Chapter 8: The Truth Buried With My Mother
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Not me.
Not Emma.
Not even the sound of the house seemed to exist anymore.
My mother.
Daniel’s final words kept replaying in my mind.
The person who destroyed my life is the person who raised you.
My mother.
But she had been gone for five years.
She couldn’t have been the person who betrayed Daniel.
She couldn’t have been the person he was afraid of.
She couldn’t have been the missing piece in a story I didn’t even know I was part of.
Could she?
I looked at Emma.
Her face had lost all color.
“You knew.””
She immediately looked at me.
“What?””
“You knew something about Mom.””
“No.””
The answer came too fast.
I stared at her.
Emma looked away.
And my heart sank.
“Emma.””
She closed her eyes.
“Misha…”
“No.””
My voice was barely above a whisper.
“Not you too.””
She started crying.
“I didn’t know the whole story.””
“But you knew something.””
A long silence.
Then she nodded.
“Yes.””
The word felt heavier than any confession she had made before.
I sat down slowly.
Because my legs suddenly didn’t feel strong enough to hold me.
“What did you know?””
Emma wiped her face.
“After Mom died, I found some documents.””
“What documents?””
“I didn’t understand them at first.””
“About what?””
She hesitated.
“About Daniel.””
I stared.
“What does Daniel have to do with Mom?””
Emma looked toward the hallway.
Then back at me.
“Everything.””
The room seemed to shrink.
“Explain.””
She took a deep breath.
“Five years ago, before Mom passed away, she was working with someone.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not good enough.””
“I’m serious. She kept everything hidden.””
I shook my head.
“My mother was a nurse.””
“I know.””
“She wasn’t involved in anything.””
Emma looked at me sadly.
“You always thought Mom was simple.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you only knew the version of her she wanted you to see.””
The words hurt.
Because they sounded familiar.
Everyone in my life had become someone with another version.
Daniel.
Tara.
Marcus.
Now my mother.
“Show me the documents.””
Emma looked nervous.
“Misha…”
“Show me.””
She stood silently.
Then walked upstairs.
I followed.
For the first time in years, I entered my mother’s old room.
We had kept it almost untouched after she died.
Her books were still on the shelves.
Her favorite chair was still by the window.
The room smelled faintly like lavender.
A smell I remembered from childhood.
Emma opened the closet.
Behind a row of old blankets, she pulled out a small wooden box.
My heart started beating faster.
Another box.
Another secret.
She placed it on the bed.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
“I was scared.””
I looked at her.
“Everyone was scared.””
She lowered her eyes.
Then opened the box.
Inside were papers.
Photographs.
And a small notebook.
I picked up the first photograph.
My hands froze.
It was my mother.
Standing beside Daniel.
Not recently.
Years ago.
Before I met him.
I looked at Emma.
“What is this?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
I picked up another photo.
My mother.
Daniel.
And another person.
A man.
I recognized him immediately.
Adrian Vale.
My stomach turned.
“No.””
Emma looked at me.
“What?””
“Adrian knew my mother?””
She didn’t answer.
Because she didn’t know.
I opened the notebook.
The handwriting wasn’t my mother’s.
It was Daniel’s.
The first page contained only one sentence.
I finally found the connection.
My fingers trembled.
The next page had dates.
Names.
Numbers.
And one name appeared again and again.
Adrian Vale.
I kept reading.
Years ago, Adrian’s company was involved in financial fraud. Someone tried to expose him. That person disappeared.
I stopped.
Disappeared.
Not died.
Disappeared.
I turned the page.
My mother knew the truth.
I looked at Emma.
“She knew.””
Emma nodded.
“She must have.””
I continued reading.
She protected the evidence because she believed the truth would destroy everyone connected to it.
My breathing became shallow.
Everyone connected.
Me.
Daniel.
Emma.
I flipped another page.
Then I saw something that made me stop.
A name.
A name I had never seen before.
A name written beside my mother’s handwriting.
A name followed by a note.
My biological father.
I stared.
The words didn’t make sense.
My biological father.
I read it again.
And again.
“No.””
Emma looked at me.
“What?””
I held up the page.
“Did you know about this?””
Her eyes widened.
“No.””
“You’re sure?””
“Yes.””
I looked back at the paper.
Because suddenly the story wasn’t just about Daniel.
It was about me.
My family.
My entire life.
A sound came from downstairs.
A door closing.
Both of us froze.
Emma whispered:
“Did you lock the front door?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
We stood completely still.
Someone was inside the house.
My heart pounded.
Emma grabbed my arm.
“We need to leave.””
But I couldn’t move.
Not again.
Not another secret.
Not another person walking into my life with information I didn’t have.
A voice echoed from downstairs.
“Misha.””
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
It wasn’t Adrian.
It wasn’t Marcus.
It wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone I had known for years.
Someone I had trusted.
Someone who should not have been there.
“Come downstairs.””
Emma looked terrified.
“Who is that?””
I whispered:
“I don’t know.””
But that was a lie.
I did know.
I just didn’t want to believe it.
We slowly walked downstairs.
And standing in the living room was Marcus.
But he wasn’t alone.
Beside him stood the man from the parking garage.
Adrian Vale.
My anger exploded.
“What are you doing here?””
Marcus looked at me.
“I came because I know what you found.””
I laughed.
“Of course you do.””
Adrian looked around the house.
“This place hasn’t changed.””
I stared at him.
“You knew my mother.””
He didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
My entire body went cold.
“How?””
Adrian looked at the old photographs on the shelf.
“Because your mother was the reason Daniel started digging.””
I stepped forward.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at me.
“Your mother spent years trying to expose me.””
Emma moved closer.
“Then why would Daniel trust you?””
Adrian looked at her.
“He didn’t.””
The answer shocked me.
“Then why were you together?””
“Because sometimes the only way to stop an enemy is to stand close enough to watch them.””
I stared.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
Adrian’s voice was calm.
“I expect you to believe the evidence.””
He reached into his coat.
He pulled out a folder.
And placed it on the table.
Inside was a document.
I picked it up.
The first page had a date.
Twenty years earlier.
The second page had my mother’s signature.
The third page had Daniel’s.
But Daniel had signed it years before I met him.
My hands started shaking.
Because at the bottom of the page was a sentence that changed everything.
A sentence that explained why Daniel had chosen me.
A sentence that made me realize my entire marriage might have been built on a truth I never knew.

The document said:
*“Project Misha: Protect her at all costs.””*
