Chapter 8: The Woman Behind the Betrayal

The photograph remained on the desk.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody even breathed normally.

Because the image had changed everything again.

Sebastian Sterling was no longer just a suspicious relative.

He was connected to the beginning of the betrayal.

But Richard’s final words created a new mystery.

*“The betrayal began with him. But the reason was her.””*

Victoria stared at the sentence.

Her mind raced.

Her.

Who was Richard talking about?

Her mother?

Someone else?

A person connected to both families?

Julian picked up the photograph carefully.

“He knew.””

Elena looked at him.

“Knew what?””

“That Sebastian was involved.””

His fingers tightened around the picture.

“But he also knew Sebastian wasn’t acting alone.””

Mrs. Sterling looked away.

And that small movement caught Victoria’s attention.

“Mrs. Sterling.””

The older woman slowly looked back.

“You know who ‘her’ is.””

It wasn’t a question.

It was an observation.

Everyone went quiet.

Mrs. Sterling closed her eyes.

For several seconds, she looked exhausted.

Like she had been carrying a weight for years and finally realized she could no longer hold it.

“Yes.””

Julian stepped forward.

“Who?””

His mother looked at him.

And the sadness in her eyes was worse than fear.

“Your aunt.””

Julian froze.

“My aunt died.””

“I know.””

“Then how could she be the reason?””

Mrs. Sterling looked at the photograph.

“Because she wasn’t supposed to die.””

The room went silent.

Victoria felt a chill.

“What are you saying?””

Mrs. Sterling sat down slowly.

“Five years ago, everyone believed your aunt died in an accident.””

Julian stared.

“She did.””

“No.””

The word was quiet.

But it destroyed the last piece of certainty.

“She was removed.””

Elena’s face turned pale.

“Removed?””

Mrs. Sterling nodded.

“Richard discovered the truth. Your aunt was involved with Sebastian.””

Julian looked shocked.

“My uncle and my aunt?””

“Yes.””

Victoria frowned.

“But why?””

Mrs. Sterling looked at the documents on the desk.

“Money.””

Julian shook his head.

“Sebastian had everything.””

“No.””

His mother looked at him.

“That’s what people never understood.””

She paused.

“Sebastian didn’t want wealth.””

“Then what?””

“He wanted control.””

The answer felt colder than expected.

Mrs. Sterling continued.

“Your father was the face of Sterling Holdings. Everyone admired him. Everyone trusted him.””

She looked at Julian.

“Sebastian spent his entire life standing behind him.””

Victoria understood.

“He wanted what your father had.””

“Yes.””

Mrs. Sterling nodded.

“But Richard found out.””

Julian looked at the video again.

“Then why didn’t he expose him?””

“Because of your aunt.””

Everyone became silent.

Mrs. Sterling’s voice softened.

“Richard loved his family. Even when they betrayed him.””

She looked down.

“He believed Sebastian could be saved.””

Julian laughed bitterly.

“After everything?””

“Yes.””

His mother nodded.

“That was your father’s weakness.””

Victoria noticed the pain in Julian’s face.

Because he understood.

Richard Sterling had been a man who believed people could change.

A man who trusted too much.

And someone had used that kindness against him.

Elena walked toward the desk.

“But why frame me?””

Mrs. Sterling looked at her.

“Because Richard trusted you.””

Elena frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

Mrs. Sterling pointed toward the letter.

“Sebastian knew Richard left evidence.””

“And?””

“He didn’t know where.””

Elena slowly understood.

“So he thought Richard gave it to me.””

“Yes.””

Victoria looked at Elena.

“Because you were the last person with him.””

Elena nodded.

“And because nobody would believe a maid over a Sterling.””

The words were painful.

But true.

Julian looked angry.

“He used your position against you.””

“Yes.””

Elena’s voice became quiet.

“He knew everyone would question me.””

Victoria looked at her.

“For five years, you stayed here knowing someone wanted to destroy you.””

