Chapter 4: The Signature That Was Never Mine
"Your father.""
The words hung in the air.
For a moment, I thought I had heard him wrong.
The room was too quiet.
The kind of quiet where even the refrigerator humming in the kitchen sounded impossibly loud.
I looked down at the document again.
The signature stared back at me.
My name.
My handwriting.
Or at least, something pretending to be.
"No.""
Nathan didn’t move.
I lifted my eyes.
"No.""
My voice was stronger this time.
"My father would never do that.""
Nathan looked away.
And somehow, that hurt more than anything.
Because if he truly believed it was impossible, he would have argued.
He would have defended him.
Instead, he looked like someone carrying a secret he had been afraid to say out loud.
"Tell me exactly what happened.""
Nathan sat down slowly.
"I didn't know at first.""
I stood there holding the papers.
"Then when did you know?""
He swallowed.
"Three months ago.""
Three months.
I almost laughed.
Three months ago was when Nathan started acting differently.
The late nights.
The sudden business meetings.
The way he stopped leaving his phone on the counter.
The way he would smile at messages but turn the screen away whenever I walked into the room.
I had asked him.
So many times.
And every time, he told me I was imagining things.
"Three months ago," I repeated.
Nathan nodded.
"Your father contacted me.""
I felt my fingers tighten around the document.
"My father has been dead for four years.""
"I know.""
"Then who contacted you?""
Nathan didn't answer immediately.
That hesitation made my skin crawl.
"Nathan.""
He looked at me.
"It was someone who had access to his old accounts.""
I stared.
"Who?""
His eyes moved toward the document.
Then back to me.
"Your father's business partner.""
I frowned.
"My father didn't have a business partner.""
Nathan gave a tired smile.
"That’s what you thought.""
The anger came back instantly.
Not because of the information.
Because every new sentence revealed another hidden room in a house I thought I knew.
"My father had secrets too?""
Nathan looked down.
"Everyone had secrets.""
I stepped closer.
"Don't do that.""
"Do what?""
"Don't make this sound normal.""
He went silent.
"Secrets are not the same as lies.""
Nathan looked like he wanted to say something.
But he stopped.
Because he knew.
He had crossed that line.
I placed the documents on the table.
"Start from the beginning.""
Nathan took a deep breath.
"After your father died, there were unfinished financial matters.""
"My father left everything to me.""
"Mostly.""
I froze.
"Mostly?""
He nodded.
"There was another agreement.""
I stared at him.
"Why didn't I know about it?""
"Because your father didn't want you to know.""
My stomach tightened.
"My father didn't want me to know about my own property?""
Nathan looked uncomfortable.
"Emily, your father was trying to protect you.""
I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"Protect me by hiding things from me?""
"He believed you were too trusting.""
The words landed like an insult.
"My father thought I was stupid?""
"No.""
Nathan shook his head.
"He thought you loved people so much that you ignored when they hurt you.""
I stopped.
Because those words sounded like something my father would say.
Not because they were kind.
Because they were true.
My father had always worried about that.
When I married Nathan, he had pulled him aside.
I remembered it now.
The two of them standing in the backyard.
My father’s serious expression.
Nathan looking uncomfortable.
I had asked what they talked about.
My father only smiled and said:
"Just making sure he knows how lucky he is.""
At the time, I thought it was sweet.
Now I wondered what else had been said.
"What does this have to do with Vanessa?""
Nathan looked at the floor.
"Your father knew about her.""
My breath caught.
"No.""
"Emily—"
"No.""
I shook my head.
"My father died before Vanessa was even important in your life.""
Nathan’s silence was terrifying.
"What?""
He looked at me.
"Vanessa wasn't new.""
The room tilted.
I gripped the edge of the table.
"What are you saying?""
Nathan closed his eyes.
"I knew Vanessa before I met you.""
For a second, I couldn’t process the words.
Then I felt something cold spread through me.
"How long?""
"Emily—"
"How long?""
He whispered:
"Almost two years.""
I stared at him.
Two years.
Before our wedding.
Before Lucas.
Before everything.
"You told me you met her at work.""
"I did.""
"When?""
"Later.""
My voice became quiet.
"After you already knew her.""
He nodded.
I laughed.
A broken laugh.
"You didn't just cheat on me.""
