Amused

Chapter 10: The Truth My Father Left Behind

Nathan held the phone against his ear.

Nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Rachel.

Not even Lucas, who was still holding onto my arm.

The voice on the other end was calm.

Too calm.

"Brother, it's time you finally told Emily what happened after I left you alone with her father.""

Nathan’s face lost all color.

I stared at him.

"Put it on speaker.""

His eyes met mine.

For a second, I thought he would refuse.

Then he slowly pressed the button.

Michael’s voice filled the room.

"Emily.""

I felt my hands tighten.

"Michael.""

A small laugh came through the phone.

"You finally know.""

"Know what?""

"The truth.""

I looked at Nathan.

"No more secrets.""

Michael sighed.

"You always were like your father.""

The words made my stomach turn.

"What does that mean?""

"It means you keep looking for the truth even when it hurts you.""

I stepped closer to the phone.

"Did you try to take my house?""

Silence.

Then:

"Your house?""

His voice changed.

Almost amused.

"That's what he told you?""

I frowned.

"Who?""

"Your father.""

Rachel looked at me.

Michael continued.

"Your father made everyone believe he was protecting you.""

"Wasn't he?""

"No.""

The answer came instantly.

"He was protecting his favorite child.""

I felt anger rise.

"My father loved me.""

"He loved you more than he loved being fair.""

The words were meant to hurt.

They didn't.

Because I knew my father.

But Michael continued.

"He gave you everything.""

"The house.""

"The foundation.""

"The trust.""

"And what did I get?""

Nobody answered.

"You think people become angry because they are evil.""

His voice became colder.

"Sometimes they become angry because they spend their entire lives watching someone else get chosen.""

I looked at Nathan.

Then Rachel.

"Where is this going?""

Michael laughed softly.

"Ask Nathan what happened after I left him with your father that night.""

My eyes moved toward my husband.

"Nathan.""

He looked away.

That was enough.

"Tell me.""

Nathan closed his eyes.

"I didn't kill your father.""

The sentence came out quickly.

I froze.

Because I hadn't asked that.

But he had answered it anyway.

Michael laughed.

"See?""

"He always jumps to defend himself.""

Nathan grabbed the phone.

"Michael, stop.""

"No.""

Michael's voice sharpened.

"You don't get to pretend you're innocent.""

Nathan went silent.

I looked at him.

"What happened?""

For several seconds, he didn't speak.

Then:

"Your father and I argued.""

"I know that.""

"No.""

Nathan looked at me.

"You don't know what we argued about.""

I waited.

"He knew I had been talking to Vanessa.""

My chest tightened.

"He knew I was confused.""

"Confused?""

Nathan nodded.

"I was angry. I felt trapped. I thought everyone was judging me.""

"And my father?""

"He told me I needed to make a choice.""

"What choice?""

Nathan looked down.

"You.""

The answer hurt.

"But I didn't make one.""

The room went quiet.

"I left him there.""

I stared.

"And then?""

Nathan’s voice became smaller.

"I got a call twenty minutes later.""

"From who?""

"Michael.""

Rachel closed her eyes.

I noticed.

"You called him?""

I asked.

Nathan looked at Michael's name on the phone.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because I was scared.""

The honesty hurt.

"I thought something had happened.""

"What did you do?""

"I went back.""

My heart raced.

"And?""

Nathan looked at me.

"Your father was gone.""

The room froze.

"Just gone?""

He nodded.

"The office was empty.""

"Did you call the police?""

Nathan didn't answer.

I felt something cold move through me.

"Nathan.""

He looked broken.

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because Michael told me not to.""

I stared.

The truth finally arrived.

Not all at once.

Not dramatically.

Just piece by piece.

Like a door slowly opening.

"You listened to him.""

Nathan nodded.

"I thought he knew what he was doing.""

"And you trusted him.""

"Yes.""

"More than my father.""

His eyes filled.

"Yes.""

Michael’s voice interrupted.

"Don't make him sound like a victim.""

I grabbed the phone.

"You were there.""

Silence.

"You were involved.""

Michael didn't deny it.

"I was trying to protect what was mine.""

"What was yours?""

"The life your father took from me.""

I shook my head.

"You hurt my father.""

"I confronted him.""

"You threatened him.""

"No.""

Michael's voice changed.

"I wanted him to understand.""

"Understand what?""

"That he couldn't control everyone forever.""

Rachel stepped forward.

"Emily.""

I looked at her.

She was crying.

"What?""

She whispered:

"Your father recorded Michael.""

Michael went silent.

Rachel continued.

"He knew.""

My heart raced.

"Knew what?""

"That Michael wasn't working alone.""

The room became still.

I looked at Nathan.

Then at the phone.

"Who else?""

Michael didn’t speak.

That silence was the answer.

"Who else?""

Finally, Michael said:

"Ask Rachel.""

Everyone turned.

Rachel froze.

