Amused

Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Uniform

Victoria stared at the paper lying on the marble floor.

For several seconds, she couldn’t move.

The ballroom around her had become a blur of expensive dresses, nervous whispers, and shocked faces. The music had stopped completely, leaving only the sound of people breathing and the faint crackle of candle flames.

She slowly bent down and picked up the document.

Her fingers trembled.

At the top of the page was a name.

*Elena Whitmore.*

Victoria frowned.

She knew that name.

Not because she had met anyone called Elena Whitmore.

Because she had seen it before.

Years ago.

In a newspaper article.

Her eyes moved lower.

A photograph was attached to the document.

It showed a young woman standing beside a man she recognized immediately.

Richard Sterling.

Julian’s father.

Victoria looked up sharply.

Her eyes found Elena across the room.

The maid who had always lowered her head.

The woman who served tea during family dinners.

The woman everyone ignored.

But the woman in the photograph looked different.

She wasn’t wearing a uniform.

She wasn’t standing quietly in the background.

She was smiling beside Richard Sterling like she belonged there.

Like she had a place in the Sterling family.

Victoria’s voice came out barely above a whisper.

“Who is she?””

Nobody answered.

That silence told her more than words could.

Julian walked forward.

“Victoria.””

She looked at him.

For the first time all night, she didn’t see the man she loved.

She saw a stranger.

“You knew.””

Julian remained silent.

“You knew who she was.””

“Victoria, listen—”

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“You don’t get to tell me to listen now.””

The guests watched nervously.

Some pretended not to stare.

Others didn’t even try.

The Sterling family’s perfect reputation was collapsing in front of hundreds of witnesses.

Victoria lifted the paper.

“Why is your father standing next to Elena?””

Julian glanced at the photograph.

His expression changed.

Pain.

Regret.

A memory he had spent years trying to bury.

Elena stepped forward.

“Julian, we should leave.””

Victoria looked at her.

“Leave?””

The word came out sharp.

“You’ve been standing in my house, wearing a maid’s uniform, while everyone believed you were nobody.””

Elena flinched.

“I never lied to you.””

Victoria laughed quietly.

“No?””

She looked around.

“You let me walk past you every day.””

Elena lowered her eyes.

“Because that was what I was asked to do.””

The answer shocked Victoria.

“What?””

Julian immediately looked at Elena.

“Elena.””

But she continued.

Her voice was calm, even though her hands were shaking.

“For five years, I stayed here because your father wanted me protected.””

The room became silent again.

Victoria turned toward Julian.

“Protected from what?””

Julian didn’t answer.

And that made her even more afraid.

She had spent months planning a wedding with this man.

She knew his favorite food.

She knew the way he took his coffee.

She knew he hated crowded places and always loosened his watch when he was stressed.

But she didn’t know this.

She didn’t know the woman he loved had been hidden inside his own home.

She didn’t know his father had a connection to her.

She didn’t know Julian had been carrying an entire secret life.

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“What happened five years ago?””

Julian looked away.

A small movement.

But Victoria noticed.

Because she had always noticed everything about him.

Except this.

Five years ago.

The same year Richard Sterling died.

The same year Julian became colder.

The same year Elena appeared at the mansion.

Victoria slowly turned toward Elena.

“You came here after his father died.””

Elena nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Elena looked at Julian.

A silent conversation passed between them.

Victoria saw it.

And it hurt more than anything else.

They had a language she didn’t understand.

Finally, Elena spoke.

“Because I promised him.””

“Promised who?””

“Richard Sterling.””

Victoria’s expression changed.

“His father?””

Elena nodded.

Richard Sterling’s name hung in the air.

Everyone in the Sterling family knew the official story.

He had died suddenly after a heart attack.

A tragedy.

A loss.

A chapter that ended.

But now Victoria realized there were missing pages.

Julian walked toward the center of the room.

“Five years ago, my father found out something that changed everything.””

Mrs. Sterling immediately interrupted.

“Julian, stop.””

Everyone turned.

His mother stood near the staircase, her face pale.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

Julian looked at her.

“Yes, I do.””

“No, you don’t.””

Her voice lowered.

“You think telling the truth will fix everything? It won’t.””

Victoria looked between them.

The fear on Mrs. Sterling’s face was unmistakable.

“What truth?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Julian said:

“The truth about why my father wanted Elena here.””

Mrs. Sterling closed her eyes.

“Julian.””

But he continued.

“After my father died, I found a letter.””

Elena looked down.

Victoria noticed.

She already knew about the letter.

Julian turned toward the guests.

“My father wrote that Elena was the only person he trusted with the information he left behind.””

A businessman near the front whispered:

“Information about what?””

Julian didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he walked toward a nearby table and picked up a glass of water.

His hand was steady.

His voice wasn’t.

“My father believed someone inside the family had betrayed him.””

A wave of shock moved through the ballroom.

Victoria stared.

“Betrayed him?””

Julian nodded.

“He believed someone had been stealing from Sterling Holdings.””

People started whispering louder.

The Sterling family had built its empire on trust.

Loyalty.

Legacy.

The idea that someone close had betrayed them was almost impossible to imagine.

Victoria looked at Elena.

“And she knows who?””

Elena’s face tightened.

“She knows what your father discovered.””

Julian corrected softly.

“She was there.””

Victoria froze.

“What?””

Elena looked like she wanted to disappear.

But Julian continued.

“On the night my father died, Elena was the last person who spoke to him.””

The entire ballroom went silent.

Victoria felt cold.

Because suddenly the story wasn’t about a maid.

It wasn’t about an engagement.

It was about a death.

A secret.

And a woman who had been hiding inside the Sterling mansion for five years.

She looked at Julian.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes met hers.

And for a moment, he looked genuinely sorry.

“Because I was afraid.””

Victoria almost laughed.

“Afraid of what?””

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“Afraid that if you knew everything, you would never look at me the same way again.””

The words hit harder than she expected.

Because they sounded honest.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Victoria looked at the ring still sitting in Julian’s hand.

Then at Elena.

Then back at Julian.

“You chose her because of this?””

Julian shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why?””

His answer came immediately.

“Because before I loved her, she was the only person who stood beside me when I had nothing.””

Elena looked away.

Victoria noticed something strange.

She expected Elena to look victorious.

She expected her to enjoy winning.

But she didn’t.

She looked heartbroken.

Like this moment wasn’t a victory.

Like it was something she had feared.

Victoria stepped closer.

“Why do you look scared?””

Elena didn’t answer.

“Why?””

The question echoed.

Finally, Elena whispered:

“Because Richard Sterling didn’t just leave behind a secret.””

Julian looked at her.

“Elena…”

She swallowed.

“He left behind a warning.””

Victoria felt a chill.

“A warning about what?””

Elena’s eyes moved across the room.

Past Julian.

Past Victoria.

Toward the Sterling family members standing silently together.

Then she said:

“He told me that if the truth ever came out…”

She stopped.

The lights above them flickered.

Everyone looked up.

For one strange second, the entire ballroom went dark.

A scream came from somewhere near the entrance.

When the emergency lights turned on, everyone looked around in confusion.

And then Victoria saw it.

A new document placed on the table beside Julian.

A document nobody had seen before.

On the first page was a handwritten message.

Julian picked it up.

His face changed instantly.

Victoria stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Julian didn’t answer.

Because the handwriting belonged to his father.

May you like

And the first line read:

*“Julian, if Elena is standing beside you when you read this, it means the person who killed me is still inside this house.””*
