Amused

Chapter 7: The Woman They All Misjudged

The phone slipped slightly in Julian’s hand.

Not because he believed the voice.

Not because he wanted to believe it.

But because for one terrifying second, doubt entered his mind.

And Victoria saw it.

She saw the hesitation.

The smallest flicker of uncertainty.

But after everything that had happened that night, even a second of doubt felt like a knife.

Her expression changed.

“Me?””

Nobody answered.

The silence was worse than an accusation.

Victoria slowly looked around the room.

At Julian.

At Elena.

At Mrs. Sterling.

Three people who had spent the night discovering hidden truths.

And now she was the next secret.

“Who was that?””

Julian lowered the phone.

“I don’t know.””

“But they said my name.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you looking at me like you’re trying to decide if it’s true?””

The question hit him.

Julian immediately looked away.

“I’m not.””

Victoria laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

“Julian.””

Her voice trembled.

“You spent five years loving a woman you never told me about.””

She looked at Elena.

“You hid an entire investigation from me.””

Then back at him.

“And now, after one anonymous phone call, I’m the person you’re questioning?””

Julian opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because he knew she was right.

Elena stepped forward.

“Victoria…”

But Victoria raised her hand.

“No.””

She looked at her.

“I’m tired of everyone protecting me by hiding things from me.””

The words were quiet.

But they carried more weight than shouting.

Mrs. Sterling watched her carefully.

Then she spoke.

“She’s right.””

Everyone turned.

The older woman looked at Julian.

“You cannot demand honesty from others while refusing to give it yourself.””

Julian’s jaw tightened.

His mother’s words hurt because they were true.

Victoria looked surprised.

Mrs. Sterling continued.

“Richard made that mistake too.””

Julian frowned.

“What?””

“He believed protecting people meant keeping them away from the truth.””

She looked toward the staircase.

“That is how secrets grow.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Victoria took a slow breath.

“Tell me everything.””

Julian looked at her.

“What?””

“No more half-truths.””

Her eyes were firm.

“No more deciding what I can handle.””

A long silence followed.

Finally, Julian nodded.

“Okay.””

They returned to the study.

The room where everything had started.

Julian placed the laptop on the desk again.

The recording.

The documents.

The hidden notes.

Everything that had destroyed their perfect evening.

Victoria stood beside him.

Not behind him.

Not as his fiancée.

But as someone demanding the truth.

Julian opened the file again.

The video restarted.

Richard Sterling appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But still powerful.

He was sitting behind his desk.

Then Mrs. Sterling entered the room.

The younger version of her.

Five years earlier.

Their voices filled the study.

“Richard, you need to stop.””

Mrs. Sterling looked angry.

Afraid.

Richard leaned back.

“I can’t.””

“You don’t understand what you’re risking.””

“My son deserves to know.””

“No.””

Her voice became desperate.

“Julian deserves a father, not a war.””

Richard looked away.

Victoria watched carefully.

Because this wasn’t the conversation of two enemies.

It was a conversation between two people who loved each other.

Two people terrified of losing their family.

Then Richard said:

“You know who is behind this.””

Mrs. Sterling remained silent.

“I need you to tell him.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because if Julian knows, he will go after them.””

“And?””

“And they will destroy him.””

The video paused.

Julian stared.

“They were talking about Sebastian.””

Elena shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed at the screen.

“Listen.””

They replayed the final seconds.

Richard’s voice echoed.

“I need you to trust me.””

Mrs. Sterling replied:

“I do.””

“Then protect him.””

“I have been protecting him.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“Not from them.””

A pause.

“From her.””

The video ended.

Victoria felt cold.

“Her?””

Everyone looked at each other.

Who was Richard talking about?

Elena stepped closer.

“There is another possibility.””

Julian looked at her.

“What?””

“Maybe he wasn’t talking about your mother.””

Victoria frowned.

“Then who?””

Elena looked at the screen.

“The woman he believed would be blamed.””

The answer came slowly.

Not because she was unsure.

Because she was afraid.

“Me.””

Silence.

Julian looked at Elena.

“No.””

“But that’s what he wrote.””

She pointed toward the letter.

“He knew someone would make me look guilty.””

Victoria studied Elena.

“And someone did.””

She looked at the documents.

“The forged reports.””

“Yes.””

“Then why would someone frame you?””

Elena looked away.

“Because I knew something.””

“What?””

Elena hesitated.

Then she walked toward the desk.

She opened one of the folders.

Inside was a photograph.

Not the one they had seen earlier.

A different one.

A family photograph.

Richard.

Mrs. Sterling.

Julian as a child.

And a young Elena standing beside them.

Victoria stared.

“Why are you in a family photo?””

Elena’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because Richard Sterling was not just my employer.””

Julian looked at her.

“Then what was he?””

She whispered:

“My father’s closest friend.””

The answer surprised everyone.

“My father died when I was young. Richard promised him he would protect me.””

Victoria looked at the picture.

“He raised you?””

“Not exactly.””

Elena smiled sadly.

“He gave me opportunities. He paid for my education. He made sure I could build my own life.””

Julian looked at her.

“And then you became a maid here.””

Elena nodded.

“Because after his death, I needed to stay close to the evidence.””

Victoria understood.

Elena hadn’t hidden because she wanted power.

She had hidden because she was searching.

For the truth.

Then Julian noticed something.

A small mark on the photograph.

He picked it up.

“What is this?””

Behind the photo was a handwritten note.

Elena looked confused.

“I’ve never seen that.””

Julian turned it over.

Only three words were written.

*“Trust Victoria Ashford.””*

Everyone froze.

Victoria stared.

“What?””

Julian looked at her.

His expression changed completely.

Because suddenly the phone call made no sense.

Richard Sterling himself had left a message telling them to trust her.

But why?

Why would a dead man know Victoria would be involved?

Why would he specifically write her name?

Elena stepped closer.

“There’s more.””

She pointed at the back of the photograph.

Below the three words was a date.

A date from seven years ago.

Victoria’s face lost color.

“That date…”

Julian looked at her.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“That was the day my father died.””

The room went silent.

Victoria looked at the photograph again.

“I never told anyone this.””

Julian waited.

“My father worked with Sterling Holdings.””

Everyone froze.

Mrs. Sterling whispered:

“What?””

Victoria looked at the floor.

“He was one of the accountants who investigated the missing money.””

Julian stared.

“Your father?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Victoria’s eyes filled with pain.

“Because I was told never to talk about it.””

“By who?””

She looked toward the old study.

Toward the documents.

Toward the secrets.

Then she whispered:

“By the person who raised me after my father died.””

Julian felt his chest tighten.

“Who?””

Victoria slowly lifted her eyes.

And the answer destroyed the last piece of certainty they had left.

“My mother.””

Nobody moved.

Because now the truth was bigger than the Sterling family.

Bigger than Elena.

Bigger than Julian’s father.

Two families.

Two deaths.

Two hidden histories.

And one connection nobody had seen coming.

Then Elena noticed something on the photograph.

A tiny reflection in the corner.

A person standing behind Richard and Victoria’s father.

Someone who had been there the entire time.

She grabbed the photo.

“Julian.””

He looked.

“What?””

Elena pointed.

“That person.””

Victoria leaned closer.

Her breath stopped.

Because the person in the background was someone they all recognized.

Someone who had spent the entire night pretending to search for the truth.

Someone who had been controlling the story from the beginning.

Sebastian Sterling.

But beneath the photograph was another message.

May you like

A message Richard had hidden for years.

*“The betrayal began with him. But the reason was her.””*
