Chapter 9: The Truth Hidden In The Last Video
The words stayed in the air.
*He was protecting you from me.*
I stared at Nathan.
For a moment, I couldn’t understand what I was hearing.
Not because the sentence was complicated.
Because my mind refused to accept it.
Nathan.
The man who held my hand when my father died.
The man who sat beside me at the funeral.
The man who promised me we would get through the pain together.
The man who had just spent hours admitting his lies.
Was telling me my father had been afraid of him.
"Explain.""
My voice didn’t sound like mine.
Nathan looked at the ground.
"I need you to watch the video.""
"No.""
His eyes lifted.
"I need answers now.""
He nodded.
"You deserve that.""
The woman standing beside the SUV looked nervous.
"Emily, there isn't much time.""
I looked at her.
"Who are you?""
"My name is Rachel.""
"I know your name.""
She looked surprised.
"You were my father's assistant.""
She nodded.
"I was.""
"Then tell me the truth.""
Rachel glanced toward the road.
Then toward the house.
"He recorded everything because he knew nobody would believe him without proof.""
"Proof of what?""
She looked at Nathan.
Then back at me.
"That he was wrong about someone.""
My heart sank.
"Someone?""
Rachel didn't answer.
She handed me the flash drive again.
"Watch it.""
We went back inside.
Nathan locked the doors.
That simple action bothered me.
Because for years, this house had been where I felt safest.
Tonight, it felt like a place full of hidden doors.
Hidden conversations.
Hidden enemies.
I sat at the kitchen table.
Lucas was asleep upstairs.
I hated that he was close enough to all of this.
Nathan connected the flash drive to the laptop.
The screen flickered.
A single video file appeared.
The date was four years earlier.
Three days before my father disappeared.
I stared.
My father had recorded this.
My hands shook as I clicked play.
The screen showed my father sitting in his office.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
For a second, I forgot everything.
I forgot Nathan.
The documents.
Vanessa.
The betrayal.
I only saw my father.
"Emily," he said.
My breath caught.
He was speaking directly to the camera.
"If you are watching this, something happened that I hoped would never happen.""
I covered my mouth.
His voice.
His face.
It was almost too much.
"I want you to know one thing first.""
He paused.
"I loved you.""
Tears filled my eyes.
"I know you will be confused. I know you will feel betrayed. But every decision I made came from one place.""
He looked straight into the camera.
"Protecting you.""
The video continued.
"I discovered financial irregularities connected to my foundation.""
I glanced at Nathan.
He was watching the screen silently.
"I initially believed Michael was responsible.""
Rachel looked down.
"But I was wrong.""
The room went still.
My father's next words changed everything.
"Michael was not the person controlling the situation.""
I frowned.
"Then who?""
My father looked away from the camera.
Like even saying the name was difficult.
"The person I trusted most.""
The video paused for a moment.
Then continued.
"Nathan.""
I stopped breathing.
Nathan closed his eyes.
I looked at him.
My father’s voice continued.
"When I discovered Nathan's connection to Vanessa, I believed he was making selfish choices.""
My chest tightened.
"But later, I realized he was being manipulated.""
I looked at Nathan.
Manipulated.
The same word he had used.
But my father wasn't excusing him.
He continued:
"That does not remove his responsibility.""
Nathan looked down.
"He made choices. Choices that hurt my daughter.""
The words were painful because they were true.
"But I discovered something else.""
My father leaned closer to the camera.
"Nathan did not know the entire plan.""
I felt confused.
"What plan?""
The video continued.
"Someone wanted Emily removed from control of the property.""
The house.
Again.
"Someone wanted access to her inheritance.""
My father's expression became serious.
"And they were willing to use anyone necessary.""
I looked at Nathan.
Including him.
"Emily, if Nathan is watching this with you, I need him to hear this.""
Nathan looked up.
My father’s voice became harder.
"You failed my daughter.""
Nathan’s eyes filled.
"But you still have a chance to correct what you did.""
The room was silent.
"Do not confuse regret with change. Do not apologize with words. Protect her with actions.""
I looked away.
Because somehow, my father had understood Nathan better than I ever had.
The video continued.
"There is one more thing.""
My father took a deep breath.
"The person behind this plan knows about Lucas.""
