Chapter 7: The Confession Nobody Was Ready To Hear
Vanessa's face remained frozen on the laptop screen.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Emily.
Not Daniel.
The video had only been playing for a few seconds, but it already felt like the entire foundation of my life was cracking beneath my feet.
Vanessa looked directly into the camera.
Not like the woman who lied to me.
Not like the woman who locked Emily away.
She looked like someone who had been carrying a secret so heavy that it had finally crushed her.
"If you are watching this, Ryan," she said again, "then you know about Michael.""
Emily's face changed.
The color disappeared from her skin.
"Turn it off.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
She stepped closer.
"Ryan, please.""
The fear in her voice stopped me for half a second.
Not because I trusted her.
Because I realized she was afraid of what Vanessa was about to reveal.
And that meant Vanessa wasn't the only person who had been hiding things.
I looked back at the screen.
"No.""
Emily swallowed.
"Ryan...""
"I spent three years believing you were gone.""
My voice shook.
"I spent three years mourning you.""
I pointed toward the laptop.
"I deserve the truth.""
Emily looked down.
Daniel remained silent.
The video continued.
Vanessa took a deep breath.
"I know you think I destroyed your family.""
A bitter smile crossed her face.
"Maybe I did.""
Emily whispered:
"She doesn't get to act like a victim.""
I looked at her.
"Let her speak.""
Emily went quiet.
Vanessa continued.
"But before you judge me, you need to understand what happened the night Sophie was born.""
The screen flickered.
The video changed.
Vanessa was no longer sitting alone.
There was another person in the room.
A man.
Older.
Wearing a hospital badge.
I leaned closer.
"Who is that?""
Daniel's expression changed.
"I don't know.""
Vanessa's voice continued over the image.
"This is Doctor Harris.""
Emily suddenly froze.
"Ryan...""
I looked at her.
"What?""
She stared at the screen.
"That's the doctor who handled my delivery.""
My chest tightened.
Vanessa continued.
"He was the person who knew the truth first.""
The doctor in the video looked nervous.
Vanessa's voice became quieter.
"Three years ago, I found out something was wrong with the hospital records.""
The screen showed documents.
Files.
Names.
Dates.
Then one name appeared.
Michael Carter.
Daniel stepped forward.
"That's my brother.""
The video continued.
"Michael wasn't just the donor.""
Vanessa looked directly into the camera.
"He was the biological father of Sophie's DNA.""
I looked at Sophie.
She was still sitting at the table, drawing.
Completely unaware.
I felt something break inside me.
Not because she wasn't mine.
Because she was.
And someone had spent years using that fact against her.
Vanessa continued.
"Emily knew about the donor process.""
Emily closed her eyes.
I looked at her.
"Did you?""
She nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
The honesty hurt.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
She looked devastated.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"Of losing you.""
I laughed quietly.
"Funny.""
She looked at me.
"Because you almost did anyway.""
The words hurt.
But they were true.
The video continued.
Vanessa's voice filled the room.
"Ryan, Emily never told you that she planned to leave after Sophie was born.""
I looked at Emily.
"Is that true?""
Emily didn't answer.
Daniel stepped in.
"She wasn't leaving because she didn't love you.""
I looked at him.
"Then why?""
The video answered.
"Because Emily believed Ryan deserved to know the truth.""
Vanessa looked away from the camera.
"She wanted to tell you that Sophie was conceived through a donor.""
I nodded slowly.
"Okay.""
I looked at Emily.
"Why didn't you?""
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
"Because Vanessa convinced me you wouldn't understand.""
I looked back at the screen.
Vanessa continued.
"Emily thought telling Ryan would destroy their marriage.""
A pause.
"But I knew the truth would destroy mine.""
The video went quiet.
Then Vanessa said something I never expected.
"I was jealous.""
Emily looked shocked.
"What?""
Vanessa continued.
"I spent years watching Emily have everything I wanted.""
The screen showed old photos.
Me.
Emily.
Sophie.
Family vacations.
Birthdays.
Christmas mornings.
Vanessa was always there.
Always smiling.
Always nearby.
"I told myself I was helping.""
Her voice cracked.
"But the truth was, I wanted her life.""
My stomach tightened.
Finally.
A confession.
But then Vanessa said something that changed everything.
"However...""
She looked directly into the camera.
"I didn't lock Emily away because I wanted Ryan.""
Nobody moved.
"What?""
I whispered.
Vanessa continued.
"I locked her away because of Michael.""
Daniel stepped back.
"What?""
Vanessa's face became serious.
"Michael was not just a donor.""
The room went silent.
"He was investigating the hospital.""
Emily looked confused.
"Investigating what?""
Vanessa looked down.
"The records.""
I frowned.
"What records?""
The video showed a document.
A legal file.
A name was highlighted.
Michael Carter.
Vanessa continued.
"Michael discovered that the donor program had been hiding something.""
Daniel moved closer.
"What?""
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"They weren't using anonymous donors.""
Nobody spoke.
"They were selecting specific donors.""
My heart pounded.
"What does that mean?""
The video continued.
"Michael found out that his DNA was used without proper consent.""
Daniel covered his mouth.
"No...""
Emily whispered:
"That can't be true.""
Vanessa looked at the camera.
"But Michael was going to expose them.""
The video showed another file.
A police report.
A date.
Three years ago.
The night Michael disappeared.
Daniel suddenly stepped backward.
"My brother didn't disappear.""
Everyone looked at him.
"What?""
His face turned pale.
"He was killed.""
Silence.
The video continued.
Vanessa's voice became barely audible.
"And that's when I realized I was trapped too.""
I stared at the screen.
"Why?""
"Because the people who covered up Michael's death knew I had evidence.""
My blood ran cold.
"Evidence?""
Vanessa nodded.
"I copied everything.""
The video stopped.
Then restarted with a new clip.
Vanessa sitting closer to the camera.
Her eyes full of fear.
"Ryan, if you are seeing this, it means they found me.""
I looked around the room.
"What?""
The lights flickered.
Again.
Emily grabbed my arm.
"Ryan.""
The video continued.
"Do not trust anyone who comes looking for the files.""
A pause.
"Especially the person who tells you they are trying to save you.""
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Then the laptop made a sound.
A new message appeared.
*FILE 2 AVAILABLE.*
Daniel stared at it.
"That's impossible.""
I looked at him.
"Why?""
He pointed at the screen.
"Because I only gave Vanessa one copy.""
My heart sank.
"One copy of what?""
He looked toward the dark window.
"The evidence.""
A sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Everyone froze.
Then another sound.
Footsteps.
Approaching the house.
Emily grabbed Sophie's hand.
"Ryan.""
I looked toward the front door.
The same door Vanessa had escaped through.
Someone knocked.
Three slow knocks.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Sophie gasped.
Her eyes widened.
"Daddy...""
I looked at her.
"What?""
She pointed toward the door.
"That's the same knock Mommy used.""
Nobody moved.
Because we all understood what that meant.
The person outside wasn't a stranger.
They knew this family.
They knew this house.
And they knew exactly how to make us open the door.
Then a voice came from outside.
A voice I had never heard before.
But one sentence made my blood freeze.
"Ryan, open the door.""
May you like
A pause.
"Your wife Vanessa sent me.""
