Chapter 6: The Sister Who Knew Too Much
I spent the next ten minutes staring at the photograph.
Ten minutes where my entire childhood, my marriage, and my trust in the person closest to me fought against one single image.
Emma.
My sister.
The person who held my hand when our mother died.
The person who slept on my bedroom floor when I went through my first heartbreak.
The person who stood beside me at my wedding and cried harder than anyone when Daniel kissed me.
The person who told me, three days ago, “He loved you.””
Now I was looking at proof that she had been meeting him in secret.
My phone was still pressed against my ear.
Marcus hadn’t said anything.
Neither had I.
Finally, he whispered, “Misha…”
I swallowed.
“Don’t.””
“What?””
“Don’t tell me there’s an explanation.””
Marcus went quiet.
Because he knew.
I wasn’t ready for an explanation.
I was ready for the truth.
“I need to talk to her.””
“Misha, wait.””
“No.””
“You don’t know what that picture means.””
“I know what it looks like.””
“That’s different.””
I looked at the photo again.
Daniel’s face.
Emma’s face.
A secret meeting.
Six months before he died.
The same time Daniel started acting afraid.
“You’re right,” I said quietly.
Marcus relaxed slightly.
“You are?””
I looked toward the living room.
“No.””
I felt my heart harden.
“I don’t know what it means.””
I stood up.
“But I know I need to ask.””
Emma was in the kitchen when I arrived.
She was wearing the same sweater she wore yesterday.
The same one she wore when she sat beside me while I cried.
For one second, I almost forgot.
Almost.
Then I saw the photograph in my hand.
And everything came rushing back.
She looked up.
“Misha?””
I didn’t answer.
Her smile disappeared.
“What happened?””
I placed the photo on the table.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like I was afraid the wrong movement would destroy what little was left.
Emma looked down.
And the color drained from her face.
That was all I needed to see.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know this picture,” I whispered.
Emma didn’t move.
“Misha…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“Don’t start with my name.””
She looked at me.
“I can explain.””
Those four words hurt more than the picture.
Because people only said them when there was something to explain.
I laughed softly.
“Of course you can.””
“Misha, please.””
“How long?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“How long what?””
“How long did you know?””
She looked away.
And that was when I felt something inside me collapse.
Because my sister was not denying it.
“You knew about Daniel and Tara.””
Silence.
“You knew.””
Emma closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The word barely came out.
But it destroyed me.
I stepped back.
“How?””
She sat down slowly.
“I found out by accident.””
“Everyone finds out by accident.””
I shook my head.
“What is wrong with all of you?””
Emma looked up.
“Misha…”
“No.””
My voice grew louder.
“My husband cheated on me for two years. His brother knew. A stranger knew. A woman carrying his baby knew.””
I pointed at the photo.
“And now you?””
Tears rolled down Emma’s face.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
I almost smiled.
That sentence again.
“I don’t care what you wanted.””
My voice lowered.
“I want to know why.””
Emma looked at the photo.
“Daniel came to me.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He came to me six months ago.””
“Why?””
She hesitated.
“He was scared.””
I felt a familiar anger rising.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Emma looked at me.
“Because Daniel begged us not to.””
I stared.
“Us?””
The room became silent.
I slowly understood.
“Who else?””
Emma didn’t answer.
“Who else knew?””
Her hands trembled.
“Marcus.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Another secret.
Another person.
Another piece of my life that existed without me.
“What did Daniel tell you?””
Emma looked broken.
“He said he made mistakes.””
I laughed.
“A lot of them.””
“He said he was trying to fix things.””
“With Tara?””
“No.””
That answer surprised me.
Emma looked at me.
“He wasn’t talking about Tara.””
I frowned.
“Then what?””
She swallowed.
“About something bigger.””
I remembered the missing money.
The strange man.
The video.
The warning.
“What was he involved in?””
“I don’t know.””
I stared at her.
“You knew he was in trouble.””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I slammed my hand against the table.
“No.””
Emma flinched.
“You were protecting him.””
She started crying.
“I was protecting my sister.””
“Then why did you lie?””
She had no answer.
Because there wasn’t a good one.
There never was.
Emma eventually told me everything she knew.
Not everything Daniel knew.
Just what she knew.
Six months earlier, Daniel had shown up at her apartment late at night.
He was shaking.
He looked like someone who hadn’t slept in days.
“He kept asking me if you were safe,” Emma said.
I looked at her.
“Safe from what?””
“I don’t know.””
“You never asked?””
“I did.””
“And?””
“He told me if I knew less, I would be safer.””
I looked away.
The same excuse.
Everyone protecting me by keeping me in the dark.
But darkness wasn’t safety.
It was loneliness.
“What happened next?””
Emma wiped her eyes.
“He gave me something.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What?””
“A key.””
I stared.
“A key to what?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“He told me never to use it unless he called me.””
“When was he supposed to call?””
Emma’s voice broke.
“He never did.””
The room went quiet.
“Where is it?””
She looked toward the hallway.
Then stood.
A few seconds later, she returned with a small envelope.
Inside was a silver key.
No label.
No explanation.
Just a key.
I picked it up.
It felt cold.
“What does it open?””
“I don’t know.””
I looked at my sister.
For the first time, I saw how scared she was.
Not guilty.
Scared.
And somehow that made everything more complicated.
Because I wanted someone to hate.
Someone simple.
Someone I could blame.
But everyone around Daniel seemed trapped in his secrets.
Including me.
My phone buzzed.
Both of us froze.
Unknown number.
I opened the message.
I thought you would blame her.
My blood ran cold.
Emma looked at me.
“Who is it?””
I didn’t answer.
Another message appeared.
You’re finally asking the right questions.
Then a photo loaded.
A security camera image.
My breath stopped.
It showed Daniel entering a building.
Beside him was Emma.
But this time, there was someone else.
Someone standing behind them.
Someone watching.
I zoomed in.
My hands started shaking.
Because I recognized him.
The man from the parking garage.
Adrian Vale.
Another message appeared.
Daniel didn’t die because of Tara.
He didn’t die because of money.
He died because he found out who was controlling everything.
Then one final message appeared.
And this one made my blood run cold.
Ask your sister what happened the night Daniel disappeared.
I slowly looked up at Emma.
She was staring at my phone.
Her face had gone completely pale.
“Emma.””
She didn’t answer.
“Tell me.””
Her lips trembled.
“Misha…”
“What happened that night?””
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
May you like
And whispered:
“I was the last person who saw Daniel alive.””