My blood ran cold.
I grabbed the edge of the table.
"Why?""
My father's voice became quieter.
"Because Lucas is the legal heir connected to the foundation.""
I frowned.
That made no sense.
Lucas was six.
"Your son has something nobody else can access.""
The video showed my father placing a document on his desk.
"An inheritance trust.""
Nathan whispered:
"I didn't know.""
I looked at him.
"You didn't?""
He shook his head.
"No.""
The video continued.
"Emily, when you turned thirty, the trust would transfer fully into your control. But if anything happened to you, Lucas would become the beneficiary.""
I felt sick.
Everything suddenly connected.
The house.
The documents.
The trip.
Vanessa moving in.
They weren't trying to replace me.
They were trying to remove me.
Because Lucas came after me.
My father looked directly into the camera.
"The person behind this will try to make it appear like Emily left voluntarily.""
I looked at the fake documents.
"Do not believe it.""
A pause.
"Your daughter has spent her life believing love means sacrifice.""
My eyes filled.
"Do not let anyone convince her that being kind means being weak.""
Then my father said the words that broke me.
"Emily, if you are watching this, I am sorry.""
I cried silently.
"I'm sorry I couldn't tell you myself.""
The screen flickered.
Then another video appeared.
A second file.
Different date.
After the first.
Nathan looked confused.
"I never saw this one.""
I clicked it.
The screen showed my father again.
But this time, he looked frightened.
"Emily.""
His voice was urgent.
"I need you to listen carefully.""
I leaned closer.
"I found out who is behind everything.""
The room became completely still.
My father continued:
"It wasn't Michael.""
A pause.
"It wasn't Vanessa.""
My heartbeat increased.
"Then who?""
My father looked toward the office door in the video.
Like he was afraid someone might enter.
"It was someone inside my family.""
I looked at Rachel.
She looked pale.
My father continued.
"Someone who had access to my accounts.""
Someone who knew the house.
Someone who knew my life.
Someone who knew my father's plans.
Then he said:
"The person helping them is someone Emily trusts.""
My heart sank.
Nathan looked at me.
Rachel looked away.
The video continued.
"I discovered the evidence.""
My father reached toward something off camera.
"But before I could expose them, they found out.""
The screen shook slightly.
My father looked toward the door.
Then whispered:
"If anything happens to me, the evidence is hidden where Emily will never think to look.""
I stared.
Where?
The video ended.
The room stayed silent.
Then Rachel spoke.
"Your father never trusted technology.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
"He hid important things in places connected to memories.""
I thought about the cabinet.
The letters.
The house.
Then I remembered something.
Something my father had said years ago.
A sentence I thought was just a joke.
*Every family has a place where they keep things they can't explain yet.*
My eyes widened.
"The house.""
Rachel nodded.
"Yes.""
Nathan stood.
"What?""
I looked at him.
"The house has another secret.""
Suddenly, a loud sound came from upstairs.
A crash.
My heart stopped.
"Lucas.""
I ran.
Nathan followed.
We reached his bedroom.
The window was open.
Cold air rushed inside.
The curtains moved.
My son was sitting on the bed, crying.
"Mom.""
I grabbed him.
"Are you okay?""
He nodded.
Then pointed.
"Someone was here.""
My blood froze.
"Who?""
Lucas looked at the window.
"He left this.""
On the floor was a small envelope.
My name was written on it.
But this time, the handwriting was not my father's.
Not Vanessa's.
Not Rachel's.
It was Nathan's.
I looked at my husband.
He turned pale.
"Emily...""
I picked up the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
A photograph of Nathan standing beside my father.
On the night he disappeared.
And on the back was a message.
*Now you know why he never trusted me.*
I looked at Nathan.
"Did you write this?""
He shook his head.
"No.""
"Then who did?""
Nathan stared at the photograph.
And whispered:
"Someone who wants you to believe I killed your father.""
Before I could answer, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
"Who is it?""
He didn't speak.
He turned the phone toward me.
The caller ID showed one name.
A name that made Rachel step backward.
A name that should have been impossible.
*Michael.*
May you like
And when Nathan answered, the voice on the other end said:
"Brother, it's time you finally told Emily what happened after I left you alone with her father.""