"No.""
"You built a life with me while keeping a person from your past hidden.""
Nathan looked devastated.
"I ended things with her.""
"Apparently not.""
He had no response.
The truth was unfolding piece by piece.
And every piece cut deeper.
"So my father found out.""
Nathan nodded.
"He confronted me.""
"When?""
"Before Lucas was born.""
I closed my eyes.
I remembered that time.
The months when I was pregnant.
The months Nathan seemed stressed.
The months he said work was overwhelming.
I had believed him.
Because I loved him.
"What did my father say?""
Nathan looked at me.
"He told me if I ever hurt you, he would make sure you were protected.""
I looked at the papers.
"And this?""
Nathan nodded.
"That was part of the protection.""
I frowned.
"I don't understand.""
"Your father created a legal structure around the house.""
I stared.
"Why?""
"Because he knew the house was your biggest asset.""
I looked around the living room.
The walls.
The photos.
The place where Lucas took his first steps.
The place where we celebrated birthdays.
My home.
"He wanted to make sure nobody could take it from you.""
I looked back at Nathan.
"Then why does this exist?""
His face darkened.
"Because someone tried to change it.""
"Who?""
He hesitated.
Again.
Always hesitating.
"Your father’s business partner.""
"And what did he want?""
Nathan looked at the documents.
"He wanted control.""
I shook my head.
"But my signature is here.""
Nathan nodded.
"That's why I said your father.""
I felt my anger rising again.
"You just blamed my dead father for something someone else did.""
"No.""
Nathan looked at me.
"I didn't.""
"Then why did you say his name?""
"Because your father’s old partner used his authority.""
"What authority?""
Nathan reached into his pocket.
He pulled out his phone.
Then he opened a message.
He handed it to me.
The sender name was unfamiliar.
But the message was clear.
*Nathan, you know what your father-in-law wanted. Emily leaving for the retreat is the easiest way. Once she signs the transfer, everything falls into place.*
I looked up.
"Retreat.""
Nathan nodded.
"That was the trip.""
My heart stopped.
"What retreat?""
"Your father's old foundation.""
I stared.
"My father's foundation?""
"Yes.""
"Why would I go there?""
Nathan looked miserable.
"Because it was supposed to keep you away long enough for the transfer to happen.""
The room went silent.
I understood now.
The trip wasn't a vacation.
It wasn't a wellness retreat.
It was a trap.
Someone had planned to send me away.
Someone had planned to use my absence.
Someone had planned to take my home while I was gone.
I looked at Nathan.
"And you agreed.""
His eyes filled with shame.
"Yes.""
The honesty hurt.
More than another lie would have.
"Why?""
He looked toward the stairs.
Toward where Lucas was waiting.
Then back at me.
"Because I thought you were going to leave me anyway.""
I stared.
"You believed a stranger over your wife.""
"I was afraid.""
"You were selfish.""
He nodded.
"I know.""
I picked up the papers again.
There was still one thing I didn't understand.
If Nathan thought I was leaving…
If someone was trying to steal my house…
Then why was Vanessa involved?
I looked at the necklace.
The necklace that started all of this.
"Why did he give you permission to bring her here?""
Nathan looked confused.
"Who?""
"The person behind this.""
His face changed.
Because he knew something I didn’t.
"Emily...""
"Who planned for Vanessa to move in?""
Nathan didn’t answer.
The silence was enough.
I walked closer.
"Who?""
Finally, he whispered:
"The person who contacted me wasn't your father's business partner.""
My heart sank.
"Then who was it?""
Nathan looked at me.
And the answer destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.
"It was someone who knew your family.""
A sound came from upstairs.
A floorboard creaked.
Then Lucas called out.
"Mom?""
I looked toward the stairs.
Nathan followed my gaze.
And then my phone rang.
The caller ID appeared.
A number I hadn't seen in years.
A number that should have been disconnected.
A number that belonged to someone who was supposed to be gone.
My father's old phone number.
I stared at the screen.
Nathan went completely pale.
Because he knew something I didn’t.
And when I answered, the voice on the other end said one sentence.
"Emily, don't trust your husband.""
I froze.
Because it wasn't a recording.
It wasn't a message.
May you like
It was a living voice.
And it was someone I knew.
