Chapter 4: The Man Who Claimed To Be Sophie's Father
"I am Sophie's real father.""
The sentence kept repeating in my head.
Not because I believed it.
Not because I wanted to.
But because the voice on the phone sounded afraid.
And people don't sound afraid when they are making up a lie.
They sound afraid when they know something they shouldn't know.
I slowly lowered the phone.
The entire hallway was watching me.
Emily.
Vanessa.
Sophie.
My daughter.
My family.
Or what I thought was my family.
"Who was that?"" Vanessa asked.
Her voice was different now.
The calm, controlled tone she always used was gone.
I looked at her.
"You tell me.""
Her face changed.
"What?""
"The person on the phone knew about Sophie.""
Emily stepped closer.
"What did they say?""
I stared at her.
"They said they were Sophie's real father.""
Sophie looked up.
"Daddy?""
I immediately turned toward her.
"No, sweetheart.""
I crouched down.
"Don't worry about anything.""
She looked confused.
"But someone said...""
"I know.""
I held her hands.
"Adults sometimes say things they shouldn't say.""
She nodded slowly.
But I could tell she didn't understand.
How could she?
She was six years old.
She shouldn't have to understand any of this.
She should have been worried about school projects and cartoons and what dessert she wanted after dinner.
Not whether the people around her had been lying about where she came from.
I stood up.
"Vanessa.""
She didn't answer.
"Who was that man?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn't believe she expected me to accept that answer.
"You don't know?""
"No.""
"Then why did you look terrified when I said what he told me?""
Her lips parted.
No answer.
Emily watched her carefully.
"Because she knows him.""
Vanessa turned sharply.
"Shut up.""
The words came out so quickly that everyone froze.
Especially Sophie.
She looked at Vanessa with fear.
And that was when I saw it.
The same fear I had seen in the closet.
The fear of a child who realizes an adult isn't safe.
I stepped between them.
"Don't speak to her like that.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"I was frustrated.""
"No.""
My voice hardened.
"You were scared.""
The silence that followed felt heavier than before.
I walked toward the kitchen.
"Everyone sits down.""
Vanessa frowned.
"What?""
"I said sit down.""
Maybe it was the first time I had spoken to her like that.
Because she actually listened.
We moved downstairs.
The kitchen looked exactly the same as it had every day.
The same wooden table.
The same family photos.
The same coffee machine Vanessa used every morning.
Everything looked normal.
That was the most terrifying part.
A house could look peaceful while hiding something horrible.
Sophie sat beside Emily.
I sat across from Vanessa.
For the first time in three years, the four of us sat together.
And it felt like strangers were sharing a table.
I placed the phone in front of me.
"Start talking.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Ryan...""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You had three years to tell me the truth.""
She looked down.
"You don't understand.""
"I understand that my wife was locked in a closet.""
Her eyes flashed.
"I never hurt her.""
Emily laughed bitterly.
"You locked me away.""
"I kept you alive.""
"That doesn't make it better.""
Vanessa ignored her.
She looked at me.
"I was trying to protect you.""
"From what?""
She hesitated.
"From losing everything.""
I stared at her.
"I already lost everything.""
Her expression softened.
For a second, I saw the woman I thought I knew.
The woman who sat beside me when I cried.
The woman who brought food to my house after Emily disappeared.
The woman who held Sophie when she missed her mother.
Then I remembered the closet.
And the woman behind the door.
"Tell me about the hospital.""
Vanessa looked away.
"No.""
"Why?""
"Because you won't understand.""
"Try me.""
Emily spoke quietly.
"She switched the records.""
Vanessa immediately looked at her.
"Stop.""
I turned.
"What records?""
Emily took a deep breath.
"When Sophie was born, there were two babies delivered that night.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
Emily nodded.
"There was a mistake.""
Vanessa stood.
"Ryan, don't listen to this.""
I slammed my hand on the table.
"Sit down.""
She froze.
Then slowly sat.
Emily continued.
"There was a fire alarm at the hospital that night. Nurses moved quickly. Files were mixed up.""
I felt dizzy.
"No.""
Emily looked at me.
"Ryan...""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You're telling me my entire life changed because someone mixed up paperwork?""
Emily looked at Vanessa.
"No.""
That single word made my chest tighten.
"No?""
Emily's voice became softer.
"The mistake happened first.""
She looked at Vanessa.
"But what happened afterward was intentional.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She didn't deny it.
That was worse.
"What did you do?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"I fixed it.""
My heart stopped.
"Fixed what?""
"The situation.""
"What situation?""
She looked at Sophie.
"The situation where you were raising another man's child.""
The room went silent.
Sophie looked at me.
"Daddy?""
I immediately reached for her.
"Come here.""
She climbed into my arms.
I held her tightly.
Because no matter what DNA said.
No matter what some stranger claimed.
She was my daughter.
She was the child I carried when she had nightmares.
The child who called me when she lost her first tooth.
The child who still left drawings on my desk.
Nothing could erase that.
But I needed the truth.
"Who is he?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Who?""
"The man who called.""
She didn't answer.
Emily did.
"His name is Daniel.""
Vanessa's face went pale.
"You don't know what you're saying.""
Emily looked at her.
"I know exactly what I'm saying.""
I turned toward Emily.
"Who is Daniel?""
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
"He was there the night Sophie was born.""
My fingers tightened around my daughter's hand.
"Why?""
Emily looked at me with tears in her eyes.
"Because Daniel was my brother.""
I blinked.
"What?""
Vanessa looked shocked.
"You never told him?""
Emily shook her head.
"I tried.""
I looked between them.
"You have a brother?""
Emily nodded.
"I did.""
The way she said "did" bothered me.
"What happened to him?""
Nobody answered.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
There was one sentence.
*Ryan, don't trust Vanessa. She didn't hide Emily because of jealousy. She hid her because Emily discovered what she did to Daniel.*
My blood ran cold.
I looked up.
Vanessa was staring at my phone.
And she knew.
She knew exactly what message I had received.
I slowly stood.
"What happened to Daniel?""
Vanessa whispered:
"Ryan...""
I stared at her.
"What happened to him?""
Her eyes filled with fear.
Then the front door upstairs slammed.
Everyone jumped.
Someone was inside the house.
A shadow moved across the hallway.
Sophie buried her face against me.
Emily grabbed my arm.
And Vanessa whispered the words that made my blood turn cold.
"He found us.""
I looked toward the stairs.
"Who?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
May you like
Because whoever was standing upstairs...
Was the person she had spent three years trying to keep hidden.
