Chapter 8: The Person Behind The Plan
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
The message remained on Nathan’s phone screen.
*She knows everything now.*
*Get Lucas out.*
Four words.
That was all.
But those four words changed the meaning of everything that had happened that night.
This was no longer about a marriage falling apart.
It was no longer about Vanessa.
It was no longer about a stolen necklace or a forged signature.
Someone was afraid.
Someone knew I had found the truth.
And now they were talking about my son.
I looked at Nathan.
"Who sent that?""
He didn’t answer.
"Nathan.""
His eyes stayed fixed on the phone.
"Michael.""
The name felt like a warning.
I took a step back.
"Your brother.""
He nodded.
The man who had brought presents for Lucas.
The man who hugged me every Christmas.
The man who always told me I was lucky to have Nathan.
The man who had apparently been standing close enough to watch our family break apart.
"What does he mean by 'get Lucas out'?""
Nathan looked at me.
"I don't know.""
I stared.
"Don't lie to me.""
"I'm not.""
His voice cracked.
"I swear.""
I believed the fear in his eyes.
That was the terrifying part.
Because Nathan had lied to me for years.
But right now, he looked genuinely scared.
A sound came from upstairs.
A small movement.
A floorboard.
Lucas.
My entire body reacted before my mind did.
I ran toward the stairs.
"Mom?""
Lucas stood at the top step.
His birthday crown was still on his head.
His eyes were tired.
But he was awake.
"What happened?""
I forced myself to smile.
"Nothing, sweetheart.""
He looked past me.
At Nathan.
At the tension in the room.
Children notice everything.
Even when adults try to hide it.
"Is Daddy leaving?""
The question almost broke me.
I walked up and hugged him.
"No.""
I held him tightly.
"Nobody is leaving you.""
I felt him relax slightly.
But over his shoulder, I saw Nathan watching us.
And I wondered if he believed that anymore.
After putting Lucas back to bed, I returned downstairs.
Nathan was still standing by the table.
The documents were spread out.
The necklace.
The photograph.
My father's letter.
Every piece of the nightmare was sitting in front of us.
"I want the truth.""
Nathan nodded.
"I know.""
"No more protecting me.""
"I understand.""
"No more deciding what I can handle.""
He looked at me.
"I understand.""
I sat across from him.
"Start with Michael.""
Nathan took a breath.
"My brother always believed life was unfair.""
I said nothing.
"He thought our father failed him. He thought everyone saw me as the successful one.""
"Was he?""
Nathan looked down.
"Not in the way he thought.""
"Explain.""
"My parents struggled financially when we were kids. I got a scholarship. I left town. I built my career.""
"And Michael?""
"He stayed.""
There was something sad in Nathan’s voice.
"He believed staying meant he deserved more.""
I looked at the documents.
"So he wanted your family’s money.""
"Not just money.""
"What else?""
Nathan hesitated.
"Control.""
The word made sense.
Because people who want money usually ask for money.
People who want control try to take everything.
"The house.""
"The inheritance.""
"Your marriage.""
Nathan nodded.
"He believed if he controlled the people around him, he controlled the outcome.""
I thought about Vanessa.
"Where does she fit?""
Nathan was silent.
Then:
"Michael introduced us because he knew.""
"Knew what?""
"That I had weaknesses.""
My expression hardened.
"You had choices.""
"I know.""
"Don't forget that.""
"I won't.""
He looked at the floor.
"I was unhappy.""
The words hurt.
Even though I already knew.
Maybe because hearing them made them real.
"With me?""
Nathan looked up.
"No.""
That answer surprised me.
"No?""
He shook his head.
"I was unhappy with myself.""
I stared at him.
"And instead of dealing with that, you let someone else convince you I was the problem.""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
For once, he didn't defend himself.
"I let Michael make me believe that leaving was easier than fixing what was broken.""
I looked away.
"Was Vanessa part of that?""
"Yes.""
"Did she know about me?""
"Yes.""
"Did she know about Lucas?""
"Yes.""
