Chapter 1: The Voice Behind The Door

"Mommy's voice was never supposed to come from a locked closet.""

I would remember those words for the rest of my life.

At the time, Sophie was only six years old. She was too young to understand why adults lied, too innocent to know that some smiles were fake and some promises were made only to hide the truth.

But children notice things.

They notice the silence after an argument. They notice when someone stops saying "I love you."" They notice when a room feels wrong, even if nobody else sees it.

That afternoon, Sophie noticed something everyone else missed.

She was standing in the upstairs hallway of our house, her tiny hands pressed against the cold wooden doors of the old hallway closet. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she leaned closer, pressing her ear against the dark wood.

"Mommy?"" she whispered.

Her voice cracked.

"Mommy, I hear you in here.""

The closet was supposed to be empty.

That was what Vanessa had told everyone.

Just an old storage space filled with winter coats, broken decorations, and boxes we never opened.

But Sophie knew what she heard.

A voice.

A desperate voice.

Her mother’s voice.

Vanessa appeared at the end of the hallway just seconds later.

Her footsteps were sharp against the hardwood floor.

"Sophie.""

The way she said her name made the little girl turn around immediately.

Vanessa was my wife.

The woman I had loved for almost ten years.

The woman I thought was the heart of our family.

But at that moment, something in her expression made me feel like I was looking at a stranger.

Her smile was gone.

Her eyes were cold.

"What are you doing?"" Vanessa asked.

Sophie wiped her tears with the sleeve of her pink sweater.

"Mommy is in there.""

Vanessa's face changed for half a second.

Only half a second.

But Sophie saw it.

And later, I would realize I saw it too.

"What did you say?"" Vanessa asked quietly.

Sophie pointed at the closet.

"Mommy's in there. She keeps knocking.""

Vanessa walked toward her quickly.

"No, sweetheart. You are imagining things.""

"I’m not," Sophie said, shaking her head.

"I heard her.""

Vanessa grabbed Sophie's arm.

Not gently.

Not like a mother trying to comfort her child.

Her fingers tightened around Sophie's wrist as she pulled her away from the door.

"Enough," Vanessa snapped.

Sophie’s eyes widened.

"Mommy, stop.""

That single word froze me.

Because Sophie wasn't saying it to Vanessa.

She was saying it to the person behind the door.

I came running down the hallway from my office after hearing the commotion.

"What’s wrong, sweetheart?""

My voice immediately softened when I saw Sophie crying.

She ran toward me.

"Daddy!""

I picked her up.

Her little body was trembling.

"What's wrong?"" I asked again.

She pointed behind me.

"The closet.""

I looked over.

Vanessa stood there, perfectly still.

"Sophie thinks Mommy is inside the closet," Vanessa said.

Her tone was calm.

Too calm.

I looked at her.

Then at the wooden doors.

Then back at Sophie.

"Why would Mommy be inside the closet?"" I asked.

Sophie hugged my neck tightly.

"Because I heard her.""

The hallway became silent.

A strange, heavy silence.

I looked at Vanessa.

"What’s in there?""

She didn’t hesitate.

"Nothing.""

The answer came too quickly.

No confusion.

No surprise.

Nothing.

Just a flat, cold lie.

I stared at her.

"Vanessa...""

She crossed her arms.

"I already told you. Sophie is scared because she watched too many scary videos. She’s making things up.""

Sophie shook her head violently.

"No!""

Her voice echoed through the hallway.

"Mommy is in there!""

Vanessa sighed.

A frustrated sigh.

The kind of sigh someone gives when they are tired of pretending.

"Sophie, stop embarrassing yourself.""

I felt something tighten in my chest.

Because those words didn’t sound like a mother comforting her child.

They sounded like someone trying to silence a witness.

I stepped closer to the closet.

"Open it.""

Vanessa's eyes immediately narrowed.

"Why?""

"Because Sophie is scared.""

"She’s wrong.""

"Then prove it.""

For the first time, Vanessa looked nervous.

Only for a moment.

But I saw it.

And before either of us could say another word, a sound came from behind the closet doors.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

My entire body went still.

Sophie gasped.

"That's Mommy's knock!""

The color drained from Vanessa’s face.

I slowly turned toward the closet.

The sound came again.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Three desperate knocks.

Not random.

Not an accident.

A pattern.

A pattern I recognized.

Because it was the same way my wife used to knock on our bedroom door when she wanted me to know it was her.

My hand moved toward the brass handle.

"Vanessa?""

She didn’t answer.

"Whose voice is that?""

Her lips parted.

But no words came out.

The hallway suddenly felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

I grabbed the handle.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Don’t.""

That one word stopped me.

Not because I was afraid.

Because of the fear in her voice.

I turned around slowly.

"Why shouldn’t I open a closet in my own house?""

Vanessa forced a laugh.

"Because this is ridiculous.""

But her hands were shaking.

Sophie noticed too.

"Daddy," she whispered.

I looked down at her.

Her face was pale.

"Please get Mommy out.""

My heart broke.

Because in that moment, I realized something terrifying.

Sophie wasn’t pretending.

She wasn’t confused.

She wasn’t imagining anything.

She believed her mother was trapped.

And children don’t usually fear imaginary things with tears streaming down their faces.

They fear what they know.

I turned back to the door.

The brass handle was cold beneath my fingers.

Then I heard it.

A sound so quiet I almost missed it.

A whisper.

"Please...""

My blood ran cold.

Because it wasn’t Sophie's imagination.

It wasn’t a television.

It wasn’t the house settling.

Someone was inside.

Someone was begging.

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face had lost all color.

"Who is in there?"" I asked.

She said nothing.

I twisted the handle.

The lock clicked.

And just before the door opened, Vanessa whispered something that made my entire world collapse.

"Ryan... you don't understand what you're about to find.""

The closet door slowly moved open.

May you like

And behind it was a truth Vanessa had spent years hiding from me.

A truth that would change our family forever.
