Chapter 3: The Secret Sophie Was Never Meant To Know

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Emily.

Not Vanessa.

Not even Sophie.

The only sound in the hallway was the faint buzzing of the closet light above us.

My daughter stood between the two women who had shaped her entire world, looking up at us with the confused expression only a child could have.

"Daddy?"" Sophie whispered.

I looked down at her.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

Her lower lip trembled.

"Why did Vanessa say I wasn't supposed to be born?""

That question cut deeper than anything Vanessa could have said to me.

Because children don't understand secrets.

They don't understand betrayal.

They only understand the fear in the voices of the people they love.

I knelt beside Sophie.

"Hey. Look at me.""

She slowly lifted her eyes.

"Nothing anyone says changes one thing.""

"What?""

I touched her cheek.

"You are my daughter. You are my little girl. Nothing changes that.""

She nodded, but I could see she was still scared.

Behind her, Emily closed her eyes.

Like she was carrying a memory she had been trying to bury for years.

I stood up.

"Emily.""

She looked at me.

"Tell me the truth.""

Her face tightened.

"Ryan...""

"No more secrets.""

My voice echoed through the hallway.

"Not after three years.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"She won't tell you.""

I turned toward her.

"Why?""

A small smile appeared on her face.

Because she knew something.

Something that made her believe she still had control.

"Because the truth makes her look worse than me.""

Emily looked at Vanessa with anger.

"You don't get to say that.""

"Why not?"" Vanessa replied.

"After everything you've done?""

I stepped between them.

"Enough.""

Both women stopped.

I looked at Emily.

"Start from the beginning.""

Emily swallowed.

She looked at Sophie.

Then at me.

"When I disappeared, it wasn't because I wanted to leave you.""

My chest tightened.

"Then why?""

She took a shaky breath.

"Because Vanessa threatened me.""

Vanessa immediately laughed.

"That's a lie.""

Emily ignored her.

"Three years ago, I found out Vanessa had been hiding something from me.""

"What?""

Emily looked at her.

"The pregnancy test.""

My heart stopped.

"What pregnancy test?""

Vanessa's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Emily continued.

"Before Sophie was born, I got sick. I thought something was wrong with the pregnancy, so I went to the doctor.""

I stared at her.

"I don't understand.""

"I wasn't pregnant.""

The words landed slowly.

Like I couldn't process them.

I looked at Sophie.

Then back at Emily.

"What are you saying?""

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"I'm saying the baby I carried... wasn't mine.""

Nobody spoke.

Even Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

I felt like the ground beneath me had disappeared.

"That doesn't make sense.""

Emily nodded.

"I know.""

"Then explain.""

She looked at Sophie.

"After Sophie was born, I found out there had been a mistake.""

My heart pounded.

"A mistake?""

Emily nodded.

"The hospital had mixed up records.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

And suddenly I understood.

This was why she was afraid.

This was why she didn't want the closet opened.

"What does that have to do with Vanessa?""

Emily's voice became quiet.

"Because Vanessa knew before I did.""

I turned toward Vanessa.

"Is that true?""

She didn't answer.

"Vanessa.""

Her jaw tightened.

"Yes.""

The honesty shocked me more than a lie would have.

"You knew?""

She looked at me.

"I found out before you.""

"How?""

She stayed silent.

Emily answered.

"Because Vanessa was the one who arranged the private testing.""

I felt a cold wave move through me.

"Why would she do that?""

Vanessa finally spoke.

"Because I was trying to protect you.""

I stared at her.

"From what?""

She stepped closer.

"From the truth.""

"What truth?""

Vanessa looked directly at Emily.

"That Sophie is not your biological daughter.""

The words were like a weapon.

I looked at Sophie.

She was holding onto Emily's hand, completely unaware that the adults around her were discussing a world she couldn't understand.

I lowered my voice.

"That doesn't change anything.""

Vanessa frowned.

"What?""

"You heard me.""

I pointed toward Sophie.

"She is my daughter.""

Emily began crying.

"I always wanted to tell you.""

I looked at her.

"Then why didn't you?""

Her silence answered before her words did.

"Because Vanessa made sure I couldn't.""

I looked back at Vanessa.

My anger returned.

"What did you do?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"You don't know the whole story.""

"Then tell me.""

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

"I told Emily that if she came back, I would expose everything.""

"Expose what?""

Vanessa looked at Sophie.

"Who her real parents are.""

Sophie squeezed Emily's hand.

"Mommy?""

Emily immediately bent down.

"It's okay.""

But it wasn't.

Nothing was okay.

Because now there were too many questions.

Who were Sophie's biological parents?

Why did Vanessa know?

Why did she lock Emily away instead of simply telling me?

And why did Emily accept disappearing for three years?

I looked at Emily.

"How did you survive?""

Her eyes dropped.

"Vanessa kept bringing food.""

My stomach turned.

"You visited her?""

Vanessa looked away.

"Of course.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

She didn't answer.

"Why keep her alive?""

For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely emotional.

"Because I needed her.""

The answer confused me.

"Needed her?""

Emily laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

"She needed me to stay quiet.""

Vanessa's face hardened.

"You don't know what you're talking about.""

"I know exactly what happened.""

Emily stepped forward.

"You didn't lock me away because you hated me.""

Vanessa stared at her.

"You locked me away because I knew the truth.""

I felt a chill.

"What truth?""

Emily looked at me.

The fear in her eyes returned.

"The truth about what happened the night Sophie was born.""

The room became silent again.

I remembered that night.

The hospital.

The rain against the windows.

The doctor telling me I was a father.

The first time I held Sophie.

The first time I cried from happiness.

A perfect memory.

Or so I thought.

"Ryan," Emily whispered.

I looked at her.

"That night wasn't an accident.""

My breathing stopped.

"What are you saying?""

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

"Don't listen to her.""

I turned.

"Why?""

Because Vanessa's face was no longer calm.

She was terrified.

"Because she is trying to destroy us.""

Emily shook her head.

"No.""

She looked directly at me.

"She is trying to stop me from telling you who was really in that hospital room the night Sophie was born.""

My hands curled into fists.

"Who?""

Emily opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, a loud sound came from downstairs.

A phone ringing.

Everyone froze.

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

Then at me.

And the fear in her eyes returned.

Because she knew exactly who was calling.

I walked slowly toward the sound.

The phone kept ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

I picked it up.

The screen showed an unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

For a few seconds, there was only silence.

Then a man's voice whispered:

"Ryan... if you want to know the truth about Sophie, you need to leave that house before Vanessa finds the evidence.""

My blood went cold.

"Who is this?""

The man breathed heavily.

Then he said six words that changed everything.

"I am Sophie's real father.""

The call ended.

And behind me, Vanessa whispered:

May you like

"No...""

Because whoever was on the phone had just opened the door to the biggest secret of all.
