Chapter 9: The Truth Buried Between Two Families
Victoria remained frozen long after the call ended.
The phone was still pressed against her ear.
The screen had already gone dark.
But her mother’s final words continued repeating in her mind.
*“Your father didn’t die investigating the Sterling family.””*
*“He died because he discovered what our family did to them.””*
For seven years, Victoria had lived with one version of the story.
Her father was a hardworking accountant.
A loyal man.
A man who died too suddenly.
A man whose death left a hole in her family that nobody could explain.
Now everything she believed was breaking apart.
Julian slowly stepped closer.
“Victoria.””
She looked at him.
For once, she didn’t see him as the Sterling heir.
She saw someone else who had lost a parent.
Someone who understood the pain of having a family story rewritten.
“My father…”
Her voice failed.
Julian waited.
“My father was involved.””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew what she meant.
Daniel Ashford wasn’t just connected to the mystery.
He was part of it.
Elena looked at the paper again.
“Richard trusted your father.””
Victoria shook her head.
“No.””
She stepped backward.
“That can’t be true.””
Mrs. Sterling looked at her sadly.
“Victoria.””
“My father hated secrets.””
She looked at the documents scattered across the desk.
“He hated corruption. He spent his entire life doing the right thing.””
Julian’s expression softened.
“Maybe he was trying to fix something.””
Victoria looked at him.
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
Nobody had an answer.
Because that was the question that hurt the most.
Not what he did.
Not what he discovered.
But why he left her alone with a lie.
A quiet knock came from the hallway.
Everyone turned.
A man stood outside the study.
One of the oldest employees of the Sterling mansion.
Thomas.
He had worked for Richard for more than thirty years.
“Mr. Sterling.””
Julian looked surprised.
“Thomas?””
The old man stepped inside.
“I heard the phone call.””
Nobody spoke.
Thomas looked at Victoria.
“I think it’s time.””
Julian frowned.
“Time for what?””
Thomas looked toward the hidden compartment.
“For the last truth your father left behind.””
Victoria felt a chill.
“There’s more?””
Thomas nodded.
“Richard knew this night would come.””
Julian looked angry.
“How many secrets did my father leave?””
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“Enough to protect you.””
“That’s not protection.””
Julian’s voice cracked.
“That’s making me live a lie.””
Thomas accepted the anger.
Because he understood.
“I know.””
A long silence followed.
Then Thomas reached into his jacket.
He pulled out an old envelope.
The paper looked fragile.
Worn.
Like it had been carried for years.
Julian stared.
“What is that?””
Thomas looked at Elena.
“Richard gave this to me the night before he died.””
Elena stepped forward.
“Why didn’t you give it to Julian?””
Thomas looked at her.
“Because Richard told me not to.””
Julian’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
Thomas looked at the envelope.
“Because he said his son was not ready to know the truth.””
Victoria whispered:
“And now?””
Thomas looked around the room.
“Now he has no choice.””
Julian took the envelope.
His hands were tense.
Inside was a letter.
But unlike the others…
This one was addressed differently.
*To Julian and Victoria.*
Victoria stared.
“Me?””
Julian looked at her.
“Why would he write to both of us?””
They opened it together.
The handwriting was Richard’s.
The words were clear.
“If this letter reaches you, it means both families have finally discovered the truth they spent years avoiding.””
Victoria swallowed.
Both families.
“Julian, I know you will feel betrayed by the people closest to you. You will want someone to blame. But remember this: the person who caused this tragedy is not the only person responsible.””
Julian continued reading.
“Victoria, if you are reading this, it means your father’s secret has finally reached you.””
Her hands trembled.
“Daniel Ashford was not my enemy.””
Victoria looked up.
“What?””
Julian kept reading.
“He was my ally.””
The room went silent.
Victoria stared at the letter.
“My father was helping him?””
Elena nodded slowly.
“It makes sense.””
Everyone looked at her.
“Richard and Daniel were both investigating the missing money.””
Julian continued.
“Daniel discovered Sebastian was moving company funds through hidden accounts. But he also discovered something worse.””
Julian paused.
“What?””
His voice became quieter.
“The person helping Sebastian was someone neither of us expected.””
Victoria’s heart sank.
Not again.
Another hidden person.
Another secret.
Julian turned the page.
“We believed Sebastian was the mastermind. We were wrong.””
The room became colder.
Thomas whispered:
“No.””
Julian looked at him.
“You knew?””
Thomas looked away.
“I suspected.””
“Who?””
Julian read the final lines.
Then he stopped.
Victoria saw his expression.
“Julian.””
He slowly handed her the letter.
She read.
And felt the world disappear.
The name was written there.
The person who had helped Sebastian.
The person who had protected him.
The person who had allowed two families to destroy themselves.
*Margaret Ashford.*
Victoria’s mother.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Julian watched her.
“Victoria…”
“My mother?””
Her voice broke.
“My mother helped Sebastian?””
Nobody answered.
Because the evidence was there.
Richard’s words.
The hidden letter.
The connection.
But Victoria couldn’t accept it.
“My mother raised me.””
She looked at everyone.
“She spent years telling me my father was innocent.””
Elena stepped closer.
“Maybe she was trying to protect you.””
Victoria looked at her.
“By lying?””
The question hurt because it sounded familiar.
The same question Julian had asked about his own mother.
The same pain.
The same betrayal.
Julian suddenly looked at the documents again.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
He picked up one of the financial reports.
“The forged document.””
Elena moved closer.
“What about it?””
Julian pointed.
“The signature.””
Victoria looked.
Then froze.
Because she recognized it.
Not Elena’s.
Not Richard’s.
Not Sebastian’s.
It was her father’s signature.
Daniel Ashford’s.
But the date was impossible.
“This was signed after my father died.””
Silence.
Julian looked at Elena.
“That means someone used Daniel’s name after his death.””
Victoria felt a terrible realization forming.
Her mother wasn’t just connected.
Someone had used her father’s identity to cover the crime.
And then blamed Elena.
Thomas suddenly looked toward the window.
“Someone is here.””
Everyone turned.
Outside the glass, a shadow moved across the garden.
Julian immediately stepped forward.
“Stay here.””
But Victoria grabbed his arm.
“No.””
He looked at her.
“I’m coming.””
For years, she had been protected by lies.
Not anymore.
The group moved through the mansion toward the back entrance.
The garden was dark.
The wind moved through the trees.
Then they saw him.
Sebastian.
Standing near the old fountain.
Waiting.
Julian walked forward.
“You knew.””
Sebastian looked at him.
“I knew you would eventually find this.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“You worked with my mother.””
Sebastian’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Julian saw it.
“You used both families.””
Sebastian laughed quietly.
“No.””
He looked at the mansion.
“I saved both families.””
Victoria stared.
“You destroyed them.””
Sebastian shook his head.
“You still don’t understand.””
He stepped closer.
“Your father and Richard were going to expose everything.””
Julian’s eyes hardened.
“Everything about what?””
Sebastian looked at Victoria.
“About the money.””
Then at Julian.
“About the deaths.””
A pause.
“And about the child your family erased from history.””
Everyone froze.
Elena whispered:
“What child?””
Sebastian smiled.
A smile filled with years of resentment.
“The one Richard Sterling spent his entire life protecting.””
Julian stared.
“What are you talking about?””
Sebastian looked toward Elena.
Then said the words that made her face turn white.
“The child is the reason Richard chose Elena.””
A cold silence fell.
Victoria looked at Elena.
And Elena whispered:
“Julian…”
Her voice trembled.
“Your father wasn’t protecting me.””
May you like
She looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“He was protecting you from the truth about who I really am.””