My stomach dropped.

"Rachel?""

She looked away.

"No.""

My voice was quiet.

"No more.""

Rachel closed her eyes.

"I made a mistake.""

"What mistake?""

"I helped your father.""

"That doesn't explain anything.""

She looked at the floor.

"I found the financial records.""

"With Michael?""

She nodded.

"But I didn't know how far he would go.""

I stared.

"You helped him.""

"I thought I was helping your father.""

The words confused me.

"Explain.""

Rachel wiped her eyes.

"Your father asked me to investigate.""

She looked at Nathan.

"Michael had been moving money.""

Then at me.

"But someone else had been helping him.""

"Who?""

Rachel hesitated.

Then said:

"Vanessa.""

Of course.

But then Rachel continued.

"And someone inside your family.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Who?""

Rachel looked at Nathan.

Then back at me.

"Your father never believed Nathan was the mastermind.""

I waited.

"He believed Nathan was being used.""

My eyes moved toward my husband.

"Then who?""

Rachel took a breath.

"Your uncle.""

I frowned.

"My uncle?""

"Your mother's brother.""

I froze.

I barely remembered him.

He had disappeared from our lives years ago.

My father never spoke about him.

"Why?""

Rachel whispered:

"Because he believed your father stole his future.""

The same story.

The same anger.

The same resentment.

Everyone wanted something from my father.

From me.

From my family.

Michael spoke again.

"And now you know.""

I looked at the phone.

"Why tell me?""

A pause.

Then:

"Because I want the truth out.""

I almost laughed.

"After everything?""

"Emily.""

His voice softened.

"You think I wanted things to go this far?""

"Yes.""

"You don't understand.""

"You're right.""

I looked at Nathan.

"I don't understand how everyone around me decided they had the right to destroy my life.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael said:

"There's one thing you still don't know.""

I waited.

"Your father didn't disappear that night because of the money.""

"What?""

"He disappeared because he found the final evidence.""

"Where?""

Michael laughed quietly.

"Inside the house.""

My heart stopped.

The house.

Again.

I looked around.

The walls.

The floors.

The memories.

My father had hidden something here.

Something important.

Nathan suddenly looked toward the fireplace.

"Wait.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

He walked slowly toward it.

"My father-in-law always said the house remembered everything.""

Rachel followed.

"The fireplace.""

"What?""

"Your father rebuilt it himself.""

Nathan touched the stone.

Then pressed something hidden beneath the edge.

A small compartment opened.

Inside was a box.

My hands shook as I took it out.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

A recording device.

And one final letter.

I opened it.

My father’s handwriting.

*Emily, if you found this, then you finally know the truth.*

I cried.

But I kept reading.

*Nathan failed me. Michael betrayed me. Vanessa lied. But none of them was the reason I hid this.*

A pause.

*I hid this because I learned something about myself.*

I frowned.

*I spent my life protecting my family from enemies outside the house. I never noticed the greatest danger was how easily people I loved could hurt each other.*

My eyes filled.

*Emily, don't spend your life searching for someone to blame. Build a life where nobody has the power to take your peace away.*

The final line made me stop.

*And forgive Nathan only if he proves he deserves forgiveness. Not because he asks for it.*

I looked at Nathan.

He was crying silently.

Not asking.

Not defending.

Just accepting.

The recording device contained the final proof.

Michael’s confession.

Vanessa’s messages.

The forged documents.

Everything.

Months later, the truth came out.

Michael and Vanessa faced the consequences of what they had done.

The legal battle over the foundation ended.

The house remained mine.

But the hardest part wasn't winning.

It was deciding what to do with Nathan.

He didn't ask me to forget.

He didn't ask me to pretend.

He moved out.

He went to therapy.

He spent months rebuilding the trust he had destroyed.

Not with promises.

With actions.

Slowly.

Quietly.

One day, Lucas asked me:

"Is Daddy coming to my soccer game?""

I smiled.

"Yes.""

"Are you two friends again?""

I looked at the field.

At Nathan standing near the sidelines.

At the man who had hurt me.

And the man who was trying to become better.

"I don't know yet.""

Lucas nodded.

Because children understand more than we think.

Years later, I still kept my father's letter.

Not because it reminded me of betrayal.

Because it reminded me of something more important.

The truth doesn't always save a family.

Sometimes it breaks it apart.

Sometimes it forces people to leave.

Sometimes it reveals that the person you trusted most was the person who hurt you.

But sometimes…

truth gives people the chance to become someone different.

Someone better.

And when I look back at the night I came home early to surprise my family, I don't remember the necklace.

I don't remember the party.

I don't remember the cake.

I remember the moment my son ran into my arms.

Because before the lies.

Before the secrets.

Before everything fell apart.

There was still one thing nobody could take from me.

The love I had for my child.

And the promise I made to myself:

May you like

Never again would I let anyone make plans for my life…

when I wasn't in the room. :::
