Chapter 4: The Woman My Wife Was Afraid Of
“The woman you’re about to marry was the last person Emma was afraid of.””
The words stayed in my mind long after the call ended.
I stood frozen in the garden, the phone still pressed against my ear even though the line had already gone silent.
My daughter looked up at me.
“Daddy?””
I forced myself to blink.
“Yeah, sweetheart?””
“Who was that?””
I looked at Lily.
Seven years old.
Still wearing the white dress she had been excited to wear.
Still holding the small flower basket she was supposed to carry toward the woman who had just tried to erase her mother.
I sat beside her.
“It was someone who knew Mommy.””
Her eyes widened.
“Really?””
I nodded slowly.
“Someone who might know things I should have known a long time ago.””
Lily looked nervous.
“Are you mad at Mommy?””
The question hit me harder than anything else.
“No.””
I held her hand.
“Never.””
“Because Vanessa said…”
She stopped.
I turned toward her.
“What did Vanessa say?””
Lily looked away.
“She said if I kept talking about Mommy, you would start missing her more.””
My heart sank.
“And?””
“She said missing Mommy meant you could never really love someone new.””
I stared at the ground.
Because that was the cruelest part.
Vanessa hadn’t just attacked my daughter.
She had used the grief we carried.
She had taken the most painful part of our lives and turned it into a weapon.
I stood.
“Come on.””
“Where are we going?””
“Somewhere safe.””
The words left my mouth before I realized how much they meant.
Safe.
A word I thought I had already provided.
A word I now realized my daughter had been searching for.
When we returned inside the venue, the wedding coordinator immediately approached us.
“Daniel, everyone is wondering what’s happening. The ceremony was supposed to begin five minutes ago.””
I looked past her.
Through the glass doors, I could see rows of guests.
Friends.
Family.
People who had come to celebrate a future that no longer existed.
“Cancel it.””
The coordinator blinked.
“I’m sorry?””
“The wedding is canceled.””
Her face changed.
Not because she was shocked.
Because she suddenly understood something serious had happened.
“Is Vanessa okay?””
I almost laughed.
The question felt impossible.
Was Vanessa okay?
She had hurt my daughter.
She had lied to me.
She had manipulated everyone around us.
But she was still the person everyone worried about.
“I don’t know,” I said.
And for the first time in years, I meant it.
Michael came through the doorway.
His expression was grim.
“She’s in the bridal suite.””
“Alone?””
He nodded.
“Her parents arrived. They’re asking questions.””
I looked at Lily.
“I need you to stay with Uncle Michael for a few minutes.””
Her hand immediately tightened around mine.
“No.””
I softened my voice.
“Sweetheart.””
“Don’t leave me.””
Those three words broke something inside me.
Because they weren’t about today.
They weren’t about the room.
They were about every moment she had been afraid and thought she had no one.
I crouched down.
“I’m not leaving you.””
She searched my face.
“Promise?””
I nodded.
“I promise.””
Only then did she let go.
Michael placed a hand on my shoulder.
“I’ve got her.””
I nodded.
Then I walked back toward the bridal suite.
Every step felt heavier.
The woman waiting inside was someone I had loved.
Someone I had planned a life with.
But I needed answers.
Not excuses.
When I opened the door, Vanessa was standing by the window.
Her wedding dress looked perfect.
Her makeup was flawless.
If someone took a picture of that moment, they would have seen a beautiful bride.
They would have never guessed what was hidden underneath.
Her parents stood nearby.
Her mother, Susan, looked angry.
Not at Vanessa.
At me.
“Daniel,” she said.
“What exactly is going on?””
I looked at Vanessa.
“I want to speak with her alone.””
Susan crossed her arms.
“After humiliating my daughter?””
I stared at her.
“Your daughter hurt my child.””
The room went quiet.
Vanessa’s father looked at her.
“What is he talking about?””
Vanessa looked down.
Just for a second.
Then she recovered.
“Daniel misunderstood a situation.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
Even now.
Even after everything.
She was still doing it.
“What situation?””
She looked at me.
“You found one argument.””
“One argument?””
“Yes.””
“You grabbed her.””
“I lost control for a moment.””
The honesty surprised me.
But only for a second.
Because she immediately followed it with:
“Because she was pushing me away.””
My hands curled into fists.
“She is a child.””
“And I was trying to become her mother.””
“No.””
The word came out instantly.
“You were trying to force her to accept you.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You never wanted me to replace Emma.””
“That’s because nobody can replace Emma.””
Her expression changed.
There it was again.
That anger.
That resentment.
“She’s been dead for three years, Daniel.””
The room went silent.
I felt like someone had slapped me.
Not because she mentioned Emma.
Because of the way she said it.
Like Emma’s death was an inconvenience.
“Don’t.””
“Why not?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You need to hear this.””
“No.””
“You’re trapped in the past.””
“And you’re angry at a woman who isn’t even alive.””
Her jaw tightened.
“I’m angry because I spent a year trying to build something with you while she still controlled everything.””
I stared at her.
“Emma controlled nothing.””
“You talk about her constantly.””
“She’s Lily’s mother.””
“She’s your excuse.””
My eyes hardened.
“My wife died.””
“And I’m alive.””
The sentence hung between us.
Even Vanessa seemed to realize how cruel it sounded.
But she didn’t apologize.
Instead, she whispered:
“You always chose her.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I looked toward the door.
“I chose my daughter.””
Something flashed across Vanessa’s face.
Fear.
Then anger.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
“Actually, I do.””
I pulled out my phone.
“I’m going to find out everything.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely worried.
“What does that mean?””
“It means I’m going to talk to Claire.””
Her face changed.
Completely.
The color disappeared.
“Who?””
I watched her carefully.
“Claire Whitmore.””
The reaction was instant.
A small movement.
A sharp inhale.
A step backward.
Most people would have missed it.
I didn’t.
Because I was finally paying attention.
“You know her.””
Vanessa said nothing.
“You knew exactly who she was.””
Still nothing.
“Why?””
Her silence answered more than words.
I stepped closer.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
Then she whispered:
“Emma told you something, didn’t she?””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“You found something.””
I stared at her.
“How would you know that?””
She didn’t answer.
And that was the moment I understood.
Vanessa wasn’t scared because Claire called me.
She was scared because she thought I had already found the secret.
I left the room without another word.
Outside, Michael was waiting with Lily.
But before I reached them, my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Claire.
I opened it.
There was a photo attached.
An old photo.
Three women standing together.
One of them was Emma.
One was Claire.
And the third one…
Was Vanessa.
The message underneath said:
*“Daniel, before you confront Vanessa, you need to know something important.””*
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
*“Your wife wasn’t afraid of Vanessa because of what she had done.””*
May you like
A second later, another line appeared.
*“She was afraid because Vanessa knew the truth about Lily’s birth.””*
