Chapter 9: The Letter Vanessa Tried to Hide
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Vanessa stood in the doorway holding the envelope like she was holding a weapon.
Maybe, to her, she was.
Because she knew exactly what was inside.
She knew what those words could do.
The strange thing was that she didn’t look angry.
She looked confident.
That scared me more.
“Give me the letter,” I said.
Vanessa tilted her head.
“You don’t even want to know what it says?””
“I want you to give it to me.””
A small smile crossed her face.
“You’re still protecting her.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
“Emma.””
The way she said my wife’s name made my skin crawl.
“You spent three years believing she was perfect.””
“She wasn’t perfect.””
I stepped closer.
“She was human.””
Vanessa’s expression tightened.
“And humans make mistakes.””
“Yes.””
“Even Emma.””
I stared at her.
“You’re trying to make me doubt her because you got caught.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I’m trying to show you that the person you worship wasn’t honest with you.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Daniel, don’t listen to her.””
Vanessa laughed softly.
“That’s exactly what Emma wanted.””
Claire’s face changed.
“Stop.””
“No.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You’ve spent years protecting her secrets.””
Then she looked back at me.
“But now you deserve the truth.””
I reached out my hand.
“The letter.””
She held it tighter.
“Promise me something.””
I almost laughed.
“After everything you did, you think you get to ask me for promises?””
Her expression hardened.
“You’ll read the whole thing.””
I said nothing.
“You won’t stop halfway because you’re angry.””
I looked at the envelope.
Then at Lily standing outside with Michael through the open doorway.
My daughter was watching.
Waiting.
I made my decision.
“Give it to me.””
Vanessa walked forward slowly.
She placed the envelope in my hand.
Her fingers touched mine for just a second.
A deliberate move.
A reminder.
Like she wanted me to remember that she had been close to my life.
Too close.
Then she stepped back.
“Read it.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
Emma’s handwriting.
But unlike the previous letter, this one was shorter.
My heart pounded as I began.
*Daniel,*
*If you are reading this, then I was not able to tell you myself. I am sorry.*
I stopped.
The room became blurry.
I continued.
*There is something about Lily’s birth that I need you to know. Something I was afraid to say because I knew it would hurt you.*
My fingers tightened around the paper.
*The clinic made a mistake. But the mistake was not the only thing that happened.*
I looked up.
Vanessa was watching me.
I kept reading.
*Before Lily was born, I discovered that Vanessa had been trying to contact the clinic repeatedly. She wanted information about the donor records. She wanted to know if the child had survived.*
My stomach twisted.
*When she learned Lily was alive, she believed she had a claim over her.*
I looked at Vanessa.
Her expression had changed.
Not fear.
Anger.
I continued.
*But the thing I never told Daniel is that Vanessa’s obsession did not begin after Lily was born. It began before.*
My breathing stopped.
Before?
*Vanessa was jealous of our family long before she knew Lily existed.*
Claire looked down.
She already knew.
*She became close to me because she wanted what I had.*
I swallowed.
*A husband who loved me. A child who needed me. A family.*
The words felt heavy.
Because they explained everything.
Vanessa didn’t want my life because of Lily.
She wanted my life because it was mine.
I turned the page.
There was only one more paragraph.
*Daniel, if Vanessa ever tells you that I hid Lily’s truth from you because I didn’t trust you, remember this: I was not afraid of you. I was afraid of what Vanessa would do if she knew you chose us over her.*
I stopped.
My eyes lifted.
Vanessa’s face had gone pale.
I lowered the paper.
“You knew.””
She said nothing.
“You knew Emma wrote this.””
Silence.
“Why?””
Her jaw tightened.
Then she answered.
“Because she gave it to me.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at the letter.
“Emma gave me that letter.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa’s voice became sharper.
“She knew she was dying.””
I stared at her.
“What are you saying?””
“She asked me to leave you alone.””
The room went silent.
“Why would she do that?””
Vanessa smiled sadly.
“Because she knew I loved her family.””
I felt anger rise.
“You don’t love something you try to destroy.””
Her face hardened.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“I understand perfectly.””
She looked toward Lily.
“I only wanted what should have been mine.””
My voice dropped.
“She was never yours.””
Vanessa flinched.
For the first time, those words actually hurt her.
Then she looked at Claire.
“She told him, didn’t she?””
Claire didn’t answer.
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“Of course she did.””
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa looked back at me.
“Ask Claire what happened the night Emma died.””
The room changed.
Again.
Always another secret.
Always another hidden piece.
I looked at Claire.
She closed her eyes.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice was firm.
“I’m done being the last person to know.””
Claire took a shaky breath.
“Emma’s illness became worse quickly.””
“I know.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You know what the doctors told you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Claire looked at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
“Emma did not die because her illness suddenly took over.””
Silence.
“What?””
“She had complications.””
“What kind?””
Claire hesitated.
“Complications caused by stress.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She immediately shook her head.
“Don’t.””
“By stress?””
Claire nodded.
“After Vanessa started appearing in her life, Emma’s condition declined faster.””
My hands shook.
“You’re saying Vanessa caused it?””
Claire quickly answered.
“No.””
She looked at me seriously.
“I’m saying Vanessa’s actions affected Emma.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That’s ridiculous.””
“Is it?””
Claire’s voice became stronger.
“You threatened her.””
“I talked to her.””
“You followed her.””
“I cared about Lily.””
“You frightened her.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You have no proof.””
The sentence hung there.
No proof.
But then Lily appeared in the doorway.
Her small voice cut through the room.
“I have proof.””
Everyone turned.
My heart dropped.
“Lily?””
Michael looked shocked.
“I thought she was with me.””
Lily stepped inside slowly.
In her hand was the old phone.
The cracked one.
The one that started everything.
Vanessa’s face changed immediately.
“No.””
Lily stopped.
I moved toward her.
“It’s okay.””
She looked at me.
“I found another video.””
Vanessa went pale.
“Lily, give me that.””
I stepped between them.
“Don’t move.””
Lily pressed the screen.
The video started.
This time, the image was darker.
Older.
The room looked unfamiliar.
Then I saw Emma.
My heart stopped.
She was sitting in a hospital room.
Weak.
Tired.
But alive.
And across from her…
Was Vanessa.
Emma spoke first.
“Please leave my family alone.””
Vanessa’s voice answered.
“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””
My blood turned cold.
Emma looked frightened.
Not angry.
Frightened.
Then Vanessa said the words that made the entire room silent.
“You know the truth about Lily.””
Emma whispered:
“She is my daughter.””
Vanessa leaned closer.
“No.””
A pause.
“She is my second chance.””
The video shook.
Then Emma said:
“If anything happens to me, Daniel needs to know.””
Vanessa’s voice became cold.
“Then I guess you better hope he believes you.””
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Vanessa stared at the phone.
At Lily.
At me.
And for the first time, she looked exactly like what she was.
Not a bride.
Not a mother.
Not part of my family.
A person who had spent years trying to steal something she could never own.
I turned to her.
“Get out.””
Her eyes widened.
“Daniel.””
“Get out of my life.””
She opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
Because she finally understood.
The one thing she had feared most had happened.
I chose Lily.
But as Vanessa walked toward the door, she stopped.
She looked back.
And whispered:
“You think this is over?””
I said nothing.
She smiled faintly.
“Emma left one final secret.””
My heart sank.
“What secret?””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“The reason she never told you the truth about Lily…”
May you like
She paused.
“Is because she was protecting you from knowing who Lily’s real biological father is.””
