Chapter 6: The Name Written on the Birth Certificate
“Because she believed Lily belonged to her.””
Claire’s words hit me harder than anything I had heard that day.
For a few seconds, I couldn’t understand them.
Not because they were complicated.
Because my mind refused to accept them.
I looked down at the document in my hands.
My daughter’s birth certificate.
A piece of paper I had seen before.
A piece of paper I thought I knew.
The document that had always represented the happiest day of my life.
Now it felt like a stranger.
“Explain,” I said.
My voice sounded different.
Lower.
Almost empty.
Claire looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“Not here.””
I glanced toward the venue.
Guests were still inside.
People who had come to watch me marry Vanessa.
People who had no idea my entire life was being pulled apart twenty feet away.
“Then where?””
Claire pointed toward the parking area.
“Somewhere private.””
I took Lily’s hand.
“We’re going together.””
Claire nodded.
“Of course.””
We walked away from the venue.
Every step felt heavier than the last.
Lily stayed close to me.
Too close.
Like she was afraid that if she let go, something else would disappear.
When we reached my car, Claire stopped.
She opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Letters.
Medical records.
Things that looked like pieces of a life someone had hidden.
“Daniel,” she said softly.
“Before I tell you anything, I need you to understand one thing.””
I looked at her.
“Emma loved you.””
The words almost made me angry.
Not because I didn’t believe her.
Because I had spent three years trying to survive without hearing Emma’s voice.
“I know.””
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“You know she loved you. But you don’t know how hard she fought to protect you.””
I said nothing.
She handed me the first page.
It was a medical report.
The hospital logo at the top.
The date.
The day Lily was born.
My eyes moved down.
Mother.
Emma Carter.
Father.
Daniel Carter.
I almost sighed in relief.
“See?””
I pointed at the page.
“It says right there.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
Then she turned the page.
My expression changed.
Another document.
A DNA testing request.
My hands went cold.
“Why is this here?””
Claire took a breath.
“Because Vanessa demanded one.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“She contacted the hospital months after Lily was born.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Why would she do that?””
Claire looked at me.
“Because Vanessa knew something about Lily before you did.””
A memory flashed.
Vanessa asking strange questions.
Vanessa wanting to know about Emma’s pregnancy.
Vanessa wanting to see old photos.
At the time, I thought she was interested in my past.
Now I wondered if she was searching for evidence.
“Daniel,” Claire continued, “do you remember how you met Vanessa?””
I frowned.
“Of course.””
I remembered.
A charity event.
A conversation near the entrance.
She knew my name before I introduced myself.
I had thought it was because we had mutual friends.
“What about it?””
“Did she tell you why she was there?””
I thought.
“No.””
Claire nodded slowly.
“That’s because she wasn’t there by accident.””
My chest tightened.
“What are you saying?””
She looked at Lily.
Then back at me.
“Vanessa had been looking for Emma.””
The world became silent.
“Why?””
Claire’s fingers tightened around the folder.
“Because years ago, before you met Vanessa, she and Emma knew each other.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“No, Emma would have told me.””
Claire looked sad.
“Would she?””
The question hurt.
Because I knew Emma.
She carried pain quietly.
She protected people.
Even when they didn’t deserve it.
“What happened between them?””
Claire hesitated.
“Vanessa and Emma worked at the same clinic.””
I froze.
“The clinic where Emma volunteered?””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
My mind raced.
Emma had told me about that place.
She loved working there.
She loved helping families.
“What does that have to do with Lily?””
Claire looked down.
“Everything.””
A car passed behind us.
The sound disappeared quickly.
But the silence afterward felt enormous.
“Emma couldn’t have children naturally.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
Claire looked at me carefully.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
The word came out immediately.
“That’s not true.””
Claire didn’t argue.
She just waited.
And somehow that made it worse.
Because I knew.
I remembered.
The years before Lily.
The doctor visits.
The disappointment.
The nights Emma cried quietly because she thought I was asleep.
The day we finally found out she was pregnant.
The happiest day of our lives.
I looked at Lily.
My daughter.
