Chapter 7: The Night My Father Disappeared
The message stayed on my screen.
*Ask Nathan what happened the night your father disappeared.*
Not died.
Disappeared.
The word felt impossible.
Because my entire family had spent four years believing the same story.
My father had gotten sick.
My father had passed away.
My father was gone.
There had been a funeral.
There had been tears.
There had been a goodbye.
But now, in the middle of my living room, surrounded by birthday decorations for my son, I was being told that the biggest loss of my life might have been built on a lie.
I looked at Nathan.
He didn't speak.
He didn't ask who sent the message.
He didn't ask what it said.
Because he already knew.
"You knew.""
His face tightened.
"Emily...""
"You knew something happened that night.""
Nathan looked down.
"I knew there were things I didn't understand.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
I held up the phone.
"You knew.""
He looked exhausted.
"I knew your father disappeared before everyone believed he died.""
The room felt colder.
I stepped back.
"How long?""
Nathan hesitated.
"Since the night it happened.""
The answer hit harder than I expected.
Four years.
Four years of birthdays.
Four years of holidays.
Four years of Lucas asking why Grandpa couldn't visit.
And Nathan had been carrying this secret.
I sat down slowly.
"Tell me.""
Nathan remained standing.
"Emily...""
"Tell me.""
My voice was quiet.
But there was no room for him to avoid it.
He looked toward the stairs.
Toward our son's room.
Then back at me.
"Your father called me that night.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"He said he needed to meet me.""
"Why would my father call you?""
Nathan looked ashamed.
"Because he knew.""
"Knew what?""
He took a breath.
"About Vanessa.""
My stomach dropped.
Of course.
Everything always came back to her.
"What did he know?""
Nathan sat down across from me.
"He knew I had seen her again.""
I stared.
"You saw her again after you married me?""
He closed his eyes.
"Yes.""
The confession was quiet.
But it destroyed whatever tiny part of me still hoped there was a misunderstanding.
"When?""
"Before Lucas was born.""
I looked away.
My son.
The person who had made me believe our family was stronger than anything.
Even then, Nathan had been hiding.
"My father found out.""
Nathan nodded.
"Yes.""
"What did he do?""
"He confronted me.""
"How?""
"He told me to leave you alone if I couldn't be the husband you deserved.""
My eyes filled.
Because I could imagine my father saying that.
He loved me fiercely.
He wasn't the kind of man who would stay silent when someone hurt his daughter.
"What happened after that?""
Nathan rubbed his hands together.
"I stopped talking to Vanessa.""
"Did you?""
"Yes.""
I looked at him.
"And then?""
He swallowed.
"Then years later, she came back.""
"Convenient.""
"I know.""
"No, you don't.""
I stood.
"You don't know what it feels like to find out your entire marriage has been surrounded by people who knew more about your life than you did.""
Nathan looked down.
"I deserve that.""
I almost hated that he wasn't fighting.
Anger needed something to push against.
His regret made everything more complicated.
"What happened the night my father disappeared?""
Nathan took a long breath.
"It started with a phone call.""
"From him?""
"Yes.""
"Tell me everything.""
Nathan looked at the floor.
"He asked me to meet him at an old storage building.""
I frowned.
"My father hated abandoned places.""
"I know.""
"Why would he go there?""
"Because he believed something important was hidden there.""
"What?""
Nathan looked at me.
"The truth about your inheritance.""
I felt my heartbeat increase.
"The house?""
"More than the house.""
He paused.
"Your father had discovered someone had been moving money from accounts connected to his foundation.""
My eyes widened.
"Michael.""
Nathan nodded.
"Yes.""
My hands went cold.
"My uncle?""
"Not your uncle.""
I looked confused.
"Michael isn't related to you.""
I realized what he meant.
Nathan’s brother.
The man who smiled at me at family dinners.
The man who held Lucas when he was born.
The man who had stood beside Nathan at our wedding.
"What did he do?""
Nathan looked away.