My stomach tightened.
"Did she know about the plan to send me away?""
Nathan hesitated.
That was enough.
"She did.""
The anger came back.
"She was going to move into my house.""
"Yes.""
"She was wearing my mother's necklace.""
"Yes.""
"And you expect me to believe you were manipulated?""
Nathan looked at me.
"No.""
The answer was immediate.
"I don't.""
That was the first thing he said tonight that sounded completely honest.
"I made choices.""
I nodded.
"Good.""
The room was silent.
Then my phone buzzed.
A new message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
It was a photo.
My breath stopped.
It was Lucas.
Sleeping.
Taken from outside his bedroom window.
My blood turned cold.
I stood immediately.
"When was this taken?""
Nathan grabbed the phone.
His face changed.
"Emily...""
"When?""
He zoomed in.
The timestamp showed:
Ten minutes ago.
I looked upstairs.
My son was asleep.
Someone had been near him.
Someone had been watching our house.
Nathan grabbed his keys.
"We need to leave.""
I looked at him.
"Now you want to protect us?""
He stopped.
Because he knew he deserved that.
"I know what I did.""
His voice shook.
"But Michael is dangerous.""
I stared.
"You knew that?""
"Not like this.""
"What did you think would happen?""
He had no answer.
I grabbed my coat.
Not because I trusted Nathan.
Because I trusted my instincts.
Something had changed.
This wasn't just betrayal anymore.
This was fear.
We woke Lucas quietly.
I told him we were going on an adventure.
He smiled sleepily.
That broke my heart.
Because he believed me.
Outside, the night air was cold.
Nathan unlocked the car.
Then stopped.
I saw it too.
A black SUV parked across the street.
The lights were off.
The engine was running.
My heart raced.
"Is that Michael?""
Nathan shook his head.
"I don't know.""
The SUV suddenly turned on its headlights.
Straight at us.
Lucas grabbed my hand.
"Mom?""
I stepped in front of him.
The SUV started moving.
Slowly.
Toward us.
Nathan moved forward.
"Get inside.""
The vehicle stopped at the end of the driveway.
A window rolled down.
And a voice called out.
"Emily.""
I froze.
Because I knew the voice.
Not Michael.
Not Vanessa.
Someone else.
Someone from my past.
Someone I never thought I would see again.
The person stepped out of the SUV.
And under the streetlight, I saw her face.
My father's former assistant.
The woman who had been at his funeral.
The woman who cried harder than anyone.
The woman who told me she loved my father like family.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
"I tried to stop them.""
I couldn't speak.
She looked at Nathan.
Then back at me.
"You need to know the truth before Michael finds you.""
Nathan stepped forward.
"Where have you been?""
She ignored him.
Her eyes stayed on me.
"Your father didn't disappear because of a business deal.""
A chill went through me.
"Then why?""
She looked toward the house.
Then whispered:
"Because he discovered someone was planning to hurt Lucas.""
My blood froze.
I pulled my son closer.
"What?""
She reached into her bag.
Pulled out a small box.
And handed it to me.
"Your father left this for you.""
I opened it.
Inside was a flash drive.
And a note.
Three words.
*Watch the video.*
I looked at Nathan.
He looked terrified.
Because he knew.
Whatever was on that flash drive…
was the truth everyone had been trying to hide.
The woman stepped closer.
"Emily, before you watch it, you need to understand something.""
"What?""
She looked directly at me.
"Your father wasn't afraid of losing his money.""
A pause.
"He was afraid of losing his granddaughter.""
I froze.
"My granddaughter?""
The woman’s face changed.
Then I understood.
She wasn't talking about Lucas.
She was talking about someone else.
Someone I didn't know existed.
And before I could ask another question, Nathan whispered:
"Emily...""
His voice broke.
"There’s something about your father’s last night that I never told you.""
I turned.
"What?""
He looked at the flash drive.
Then at me.
"Your father wasn't protecting you from Michael.""
May you like
He swallowed.
"He was protecting you from me.""
