"Who is he?""
"I don't know.""
"Then how do you know we shouldn't open it?""
Daniel looked toward the door.
"Because Vanessa doesn't send people to help.""
The sentence sat heavily between us.
The person outside spoke again.
"I have something you need.""
I didn't answer.
"I have information about Michael.""
Daniel's face changed.
That got his attention.
The person continued.
"And I have proof of what really happened three years ago.""
Emily stepped closer to me.
"Ryan, don't.""
I looked at her.
"What if he's telling the truth?""
Her eyes filled with fear.
"What if he's not?""
Fair point.
I walked slowly toward the door.
Daniel grabbed my shoulder.
"Wait.""
I turned.
"What?""
"Look through the window.""
I moved carefully.
The curtain was slightly open.
I looked outside.
A black sedan was parked near the driveway.
No familiar face.
No Vanessa.
Just a man standing beneath the porch light.
Mid-forties.
Dark coat.
Holding an envelope.
He wasn't trying to hide.
He wanted me to see him.
I stepped back.
"Who is he?""
Daniel stared at the man.
Then suddenly his expression changed.
"No.""
"What?""
Daniel's face went pale.
"I know him.""
My heart tightened.
"Who?""
He whispered:
"That is Doctor Harris.""
The name hit the room like a bomb.
Emily covered her mouth.
"The doctor from the video?""
Daniel nodded.
I looked outside again.
The man who had delivered my daughter.
The man who knew about the records.
The man who Vanessa said was involved.
He was standing at my door.
Waiting.
I unlocked the door.
"Ryan!""
Emily grabbed my arm.
I looked at her.
"I need answers.""
I opened the door halfway.
Doctor Harris stood there.
His expression was exhausted.
Not threatening.
Not angry.
Just tired.
"Ryan.""
I stared at him.
"How do you know my name?""
He looked past me.
At Emily.
At Daniel.
Then at Sophie.
His face changed when he saw her.
A mixture of sadness and guilt.
"I was hoping she would be safe.""
I stepped forward.
"Don't talk about my daughter.""
He nodded.
"You're right.""
He held up the envelope.
"I came because Vanessa told me to.""
"Where is she?""
His eyes dropped.
"I don't know.""
I studied him.
"You expect me to believe that?""
"No.""
His answer surprised me.
"I expect you to believe what the evidence shows.""
He extended the envelope.
"She wanted you to have this.""
I didn't take it.
"Why didn't she bring it herself?""
Doctor Harris looked toward the road.
"Because she knew someone was watching her.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Who?""
Doctor Harris looked at him.
"Your brother was right.""
Daniel froze.
"What?""
"Michael wasn't killed because of the hospital records.""
Silence.
"He was killed because he found out who was behind them.""
I felt a chill.
"Who?""
Doctor Harris looked at all of us.
Then whispered:
"Someone inside your family.""
Nobody moved.
My eyes immediately went to Emily.
Then Daniel.
Then the empty space where Vanessa had stood.
Doctor Harris noticed.
"No.""
He shook his head.
"Not Emily.""
I looked at him.
"Then who?""
He hesitated.
That hesitation made my stomach drop.
"Before I tell you...""
He looked at Sophie.
"She needs to leave the room.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
His expression became serious.
"Because the truth about her birth is not the most dangerous thing.""
My heart stopped.
"What does that mean?""
Doctor Harris lowered his voice.
"It means someone tried to make sure Sophie would never exist.""
The words felt impossible.
I looked at my daughter.
My little girl.
My entire world.
"Who?""
Doctor Harris looked behind him.
Then back at me.
"Let me inside.""
I didn't move.
"Why?""
"Because I don't want the person following me to hear this.""
My blood went cold.
"Someone followed you?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
At that exact moment, headlights appeared at the end of the street.
Another car.
Slowly approaching.
Doctor Harris looked over his shoulder.
His face changed.
"They found me.""
Everything happened at once.
Daniel moved toward the door.
Emily pulled Sophie back.
I stepped outside.
"Who?""
Doctor Harris grabbed my arm.
"Ryan, listen to me.""
His voice became urgent.
"The person who has been controlling this entire situation is not Vanessa.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
He looked directly into my eyes.
"Vanessa was only a piece of the plan.""
The approaching car stopped.
The headlights illuminated the driveway.
Doctor Harris whispered:
"The person you should be afraid of is someone you've trusted for years.""
The driver's door opened.
A figure stepped out.
My heart stopped.
Because even in the darkness, I recognized the face.
Someone I had known for almost a decade.
Someone who had comforted me.
Someone who had helped raise Sophie.
Someone I thought was innocent.
Emily gasped behind me.
"No...""
The person walked toward the house.
And Doctor Harris whispered:
"That's the person who ordered Michael's death.""
The figure stepped into the light.
And my entire world collapsed.
Because standing there was not a stranger.
Not a criminal.
May you like
Not someone from Vanessa's past.
It was someone who had been sitting at my family table all along.