My little girl.
My heart.
“What are you saying?””
Claire opened another document.
“Emma received fertility treatment.””
I nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“But the treatment involved a donor.””
My body went numb.
“No.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“I was there.””
Claire’s eyes softened.
“I know you were.””
“I signed paperwork.””
“Yes.””
“Emma told me it was my child.””
“She believed it was.””
That sentence stopped me.
“She believed?””
Claire looked away.
“Because the clinic made a mistake.””
The ground felt unstable beneath me.
“What mistake?””
Claire swallowed.
“The donor records were switched.””
I stared at her.
No words came.
“The clinic discovered it later.””
My voice was barely audible.
“Whose records?””
Claire didn’t answer immediately.
She didn’t need to.
I already knew.
“Vanessa.””
The name felt poisonous.
Claire nodded.
“Vanessa was a donor at that clinic.””
My head started spinning.
“No.””
“She was supposed to be anonymous.””
“No.””
“Emma found out after Lily was born.””
I looked at the papers.
The DNA request.
The documents.
The secrets.
“She knew?””
Claire nodded.
“She found out when the clinic contacted her.””
My voice cracked.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
Claire’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Afraid of me?””
“No.””
Claire looked toward the venue.
“Afraid of Vanessa.””
A cold wave moved through me.
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa had already started trying to get close to your family.””
I thought about the timeline.
Vanessa entering my life after Emma’s death.
Vanessa becoming involved with Lily.
Vanessa insisting she wanted to help.
All of it suddenly looked different.
“She knew Lily was connected to her.””
Claire nodded.
“She believed Lily was biologically hers.””
I looked at my daughter.
“But Emma raised her.””
“Yes.””
“And I raised her.””
“Yes.””
“Then Lily is not hers.””
Claire’s expression softened.
“No.””
A pause.
“Not in the way Vanessa thinks.””
I looked down at the birth certificate.
“Then why didn’t Emma tell me?””
Claire’s eyes lowered.
“Because she was planning to.””
“Planning?””
“She wrote you a letter.””
My heart stopped.
“The letter in the attic?””
Claire nodded.
“She wanted to explain everything.””
I remembered the fire.
The folder.
The pain.
The moment I destroyed the evidence.
“I burned it.””
Claire’s face changed.
“You burned what?””
“I didn’t know.””
I ran a hand through my hair.
“I thought…”
I couldn’t finish.
I thought Emma had betrayed me.
I thought there was something she hid because she didn’t trust me.
I thought I had been abandoned twice.
But maybe I had destroyed the one thing she left behind.
Claire reached into the folder.
“There’s something else.””
She pulled out an envelope.
Old.
Yellowed.
My name written on the front.
My hands began shaking.
“Where did you get that?””
“Emma gave it to me.””
“When?””
“The day before she died.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“Why?””
Claire looked at me.
“Because she knew Vanessa was coming.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“She knew Vanessa was trying to enter your life.””
“That’s impossible.””
Claire shook her head.
“Daniel, Emma knew Vanessa would come after you.””
“How?””
“Because Vanessa told her.””
My blood turned cold.
“She visited Emma in the hospital.””
The image appeared in my mind.
Emma lying there.
Weak.
Fighting.
And Vanessa standing beside her.
“What did she say?””
Claire’s voice became quiet.
“She told Emma that if she couldn’t have the family she wanted…”
She paused.
“She would take the family Emma left behind.””
I looked toward the venue.
Toward the woman in the wedding dress.
The woman who had spent a year pretending to love my daughter.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message.
From Vanessa.
I opened it.
Three words.
*“Ask Claire why Emma died.””*
My stomach dropped.
Another message appeared.
*“She never told you the whole story.””*
I looked at Claire.
She saw the screen.
And for the first time, her face showed fear.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
She whispered:
“Vanessa knows I’m here.””
Before I could answer, another message appeared.
This time from an unknown number.
A photo.
A photo of Lily and me standing in the garden.
Taken seconds ago.
May you like
Underneath it was one sentence.
*“Bring my daughter back, or you’ll lose everything.””*
