Amused

Chapter 6: The Mother’s Hidden Truth

The video stopped.

The screen went black.

But nobody in the room moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the last voice they had heard belonged to the one person Julian had spent his entire life believing would never betray him.

His mother.

The silence was unbearable.

Victoria looked at Julian.

She expected anger.

She expected disbelief.

She expected him to immediately deny what they had just heard.

But Julian did nothing.

He simply stared at the dark screen.

Like his entire world had shifted beneath his feet.

“Julian…”

Elena’s voice was soft.

He didn’t respond.

His mother.

The woman who had held his hand when he was a child.

The woman who had stood beside him at his father’s funeral.

The woman who had told him his father’s death was a tragedy nobody could have prevented.

Was on a recording with Richard.

Arguing with him.

The same night he died.

Victoria slowly stepped closer.

“Maybe there’s another explanation.””

Everyone looked at her.

Even Julian.

She swallowed.

“I’m not defending her.””

Her eyes moved toward the computer.

“I’m saying we don’t know what happened after that moment.””

Julian looked at the video file.

“You’re right.””

His voice was empty.

“We don’t.””

Elena looked at him carefully.

“Julian.””

He closed the laptop.

“We need to find out.””

The three of them left the study.

The hallway felt different now.

The mansion that had once represented elegance and security suddenly felt like a maze filled with hidden doors.

Secrets were everywhere.

And every person inside those walls had something they had never said.

When they returned to the ballroom, Mrs. Sterling was still there.

Waiting.

Almost as if she knew they would come back.

Her expression changed when she saw their faces.

“What did you find?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Julian walked toward her.

For the first time in his life, he looked at his mother like he was trying to understand a stranger.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Mrs. Sterling’s face remained still.

“Tell you what?””

“That you were with Father the night he died.””

The question landed heavily.

Her eyes moved toward Elena.

Then toward Victoria.

Then back to Julian.

“I was his wife.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Mrs. Sterling sighed.

“You went into his study.””

“Yes.””

“And you found his recordings.””

Julian froze.

“You knew about them?””

The smallest hesitation.

A second.

But enough.

Victoria saw it.

Elena saw it.

Julian definitely saw it.

“You knew,” he repeated.

Mrs. Sterling sat down slowly.

“I knew your father was keeping records.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard trusted nobody.””

Julian laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“Except Elena.””

Mrs. Sterling’s expression tightened.

“Yes.””

That answer surprised him.

She didn’t deny it.

She didn’t attack Elena.

She simply admitted it.

Victoria watched carefully.

“Why?””

Mrs. Sterling looked at Elena.

“Because Richard knew she was honest.””

Elena looked confused.

“You always hated me.””

Mrs. Sterling shook her head.

“No.””

The answer shocked everyone.

“I hated what your presence represented.””

Julian frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Mrs. Sterling looked down.

“Your father had a habit of saving people.””

Nobody spoke.

“He found Elena when she was young. Her family had lost everything. He gave her work.

Education. A place to live.””

Elena lowered her eyes.

“But he also made a mistake.””

Julian looked at his mother.

“What mistake?””

Mrs. Sterling’s voice became quiet.

“He cared too much.””

Victoria felt the tension change.

This was no longer a simple story about betrayal.

It was about years of pain.

Years of decisions made by people who believed they were protecting someone.

Julian stepped closer.

“Why were you arguing with him?””

Mrs. Sterling looked at him.

“Because I found out the truth.””

“About what?””

“About the company.””

Julian waited.

She continued.

“Your father discovered money was being moved through accounts controlled by someone close to the family.””

“Sebastian?””

She didn’t answer.

But she didn’t need to.

Julian looked away.

“So you knew.””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

Mrs. Sterling’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because I was afraid.””

The words surprised him.

“You?””

“Yes.””

She looked toward the old mansion walls.

“People think power means you cannot lose anything.””

She shook her head.

“They are wrong.””

Julian’s expression softened slightly.

“What were you afraid of?””

Mrs. Sterling looked at Elena.

“After Richard died, I received a message.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“What message?””

Mrs. Sterling hesitated.

Then she said:

“Leave the past alone, or Julian will suffer the same fate as his father.””

The room became silent.

Julian’s face changed.

“You never told me because you were protecting me.””

“Yes.””

“You lied to me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more.

Victoria watched Julian struggle.

Because this was not the simple betrayal he had expected.

His mother had lied.

But perhaps she had lied because she was afraid.

Elena quietly spoke.

“Richard knew.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

Elena looked at Mrs. Sterling.

“He knew you were scared.””

Mrs. Sterling stared at her.

“You knew?””

Elena nodded.

“Your husband told me.””

Julian looked between them.

“How many conversations did you two have that I never knew about?””

Neither answered.

And that answer hurt.

Julian walked away.

Victoria followed him into the empty hallway.

For a moment, they stood there in silence.

The woman he had almost married.

The man who had broken her heart.

Two people who had both discovered they were surrounded by secrets.

“You loved her for five years.””

Julian looked at her.

Victoria looked down.

“I keep thinking that should be the thing that hurts the most.””

He didn’t speak.

“But it isn’t.””

“What is?””

She looked at him.

“That I knew everything about your life except the things that mattered.””

The words struck him.

Because they were true.

Julian lowered his eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

Victoria gave a small, sad smile.

“You always say that when you can’t fix something.””

“I wish I could.””

“I know.””

For a moment, they were not enemies.

Not a broken engagement.

Not two people on opposite sides.

Just two people standing in the ruins of something they thought was real.

Then Elena rushed into the hallway.

“Julian.””

He turned immediately.

“What happened?””

She held a piece of paper.

“I found this in the study.””

He took it.

Victoria moved closer.

It was another note.

But this one wasn’t from Richard.

It was recent.

The ink was fresh.

Julian read it.

His face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to Victoria.

Her eyes moved across the words.

*“You’re looking for the wrong traitor.””*

Below it was another sentence.

*“Richard Sterling knew the truth. But he never discovered who was protecting the person who betrayed him.””*

Victoria looked up.

“Protecting?””

Elena’s face went pale.

Because she understood something before anyone else.

“Julian…”

“What?””

She pointed at the note.

“The person who betrayed Richard wasn’t alone.””

A cold silence fell.

Victoria looked at the hallway.

At the mansion.

At the people inside it.

Because now they weren’t searching for one enemy.

They were searching for a partnership.

Two people.

One who committed the betrayal.

And one who had protected them for five years.

Then Julian’s phone rang.

The screen showed an unknown number.

He answered.

No one spoke at first.

Only breathing.

Then a voice whispered:

“Julian Sterling.””

His face turned pale.

Because the voice belonged to someone who should have been dead.

“Your father was right.””

A pause.

“And if you want to know who killed him…”

The voice lowered.

“Ask the woman who has been standing beside you all night.””

The call ended.

Everyone looked around.

Victoria.

Elena.

Mrs. Sterling.

And then Julian realized something terrifying.

May you like

The person on the phone wasn’t talking about his mother.

They were talking about Victoria.
