Amused

Chapter 5: The Secret Behind Lily’s Birth

I read the message again.

Then again.

Each time, the words felt less real.

*Your wife wasn’t afraid of Vanessa because of what she had done.*

*She was afraid because Vanessa knew the truth about Lily’s birth.*

I stared at the screen until the letters blurred.

The garden around me disappeared.

The wedding guests disappeared.

Even the sound of people moving inside the venue faded away.

There was only one thought in my head.

What truth?

Lily was my daughter.

I had never questioned that.

Not once.

From the day she was born, I had been there.

I remembered holding her for the first time.

Her tiny fingers wrapped around mine.

Emma crying beside me.

The three of us in that hospital room.

A family.

A real family.

So why would Vanessa know something about Lily’s birth that I didn’t?

I looked up.

Michael was standing beside Lily, watching me carefully.

“Daniel?””

I locked my phone.

“What?””

“You look like you just saw a ghost.””

Maybe I had.

Because the ghost wasn’t Emma.

It was the possibility that my entire life had been built on something I didn’t know.

Lily noticed my expression.

“Daddy?””

I immediately softened.

“Hey.””

She stepped closer.

“Is Mommy in trouble?””

The question broke my heart.

“No, sweetheart.””

“But Vanessa said…”

I knelt down.

“Listen to me. None of this is your fault.””

She nodded.

“But are you angry?””

I looked at my daughter.

At Emma’s eyes.

Emma’s smile.

The child we created together.

“I’m trying to understand.””

That was the truth.

I wasn’t ready to be angry.

Not yet.

Because anger required knowing what happened.

Right now, I only had questions.

Michael glanced at the phone in my hand.

“What did Claire send you?””

I hesitated.

He had been my best friend since college.

He had stood beside me when Emma died.

He had helped me survive those first impossible months.

If anyone deserved the truth, it was him.

I showed him the picture.

His face changed.

“Wait.””

“You know them?””

“No.””

He zoomed in.

“Actually…”

He stopped.

“What?””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“I’ve seen this photo before.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where?””

He looked at Lily.

Then lowered his voice.

“Not here.””

We moved farther away.

“What are you talking about?””

Michael rubbed his forehead.

“After Emma died, when I helped you clean out the house…”

I nodded.

“I remember.””

“There was a box in the attic.””

I frowned.

“What box?””

“A box of Emma’s things.””

I felt a strange pressure in my chest.

“I went through those.””

“Not all of it.””

“What do you mean?””

Michael looked at the picture again.

“There was a folder hidden underneath some old clothes.””

I stared at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t open it.””

“Why?””

“Because it had Emma’s name on it.””

I looked away.

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Where is it now?””

Michael was quiet.

“Daniel…”

“Where is it?””

His silence answered before his words did.

“I gave it to you.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“No, you didn’t.””

“Yes, I did.””

“When?””

“A few days after the funeral.””

I shook my head.

“I would remember.””

Michael looked at me sadly.

“You wouldn’t.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“What does that mean?””

“You were barely functioning.””

The memory came back in pieces.

The endless nights.

The medication.

The days when I forgot whether I had eaten.

The mornings when I woke up and for a few seconds forgot Emma was gone.

Michael continued.

“You opened it.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“You opened the folder.””

“No.””

“You did.””

He looked at me.

“You read something inside.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t remember.””

And that scared me more than anything.

Because there were pieces of that time missing.

Pieces I had buried because they hurt too much.

Michael spoke quietly.

“You started crying.””

My throat tightened.

“What did I say?””

He looked away.

“You said Emma was protecting Lily.””

I froze.

Protecting Lily.

Not protecting me.

Not protecting herself.

Lily.

“What else?””

“I don’t know.””

“You have to know.””

Michael sighed.

“Daniel, you threw everything into the fireplace.””

My breath stopped.

“What?””

“The folder.””

A memory flashed.

A fire.

A winter night.

My hands shaking.

Emma’s handwriting.

A feeling of betrayal.

Then nothing.

I covered my face.

I had forgotten.

I had forgotten something about my own wife.

My own daughter.

“Why didn’t you remind me?””

Michael’s voice softened.

“Because you told me never to mention it again.””

I looked at him.

“I did?””

He nodded.

“You said if Emma wanted you to know, she would have told you herself.””

The words hurt.

Because that sounded like me.

The man I was after losing her.

A man too broken to chase answers.

A man who chose pain over truth.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

Claire.

*“Daniel, I know you’re confused. Please meet me before Vanessa finds out I contacted you.””*

Then another.

*“Bring Lily’s birth certificate.””*

My heart stopped.

Why would she need that?

I immediately typed back.

*Why?*

The reply came quickly.

*Because the name on that certificate is not the name you think it is.*

I stared at the screen.

No.

Impossible.

I looked at Lily.

She was picking up small white petals from the ground.

Completely unaware that adults were tearing apart the foundation of her world.

I walked over to her.

“Sweetheart.””

She looked up.

“Yes?””

“Do you remember when you were born?””

She smiled slightly.

“Mommy said I was really loud.””

A small laugh escaped me.

“She did say that.””

“She said I cried so much the nurses laughed.””

My eyes burned.

Emma.

Even now.

Still everywhere.

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“Why are you sad?””

I forced a smile.

“Because I love you.””

She tilted her head.

“That’s not a sad thing.””

I smiled.

“No.””

I brushed her hair back.

“It’s the most important thing.””

A car horn sounded from the front entrance.

Everyone turned.

A woman stepped out.

Late forties.

Dark hair.

Holding a folder against her chest.

I knew immediately.

Claire.

She looked at me.

Then at Lily.

Then her expression broke.

Not fear.

Not surprise.

Pain.

She walked toward us slowly.

“Daniel.””

I stood.

“Claire?””

She nodded.

“I’m sorry it took me this long.””

I looked at the folder in her hands.

“What is that?””

She held it tighter.

“Everything Emma wanted you to know.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“About Vanessa?””

Claire looked toward the building.

Toward the bridal suite.

Then back at me.

“About Vanessa.””

A pause.

“And about Lily.””

My daughter moved closer to me.

Claire noticed.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Oh my God.””

“What?””

She looked at Lily.

“She really has Emma’s eyes.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Claire, tell me what’s going on.””

She took a deep breath.

Then opened the folder.

The first page was an old medical document.

At the top was Lily’s name.

Underneath it was a line I had never seen before.

My hands went cold.

Because beneath my daughter’s name was another name.

Not mine.

Not Emma’s.

Someone else’s.

Claire looked at me.

“I’m sorry, Daniel.””

I couldn’t speak.

“Emma tried to tell you.””

I stared at the document.

“Tell me what?””

Claire’s voice dropped.

“The reason Vanessa came into your life was never because she loved you.””

My fingers trembled.

“Then why?””

May you like

Claire looked at Lily.

“Because she believed Lily belonged to her.””
