Amused

Chapter 7: The Woman Who Thought She Owned My Daughter

The message on my phone stayed there.

A single sentence.

*“Bring my daughter back, or you’ll lose everything.””*

I read it once.

Then again.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

Not because I was afraid of Vanessa.

Because of the word she used.

My daughter.

I looked at Lily.

She was standing beside me, holding my hand, completely unaware of the war happening around her.

Vanessa had never seen Lily as a child.

Not truly.

She saw her as something to claim.

Something to take.

Something that belonged to her.

Claire reached for my arm.

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

“How did she get this picture?””

Claire’s expression was tense.

“I don’t know.””

“She’s watching us.””

“Maybe.””

“No.””

I looked back toward the venue.

“She’s been watching us for a long time.””

The realization felt heavier than anger.

Because it meant this wasn’t a sudden mistake.

It wasn’t a moment of jealousy.

It was planned.

Every smile.

Every gift.

Every time Vanessa told me she wanted to be part of our family.

A performance.

I turned to Claire.

“Tell me everything.””

She nodded slowly.

“Not here.””

Again.

Those words.

Not here.

Everyone had something to hide.

Everyone except my daughter.

I looked at Lily.

“Sweetheart, I need you to stay with Uncle Michael for a little longer.””

Her face immediately changed.

“Are you going back to her?””

The question cut deeper than any accusation.

“No.””

I knelt down.

“I’m going to make sure she can never hurt you again.””

Lily studied my face.

“Promise?””

I took her hands.

“I promise.””

She nodded.

But before she walked away, she stopped.

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“Don’t believe her.””

I froze.

“What?””

Lily looked toward the building.

“Vanessa is good at making people believe things.””

A seven-year-old child shouldn’t have known that.

A seven-year-old child shouldn’t have understood manipulation.

But she did.

Because she had lived through it.

Michael took Lily’s hand.

“I’ll keep her safe.””

I nodded.

Then Claire and I walked toward a quiet side room near the back of the venue.

The room was empty.

A table.

Two chairs.

A window overlooking the parking lot.

I closed the door.

“Start talking.””

Claire placed the folder on the table.

“Emma found out about the donor mistake when Lily was almost two years old.””

I sat down slowly.

“Almost two?””

Claire nodded.

“She didn’t tell you immediately because she was trying to understand what happened.””

I looked down.

“Why?””

“Because she didn’t care about biology.””

My eyes burned.

“That sounds like Emma.””

Claire smiled sadly.

“It was.””

She opened another document.

“She told me, ‘Daniel is Lily’s father because he chose her every day.’”

I looked away.

Because that sounded exactly like my wife.

She always believed love was a choice.

Not just a feeling.

Not just blood.

“So why was she afraid?””

Claire took a breath.

“Because Vanessa found out too.””

My jaw tightened.

“How?””

“The clinic contacted Vanessa after discovering the mistake.””

“Why would they contact her?””

“Because she was the donor.””

“And then?””

Claire’s expression darkened.

“Vanessa contacted Emma.””

I already knew I wouldn’t like the answer.

“What did she want?””

“At first?””

Claire paused.

“To meet Lily.””

My stomach twisted.

“And Emma said no.””

“Yes.””

“Good.””

Claire looked at me.

“Daniel, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Vanessa didn’t become angry because Emma refused.””

I waited.

“She became angry because Emma told her something.””

“What?””

Claire looked directly at me.

“She told Vanessa that being biologically connected to Lily didn’t make her Lily’s mother.””

Silence.

I closed my eyes.

I could almost hear Emma saying it.

Calmly.

Firmly.

The way she defended everything she loved.

“And Vanessa couldn’t accept that.””

“No.””

“What happened next?””

Claire looked at the floor.

“Vanessa started showing up.””

My hands tightened.

“Where?””

“At places Emma went.””

My heart dropped.

“She followed her?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t Emma tell me?””

“Because she thought you would confront Vanessa.””

“I would have.””

“I know.””

Claire’s voice softened.

“And Emma was afraid of what would happen if Vanessa felt cornered.””

A memory came back.

Emma asking me once:

“Daniel, if someone loved something too much, could they become dangerous?””

I had laughed.

I told her people weren’t like that.

I told her she worried too much.

I hated myself for remembering that now.

“What else did Vanessa do?””

Claire hesitated.

“She tried to convince Emma that Lily needed her.””

I stared.

“She said she was Lily’s biological mother.””

“Yes.””

“And Emma?””

“She refused.””

I nodded.

“She protected Lily.””

Claire looked at me.

“She protected you too.””

“What does that mean?””

Claire pushed the envelope toward me.

“The letter.””

My name was written across it.

Emma’s handwriting.

Three years old.

I couldn’t touch it.

Not yet.

“Why did you keep it?””

“Because Emma asked me to.””

“Why didn’t you give it to me after?””

Claire looked away.

“Because she asked me not to.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She told me if Vanessa appeared in your life, I should wait.””

“Wait for what?””

“For you to see Vanessa clearly.””

The room felt colder.

“Emma knew?””

“She knew Vanessa was patient.””

Claire looked at the letter.

“She knew Vanessa wouldn’t attack immediately.””

My throat tightened.

“She knew Vanessa would wait.””

“Yes.””

“And she was right.””

Claire nodded.

“She was.””

I picked up the envelope.

My fingers shook.

“What’s inside?””

“Everything Emma wanted to tell you.””

I opened it.

Slowly.

The paper inside was folded carefully.

I recognized Emma’s handwriting immediately.

My chest tightened.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I stared at the screen.

Claire looked worried.

“Don’t answer.””

But I already knew who it was.

I pressed the button.

“Hello?””

Vanessa’s voice came through.

Calm.

Almost gentle.

“Daniel.””

I said nothing.

“You’re listening to Claire.””

It wasn’t a question.

“How?””

A small laugh.

“You still don’t understand me.””

My blood ran cold.

“You had someone follow us?””

“No.””

“Then how do you know?””

“Because you always do the same thing.””

“What?””

“You look for answers from people who hate me.””

I gripped the phone.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Near the ceremony hall.””

My body went still.

“Vanessa.””

“I just wanted to talk.””

“You lost that chance.””

“No.””

Her voice changed.

Not angry.

Desperate.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“You hurt Lily.””

“I was trying to protect her.””

“From what?””

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“From the truth.””

I looked at Claire.

She heard.

“Daniel,” Vanessa continued, “you think I’m the villain because Lily showed you a few videos.””

My jaw tightened.

“You are.””

“No.””

Her voice became sharper.

“Because you don’t know what Emma did.””

I felt anger rise.

“Don’t talk about my wife.””

“She lied to you.””

“No.””

“She kept Lily’s real identity from you.””

I froze.

Claire immediately looked at me.

Vanessa continued.

“She knew Lily was connected to me.””

“She knew you would never accept it.””

“That’s why she hid it.””

My heart pounded.

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

A pause.

Then Vanessa said:

“Ask Claire about the night Lily was born.””

The line went quiet.

I stared at Claire.

Her face had changed.

She looked terrified.

Not because Vanessa was lying.

Because Vanessa had just opened a door she didn’t want opened.

I slowly lowered the phone.

“Claire.””

She didn’t answer.

“Tell me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me what happened the night Lily was born.””

Claire looked at the envelope in my hand.

Then at me.

And whispered:

“Emma wasn’t the only woman in that hospital room.””

My heartbeat stopped.

“Who else was there?””

May you like

Claire closed her eyes.

“Vanessa.””