Elena nodded.

“I promised Richard.””

Julian looked at her.

“You could have left.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you?””

Elena met his eyes.

“Because he trusted me.””

The simplicity of the answer hurt.

She hadn’t stayed for money.

Or power.

Or recognition.

She stayed because she had made a promise to a dying man.

A silence settled over the room.

Then Victoria noticed something.

Something that didn’t fit.

“If Sebastian was behind everything…”

Everyone looked at her.

“Why would he send us that message tonight?””

Julian frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“He wanted us to find this.””

She pointed around the room.

“The letter. The video. The photograph.””

Elena’s expression changed.

Victoria continued.

“If he wanted to hide the truth, why would he push us toward it?””

Nobody answered.

Because she was right.

Julian walked back to the laptop.

“He wanted something.””

“What?””

“To control what we discovered.””

Elena looked confused.

“How?””

Julian replayed the video.

But this time, he watched carefully.

Not the conversation.

The background.

The room.

The details.

Then he froze.

“Wait.””

Everyone moved closer.

Julian paused the video.

Behind Richard’s desk was a small clock.

Victoria frowned.

“What about it?””

“It wasn’t there before.””

Elena looked at the screen.

“What?””

Julian pointed.

“My father hated that clock.””

Mrs. Sterling looked surprised.

“You remember?””

“He threw it away when I was a child.””

He zoomed in.

“But this recording shows it here.””

Victoria understood.

“Someone placed it there.””

Julian nodded.

“After the recording.””

Elena stepped closer.

“Why?””

Julian stared at the clock.

“Because it’s not a clock.””

He stood.

The room went silent.

He returned to the study wall.

The same wall where the hidden box had been found.

Then he looked at the old clock hanging above the fireplace.

Victoria followed him.

“You think there’s something inside?””

Julian reached behind it.

After a few seconds, he felt something.

A hidden switch.

The clock opened.

Inside was another small compartment.

But unlike the first one…

This one was empty.

Except for one thing.

A torn piece of paper.

Julian pulled it out.

The paper was old.

The writing was Richard’s.

He read it silently.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

He handed it to Elena.

She read it.

And immediately covered her mouth.

Victoria took it next.

Only one sentence was written.

*“If Sebastian finds the first evidence, he will believe he has won. But the real proof is with the person he never considered a threat.””*

Victoria looked up.

“Who?””

Nobody knew.

Then Julian noticed something else.

A small signature at the bottom.

Not Richard’s.

Someone else’s.

A name.

A name that made Elena step backward.

Because she recognized it.

“Impossible.””

Julian looked at her.

“What?””

Her voice shook.

“That person died six years ago.””

Victoria looked at the paper.

The name was written clearly.

*Daniel Ashford.*

Her father.

The room went completely silent.

Victoria stared.

“My father?””

Julian looked at her.

“Your father had the real evidence?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her breathing became unsteady.

“My father died before Richard.””

Elena looked at her.

“Then why would Richard say he had it?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was terrifying.

If Daniel Ashford had carried the evidence…

And if Richard knew…

Then the two deaths were connected.

Julian’s phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

Another unknown number.

He answered.

This time, a woman spoke.

A voice Victoria recognized.

Her blood turned cold.

Because it was the voice she had not heard in seven years.

Her mother.

“Victoria.””

She stopped breathing.

“Don’t trust Julian.””

Victoria grabbed the phone.

“Mom?””

The voice continued.

“I tried to keep you away from this.””

Victoria’s hands trembled.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Somewhere Sebastian can’t reach me.””

Victoria looked at everyone.

Then her mother said the words that shattered everything.

“Your father didn’t die investigating the Sterling family.””

A long silence.

“He died because he discovered what our family did to them.””

The call ended.

And Victoria realized the truth was not about choosing between Julian and Elena.

May you like

It was about discovering whether the woman who gave her life…

Had been the person who destroyed it.
