Chapter 7: The Night Daniel Disappeared

The sentence didn’t make sense.

Not at first.

My brain heard the words, but it refused to understand them.

I was the last person who saw Daniel alive.

I stared at my sister.

The woman who shared my childhood.

The woman who knew every scar I had ever carried.

The woman who had just become another mystery.

“What did you say?””

Emma looked down.

“I should have told you.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Yes.””

My voice shook.

“You should have.””

“I was scared.””

“Everyone was scared.””

I stepped closer.

“But everyone still made choices.””

Emma’s tears fell silently.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t know what it feels like to find out your entire marriage was built on things you never knew.””

She looked like she wanted to reach for me.

I moved away.

Not because I hated her.

Because I didn’t know if I could survive another person breaking my trust.

“Start from the beginning.””

Emma nodded slowly.

She sat at the kitchen table.

For several seconds, she just stared at her hands.

Then she began.

“The night Daniel died, he called me.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What time?””

“About eight thirty.””

“That’s hours before the accident.””

She nodded.

“He sounded different.””

“How?””

“Like someone who had already accepted something bad was going to happen.””

I swallowed.

“What did he say?””

Emma looked at me.

“He asked if I was alone.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What did you say?””

“I said yes.””

“And then?””

“He asked me to meet him.””

“Where?””

“The old parking lot behind the warehouse district.””

I froze.

“The warehouse district?””

Emma nodded.

“That’s where I saw him.””

I looked at the silver key on the table.

“Why there?””

“I don’t know.””

“You never asked?””

“I did.””

“And?””

“He told me he had found proof.””

My heart started racing.

“Proof of what?””

Emma looked away.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at her.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then tell me what you do know.””

She wiped her tears.

“When I arrived, Daniel was already there.””

“What was he doing?””

“Waiting.””

“Was he alone?””

Emma hesitated.

“No.””

My chest tightened.

“Who was with him?””

She looked at me.

“Adrian.””

The name hit like a weight.

The man from the garage.

The man connected to Daniel’s missing money.

The man who seemed to know everything.

“What happened?””

Emma took a breath.

“They were arguing.””

“About what?””

“I couldn’t hear everything.””

“You were there.””

“I was in my car at first.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel told me not to come out until he called me.””

That sounded exactly like him.

Always trying to control the danger around him.

Always thinking he could handle everything alone.

“What happened next?””

Emma’s voice lowered.

“Adrian left.””

“Then?””

“Daniel came to my car.””

I stared.

“And?””

“He gave me the key.””

“To what?””

“He didn’t say.””

“Emma.””

“He only said one thing.””

I waited.

She looked at me.

“He said, ‘If I don’t come back, Misha has to know the truth.’”

The room became silent.

My eyes filled.

Because even after everything…

Even after the betrayal…

A part of Daniel was still trying to protect me.

“What happened after that?””

Emma looked down.

“He got another call.””

“From who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Did you see?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“What did he say?””

“He said, ‘I know what you did.’”

My breathing stopped.

“Who was he talking to?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then what?””

“He told me to leave.””

“Leave?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“He said if I stayed, I would be involved.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Too late.””

Emma closed her eyes.

“I argued with him.””

“About what?””

“About you.””

My throat tightened.

“What about me?””

“I asked him how he could do this to you.””

The words hurt.

Because she had asked the same question I wanted answered.

“What did he say?””

Emma looked at me.

“He cried.””

I froze.

“Daniel?””

She nodded.

“He said he ruined everything.””

A painful silence filled the room.

“What else?””

“He said he never stopped loving you.””

I looked away.

I didn’t want those words.

Because they were too easy.

Too late.

Love was supposed to be a choice.

Not an excuse after the damage was done.

“What happened next?””

Emma’s hands shook.

“I left.””

“You left him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was angry.””

Her voice broke.

“I thought he was just trying to make me feel sorry for him.””

She looked at me.

“I thought he was another person protecting his own lies.””

I understood.

Because I had thought the same.

“What happened after you left?””

Emma’s face changed.

“I called him.””

“When?””

“Twenty minutes later.””

“And?””

“No answer.””

“Then?””

“I called again.””

“And?””

“Nothing.””

I felt cold.

“You knew something was wrong.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Emma covered her face.

“Because the next morning, when I found out he died…”

Her voice cracked.

“I thought it was my fault.””

I stared at her.

“Emma.””

“I thought if I had stayed, maybe…”

“No.””

She looked at me.

“You don’t know that.””

“I do.””

Because I knew Daniel.

Or I thought I did.

But I knew one thing.

Emma didn’t cause his choices.

She didn’t create his secrets.

She didn’t betray me.

Daniel did.

The phone buzzed.

Both of us looked at it.

Another message.

This time, from the same unknown number.

You heard her story.

Now hear mine.

A video file appeared.

I hesitated.

Emma looked terrified.

“Misha, don’t.””

I stared at the screen.

“What if this is the truth?””

“What if it isn’t?””

I knew she was right.

But I also knew something else.

Every answer had only created more questions.

I pressed play.

The video showed a dark room.

At first, there was nothing.

Then Daniel walked into view.

My heart stopped.

Because this wasn’t the same video from before.

This was recorded the night he died.

He looked exhausted.

His shirt was wrinkled.

There was a small cut near his eyebrow.

He looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this…”

He paused.

“I’m probably gone.””

I covered my mouth.

Daniel continued.

“Misha, I need you to understand something.””

His eyes looked full of regret.

“The worst thing I ever did was lie to you.””

Tears blurred my vision.

“But the second worst thing was trusting the wrong person.””

He looked over his shoulder.

Like he was afraid someone might enter.

Then he whispered:

“I know who betrayed me.””

My heart raced.

Daniel leaned closer to the camera.

“And it’s not who you think.””

The video glitched.

Then his voice became distorted.

But one sentence came through clearly.

A sentence that made both me and Emma freeze.

“The person who destroyed my life…”

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“…is the person who raised you.””

The screen went black.

Emma stopped breathing.

I slowly turned toward her.

Because there was only one person Daniel could mean.

Someone who had been part of my life since birth.

Someone I had never questioned.

Someone who had always told me they loved me.

My mother.

But that was impossible.

May you like

My mother had been dead for five years.

And yet Daniel had just named her.
