Amused

Chapter 4: The Box Daniel Hid From Me

The sound of footsteps coming closer was the only thing I could hear.

Not the rain outside.

Not the distant noise of cars passing through the city.

Not even my own breathing.

Just footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Certain.

Someone was walking toward us like they already knew exactly where we were standing.

Marcus grabbed my arm.

“We need to go.””

I looked at the black box in Mrs. Carter’s hands.

“No.””

“Misha.””

“That box has answers.””

“And whoever is coming might not want you to have them.””

Mrs. Carter’s fingers tightened around the box.

Her face had changed.

The kind elderly woman who brought us cookies every Christmas was gone.

The woman standing in front of me looked terrified.

“Please,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“Mrs. Carter, what is happening?””

Her eyes moved toward the darkness behind us.

Then back to me.

“Daniel was afraid.””

The words hit me harder than they should have.

Because everyone kept saying the same thing.

Daniel was afraid.

Daniel was worried.

Daniel was hiding something.

But nobody would tell me what.

“Afraid of who?”” I asked.

She opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, a voice echoed through the garage.

“Evelyn.””

Mrs. Carter froze.

My body went cold.

The voice wasn’t loud.

It didn’t need to be.

It carried the confidence of someone who believed they were in control.

Marcus stepped in front of me.

“Who is that?””

Mrs. Carter whispered:

“You shouldn’t have come here.””

The figure appeared between two parked cars.

A man.

Tall.

Dark jacket.

His face was partially hidden by the shadows.

But Mrs. Carter knew him.

And that scared me more than anything.

The man stopped several feet away.

“Give me the box.””

Mrs. Carter shook her head.

“No.””

His expression hardened.

“Evelyn.””

“You don’t get to threaten me anymore.””

I looked at Marcus.

He noticed it too.

This wasn’t a random meeting.

This was something that had been happening long before tonight.

The man looked at me.

And when he spoke again, my stomach dropped.

“So you’re Misha.””

I felt a chill.

“You know who I am?””

He gave a small smile.

“Everyone knows who you are.””

I hated that sentence.

Because I had heard it before.

From Tara.

From people who knew about Daniel’s secrets.

Everyone knew.

Except me.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

The man ignored the question.

Instead, he looked at the box.

“Daniel made things complicated.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You knew my brother?””

The man looked at him.

“Yes.””

“How?””

The man smiled slightly.

“Your brother had a habit of trusting the wrong people.””

My jaw tightened.

“You mean like him trusting you?””

His eyes moved back to me.

For a moment, something unreadable crossed his face.

Then he said:

“Daniel trusted everyone except himself.””

I didn’t understand.

But somehow, I knew this man was connected to everything.

The affair.

The fear.

The accident.

The secrets.

“Did you kill him?”” I asked.

The question hung in the air.

Marcus looked at me.

“Misha…”

But I needed to know.

The man stared at me for a long moment.

Then he said:

“No.””

I almost believed him.

Almost.

Because he didn’t answer like someone offended.

He answered like someone who was tired.

But that didn’t make him innocent.

“Then why are you here?””

He looked at Mrs. Carter.

“Because Daniel left something that doesn’t belong to her.””

I felt anger rise inside me.

“She was his wife.””

The man looked at me.

“I know.””

“Then don’t talk about what belongs to me like I’m some stranger.””

His expression softened slightly.

And that made me even more uncomfortable.

Because I didn’t want his sympathy.

I wanted the truth.

Mrs. Carter suddenly stepped forward.

“You need to leave.””

The man looked at her.

“You’re making this worse.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“But Daniel was right.””

The man’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“What did he tell you?”” he asked.

Mrs. Carter held the box tighter.

“He told me if anything happened to him, I should give this to Misha.””

My heart stopped.

The man looked at me.

“He chose you?””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

The man took a step back.

Then another.

And I thought he was leaving.

Until he said:

“Ask yourself one question, Misha.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“Why would Daniel hide the truth from you if he loved you?””

The words hurt because I had asked myself the same thing.

Every night since the funeral.

Every time I looked at his picture.

Every time I remembered his promises.

The man disappeared into the darkness.

A few seconds later, we heard a car engine start.

Then silence.

Marcus immediately turned to me.

“We’re leaving.””

This time, I didn’t argue.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I finally understood something.

Daniel’s secrets were bigger than I thought.

And people were willing to fight over them.

We returned to my house after midnight.

Nobody spoke during the drive.

The black box sat on my lap.

It felt heavier than it should have.

Like it contained something alive.

Something waiting.

When we reached home, Marcus checked the street before we got out.

I noticed.

“You think someone followed us?””

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the only honest one I have.””

I looked at him.

For the first time, I believed him.

Marcus had lied by omission.

But he wasn’t the person who destroyed my life.

Daniel was.

And I still didn’t know why.

Inside the house, Emma was waiting.

The second she saw our faces, she stood.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

Her eyes moved to the box.

“What is that?””

I placed it on the table.

“Something Daniel left behind.””

Emma stared.

“Are you sure you want to open it?””

No.

I wasn’t.

But I opened it anyway.

Inside were three things.

A flash drive.

A photograph.

And a handwritten note.

I picked up the photograph first.

My hands immediately went numb.

It was Daniel.

But not alone.

He was standing outside a building I didn’t recognize.

Beside him was the same man from the parking garage.

I flipped the picture over.

There was writing on the back.

June 14.

The day everything changed.

I looked at Marcus.

“What happened on June 14?””

He looked confused.

“I don’t know.””

I grabbed the note next.

It was written in Daniel’s handwriting.

Misha,

If you found this, then I failed.

I swallowed.

The room became silent.

I continued reading.

The man you met tonight will tell you I was protecting you.

He’s right.

But he won’t tell you why.

My heart started racing.

Why?

The next line made me stop breathing.

Because the truth is not about what I did.

It’s about what I discovered.

I looked at Emma.

She was watching my face.

“What?””

I couldn’t speak.

I kept reading.

There is someone close to us who has been lying for a long time.

Someone who knows exactly how to make everyone believe them.

Someone who will do anything to keep you from finding out.

The note ended there.

No name.

No explanation.

Just a final sentence.

Don’t trust the person who tells you they loved me most.

I slowly lowered the paper.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the sentence had changed everything.

Daniel wasn’t warning me about a stranger.

He wasn’t warning me about the man from the garage.

He was warning me about someone close.

Someone who loved him.

Someone who had been standing beside me while I mourned.

Marcus looked at the note.

“What does it mean?””

I didn’t answer.

Because my mind was already going through every person in my life.

Everyone who had comforted me.

Everyone who had hugged me.

Everyone who had told me Daniel was a good man.

Then my eyes landed on the flash drive.

I picked it up.

“What’s this?””

Marcus looked nervous.

“I don’t know.””

I connected it to my laptop.

A single folder appeared.

No password.

No protection.

Just one file.

A video.

The date on the file was three days before Daniel died.

My hands hovered over the mouse.

I didn’t want to press play.

Because some part of me already knew.

Whatever was inside would change the way I saw everything.

But I clicked.

The screen went black.

Then Daniel appeared.

Sitting alone.

Looking directly into the camera.

He looked tired.

Scared.

And nothing like the husband I remembered.

His voice shook.

“If you’re watching this, Misha…”

He stopped.

His eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.””

I covered my mouth.

Daniel looked behind him, like he was afraid someone might be listening.

Then he whispered the words that made my entire body freeze.

“The person who betrayed you is not Tara.””

A pause.

A breath.

May you like

Then Daniel said:

“It’s the person standing closest to you right now.””