"He created fake documents.""
"Like the ones I found?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because he believed your father had promised him ownership.""
I shook my head.
"My father would never.""
"No.""
Nathan agreed.
"He wouldn't.""
The certainty in his voice surprised me.
"Then why did Michael think he could?""
"Because someone convinced him.""
I stared.
"Who?""
Nathan looked at the photograph of Vanessa on the table.
I followed his eyes.
"No.""
He didn't answer.
"No.""
I repeated.
"You're saying Vanessa was involved?""
"I don't know.""
"But you think she was.""
Nathan looked miserable.
"Yes.""
I picked up the photograph.
A younger Vanessa.
A younger Nathan.
Before me.
Before our marriage.
Before Lucas.
"Why did she come back?""
Nathan whispered:
"Because she knew about the money.""
"And my house.""
"And your father.""
I looked at him.
"How much of this did you know?""
He didn't answer.
"Nathan.""
"I knew enough.""
My chest tightened.
"Enough?""
"Enough to know something was wrong.""
"And you did nothing?""
His eyes filled.
"I thought I could fix it.""
I laughed bitterly.
"That is the biggest lie people tell themselves.""
He looked at me.
"What?""
"That they can control the damage after they start it.""
The words stayed between us.
Because he knew.
He had thought he could balance everything.
Me.
Vanessa.
Michael.
The lies.
The documents.
And somehow keep our family intact.
Instead, he had destroyed it.
I looked at the letter again.
My father's warning.
The promise Nathan broke.
"Did my father die because of this?""
Nathan went completely still.
I knew immediately.
I knew before he answered.
"Nathan.""
His voice was barely audible.
"I don't know.""
The words hurt.
Because "I don't know" meant there was more.
"Explain.""
He looked at me.
"That night, your father and I argued.""
"About Vanessa?""
"Yes.""
"What did he say?""
Nathan closed his eyes.
"He said if I continued down that path, I would lose everything.""
I swallowed.
"And?""
"And I told him he didn't understand.""
The shame on his face was clear.
"What happened after?""
"I left.""
"You left him there?""
"Yes.""
My anger returned.
"You left my father alone?""
"I didn't know something would happen.""
"But something did.""
Nathan didn't answer.
Because that was the truth.
I walked away from him.
I couldn't look at him.
Not after imagining my father alone that night.
Not after realizing Nathan might have been the last person to see him.
Then my phone rang.
Again.
Same unknown number.
I answered immediately.
No one spoke for a few seconds.
Then a woman's voice whispered:
"Emily.""
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
It was Vanessa.
"Where did you get my number?""
She ignored the question.
"You need to stop asking Nathan for answers.""
My grip tightened.
"Why?""
"Because Nathan doesn't know the whole story.""
I looked at him.
He was watching me.
"What story?""
Vanessa breathed softly.
"The night your father disappeared...""
A pause.
"He didn't disappear.""
My heart stopped.
"What are you saying?""
Her voice lowered.
"He was taken.""
The room went silent.
I couldn't move.
"By who?""
Another pause.
Then she said the one thing I never expected.
"The same person who forged your signature.""
I looked at Nathan.
Then at the documents.
Then back at the phone.
"Who?""
Vanessa whispered:
"Emily...""
Her voice cracked.
"Your father wasn't trying to protect you from Nathan.""
A chill moved through me.
"Then who was he protecting me from?""
The answer came quietly.
And it changed everything.
"Your own family.""
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Because suddenly, the person I trusted least wasn't the only person I needed to fear.
And upstairs, sleeping peacefully in his room, was my six-year-old son.
A child connected to every secret.
Every lie.
Every person who wanted something from my family.
Then Nathan’s phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen.
His face turned white.
"What is it?""
He didn't answer.
I walked toward him.
Slowly.
"Who is it?""
Nathan turned the phone around.
The message was from Michael.
Only four words.
*She knows everything now.*
May you like
And underneath it:
*Get Lucas out.*
