Chapter 9: The Life Daniel Secretly Protected
I stared at the words until they stopped looking like words.
Project Misha.
Protect her at all costs.
My name.
My life.
Written on a document that existed before I ever knew Daniel.
I looked up slowly.
“No.””
Nobody spoke.
I laughed quietly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because my mind was refusing to accept what my eyes were seeing.
“This is impossible.””
Adrian stood across from me.
“I know how it looks.””
“You don’t know anything about how it looks.””
My fingers tightened around the paper.
“You knew my mother.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Daniel before I met him.””
“Yes.””
“You have documents with my name on them.””
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
“And you expect me not to think every person in this room has been lying to me?””
Nobody answered.
Because they knew I was right.
My entire life felt like a story someone else had written.
And I was only now finding the pages.
Marcus looked at me.
“Misha, please listen.””
I turned toward him.
“No.””
My voice broke.
“No more asking me to listen.””
I pointed at the documents.
“For years, everyone has decided what I should know.””
My eyes moved to Emma.
“You.””
Then Marcus.
“You.””
Then Adrian.
“And you.””
Adrian didn’t react.
That almost made me angrier.
“You all keep saying you were protecting me.””
I shook my head.
“But nobody protected me from the truth.””
The room was silent.
Finally, Adrian spoke.
“Your mother knew the truth about something dangerous.””
“What?””
“Something connected to your birth.””
My stomach tightened.
“My birth?””
He nodded.
“Twenty years ago, your mother discovered that a company was using illegal methods to hide financial crimes.””
“Your company?””
“My former company.””
The words surprised me.
Former.
Not current.
Adrian continued.
“Your mother was supposed to hand over evidence.””
“To who?””
“The authorities.””
“Then why didn’t she?””
His expression changed.
“Because she discovered you were connected to it.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at the document.
“Your mother found out that the people involved had access to your family records.””
I felt confused.
“My family records?””
“She believed someone was trying to erase your identity.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“That makes no sense.””
“It will.””
Adrian opened another folder.
Inside were copies of old documents.
Birth records.
Medical files.
Names.
Dates.
I looked at them.
And then I saw it.
A name I had never heard before.
A name connected to mine.
“What is this?””
Adrian took a breath.
“The truth your mother spent her life hiding.””
I looked at Emma.
She looked just as shocked as me.
“You didn’t know?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
I looked back at Adrian.
“Tell me.””
He nodded.
“Your mother wasn’t trying to expose me.””
I frowned.
“Then what was she doing?””
“She was trying to protect you from the people who created the entire situation.””
My heartbeat increased.
“Who?””
Adrian looked at Marcus.
Then at me.
“Daniel was close to finding out.””
I clenched my jaw.
“Stop talking about Daniel like he’s a hero.””
Adrian didn’t argue.
“He wasn’t.””
The answer surprised me.
“He made mistakes.””
I looked away.
“He hurt people.””
“Yes.””
“He lied.””
“Yes.””
“He cheated.””
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.””
His honesty caught me off guard.
“But Daniel also spent the last months of his life trying to undo the damage he caused.””
I thought about the letter.
The video.
The fear in his eyes.
The way he looked into the camera.
“I’m sorry.””
I hated that I still missed him.
I hated that part of me still wanted to defend him.
“What does this have to do with me?””
Adrian looked at the documents.
“Everything.””
An hour later, we were sitting around the dining table.
Nobody was hiding anymore.
At least, that was what I wanted to believe.
Adrian explained everything.
Years ago, my mother discovered evidence against people connected to Adrian’s company.
But before she could expose them, someone threatened her.
Not with money.
Not with her career.
With me.
A child.
A daughter.
She made a deal.
She disappeared from the investigation.
She changed the way people saw her.
She kept quiet.
And she raised me.
“She thought if nobody knew the truth, you would be safe,” Adrian said.
I looked down.
“But Daniel found out.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Adrian glanced at Marcus.
“Because Daniel started investigating the missing money.””
Marcus nodded.
“He thought it was a business problem.””
Adrian continued.
“Then he discovered the money trail led back years.””
“To my mother?””
“To the people who hurt her.””
I looked at the documents.
“And Daniel created Project Misha?””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
“Then who did?””
A silence.
Then Marcus spoke.
“Your mother.””
I froze.
“My mother?””
“She created the file.””
Marcus looked at me.
“She knew she might not survive long enough to tell you everything.””
My eyes filled.
“But why Daniel?””
Adrian answered.
“Because she trusted him.””
I laughed softly.
“My mother barely knew him.””
“She knew enough.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian leaned forward.
“Daniel wasn’t chosen because he was perfect.””
The words hurt.
“He was chosen because he loved you.””
I looked away.
The room became blurry.
“He loved you enough to keep digging even when it put him in danger.””
I whispered:
“He still betrayed me.””
Nobody argued.
And I appreciated that.
Because I didn’t need someone to erase what Daniel did.
I needed someone to admit it mattered.
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.””
A pause.
“He loved you and he hurt you.””
The honesty hurt more than excuses.
Because it was true.
People were complicated.
Love did not erase damage.
Regret did not undo betrayal.
But maybe a person could still do something good after doing something terrible.
Maybe.
Later that night, I watched Daniel’s final video again.
But this time, I noticed something I missed.
At the end.
Right before the screen went black.
Daniel looked to the side.
Not behind him.
Beside him.
Like someone was standing there.
I paused the video.
Zoomed in.
My breath stopped.
There was a reflection in the glass behind him.
A person.
A woman.
I called Marcus immediately.
“What happened?””
“I need you to look at something.””
I sent the image.
A few seconds passed.
Then:
“Misha…”
“What?””
“I know who that is.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
Silence.
Then Marcus answered.
“It’s impossible.””
“Tell me.””
His voice lowered.
“That’s Daniel’s mother.””
I froze.
Daniel’s mother had died ten years ago.
“She’s dead.””
“I know.””
“Then who is in that video?””
Nobody answered.
Then another message appeared on my phone.
Unknown number.
You finally found the truth.
I stared.
Another message followed.
But you found it too late.
Then the final message appeared.
A photograph.
Not from the past.
Not from a security camera.
A photograph taken today.
Of me.
Standing in my house.
The caption underneath said:
*You should have left Daniel’s secrets buried.*
I dropped the phone.
Because the person who sent it wasn’t watching from somewhere far away.
They were close.
Very close.
And in the reflection of the window behind me…
May you like
I saw a shadow.
Someone standing outside my house.
