Chapter 2: The Woman Behind The Closet Door
The door opened with a slow, painful creak.
For a second, I saw nothing.
Only darkness.
The closet was deeper than I remembered. The small yellow bulb hanging from the ceiling flickered weakly, throwing shadows across stacks of old boxes, forgotten clothes, and dusty shelves.
Then I saw the floor.
And I stopped breathing.
There was a woman sitting on the ground.
Her wrists were tied together with a piece of fabric. Her hair was messy, her face pale, and tears had dried along her cheeks.
But I knew that face.
Even after all the years.
Even after everything I had been told.
I knew her.
"Emily?""
The name left my mouth like a broken whisper.
The woman lifted her head.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Ryan...""
The world tilted.
Behind me, Sophie screamed.
"Mommy!""
She ran forward, but I caught her before she reached the closet.
Not because I wanted to stop her.
Because my body moved before my mind could understand what was happening.
The woman inside the closet was not Vanessa.
It was Emily.
My wife.
The woman I had buried three years ago.
The woman Vanessa told me had died.
The woman everyone told me I had to let go of.
I stared at her, unable to move.
"No.""
The word barely escaped my lips.
Emily shook her head, crying.
"Ryan, please.""
I stepped backward.
My hands felt numb.
"This isn't possible.""
Behind me, Vanessa said nothing.
That silence was louder than any confession.
I slowly turned around.
She was standing in the hallway.
Watching.
Not shocked.
Not confused.
Not scared.
Just watching.
And that was when the truth hit me harder than anything else.
She knew.
She had always known.
"Vanessa..."" My voice trembled.
"What did you do?""
Her face hardened.
"Ryan, you need to calm down.""
I laughed once.
A bitter, empty sound.
"Calm down?""
I pointed toward the closet.
"My dead wife is tied up inside a closet, and you want me to calm down?""
Sophie looked between us, tears filling her eyes.
"Daddy... why is Mommy tied up?""
That question broke something inside me.
Because I had no answer.
I had no explanation that could make sense to a six-year-old.
I knelt beside her.
"Sweetheart, go downstairs.""
"No.""
Her tiny fingers grabbed my shirt.
"I want Mommy.""
Emily looked at Sophie.
The moment their eyes met, both of them started crying.
"My baby...""
Emily's voice cracked.
Sophie covered her mouth.
"Mommy?""
Emily nodded.
"I’m here.""
Sophie ran into the closet.
This time, I didn't stop her.
I watched my daughter hug the woman I thought was gone forever.
And for the first time in three years, I saw something I had forgotten.
Emily's smile.
The real one.
The one Vanessa never had.
I stood there frozen, trying to rebuild my entire life in my head.
Every memory.
Every conversation.
Every lie.
Three years earlier, I had received a phone call telling me Emily had been killed in a car accident.
I remembered the hospital.
I remembered the doctor’s face.
I remembered Vanessa holding my hand while I collapsed.
She had been Emily's closest friend.
The person who stayed beside me when I couldn't sleep.
The person who helped me raise Sophie when I was drowning in grief.
I thought she saved me.
I thought she was the only person who understood my pain.
But she was standing in front of me now.
And my daughter’s mother was locked away like a prisoner.
"Why?"" I asked.
Vanessa looked away.
"Ryan...""
"No.""
My voice became louder.
"Don't say my name like you care.""
She flinched.
Good.
For the first time in years, I wanted her to feel something.
"You told me she died.""
Vanessa swallowed.
"She had to disappear.""
My eyes narrowed.
"What does that mean?""
Emily held Sophie tightly as she answered.
"It means she wanted me gone.""
Vanessa immediately snapped.
"Don’t listen to her.""
I turned toward Emily.
"How long?""
Emily closed her eyes.
"Three years.""
The hallway went silent.
Three years.
Three years of birthdays.
Three years of bedtime stories.
Three years of Sophie asking why Mommy never came home.
Three years of me grieving a woman who was still alive.
I looked at Vanessa.
My voice dropped.
"You kept her here for three years?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You don't understand.""
"No. I understand perfectly.""
"You don't know what happened between us.""
"Then explain.""
For a moment, Vanessa looked like she wanted to cry.
But the expression disappeared quickly.
"I was protecting this family.""
I stared at her.
"Protecting us?""
She stepped closer.
"Ryan, Emily was going to leave you.""
The words hit me strangely.
Not because I believed her.
Because I remembered.
A few months before Emily disappeared, she had seemed different.
Quiet.
Distracted.
She had started having long phone calls late at night.
She had told me she needed time to think.
But we never finished that conversation.
Because she vanished.
I looked at Emily.
"Is that true?""
Emily lowered her eyes.
The hesitation scared me more than anything.
"Ryan...""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
She looked at Sophie.
Then back at me.
"I was going to tell you something.""
Vanessa laughed quietly.
"There it is.""
I turned toward her.
"What?""
Vanessa pointed at Emily.
"Ask her why she was really leaving.""
Emily's face changed.
"Vanessa, stop.""
"No.""
Vanessa's voice became sharper.
"You've hidden behind your sadness for years. You made him believe you were some innocent victim.""
Emily stood slowly.
Her wrists still bound.
"I never wanted this.""
Vanessa smiled coldly.
"But you wanted him.""
I looked between them.
"What are you talking about?""
Neither woman answered.
And that scared me.
Because there was a story between them.
A story I didn't know.
A story everyone knew except me.
I stepped toward Vanessa.
"You have five seconds.""
She looked at me.
"For what?""
"To tell me the truth.""
Her expression changed.
"Ryan...""
"Five.""
She stared at me.
"Four.""
Emily whispered my name.
"Ryan, please. There are things you need to know.""
"Three.""
Vanessa looked toward Sophie.
Then toward Emily.
And suddenly, for the first time, I saw fear in her eyes.
Not guilt.
Fear.
"Two.""
She took a breath.
"One.""
Then she said something that made Emily go completely still.
"Ask your wife why Sophie wasn't supposed to be born.""
The hallway disappeared.
I couldn't hear anything except my own heartbeat.
Sophie looked up at me.
Confused.
"Mommy?""
Emily's face turned pale.
And I knew, before anyone explained it, that the secret behind the closet was only the beginning.
May you like
Because the woman I thought I knew was about to reveal the truth about the daughter I had spent six years loving.
And it was a truth that could destroy everything.
