Chapter 9: The Witness Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Daniel enlarged the photograph.
Thomas Reed.
The signature was dated only eleven months earlier.
That was impossible.
Thomas had supposedly died two years ago in a car accident.
Daniel remembered attending his memorial service.
He remembered Marcus standing beside the coffin.
He remembered Vanessa whispering that Marcus needed time to grieve his brother.
Now Thomas's signature was appearing on a document that had been created almost a year after his reported death.
Daniel immediately called Laura.
She answered after several rings.
"Daniel?""
"Where did you get that photograph?""
Laura sounded frightened.
"I told you. I found it among the documents Vanessa gave me.""
"Why does it have Thomas's signature?""
"I don't know.""
"Laura, Thomas is dead.""
"I know.""
"Then explain this.""
She began crying.
"Please don't shout.""
Daniel forced himself to lower his voice.
"I'm not shouting. I'm asking you to tell me the truth.""
Laura took a shaky breath.
"Vanessa told me Thomas had signed the documents before he died. She said the date was just when the paperwork had been processed.""
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
"That doesn't explain why the document says he attended a meeting eleven months ago.""
Laura didn't answer.
"Did you meet Thomas?""
"No.""
"Did you speak to him?""
"No.""
"Did you see him?""
Laura began crying harder.
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Laura, I need you to tell me everything.""
"I didn't know what Vanessa was doing.""
"Then why did you sign the document?""
"Because she said Emily wanted it.""
Daniel felt anger rise.
"Emily is dead. How could she have approved something eleven months ago?""
"I know that now.""
"What did you sign?""
Laura was silent.
Then she said:
"A replacement trustee authorization.""
Daniel sat down.
"Did you appoint yourself?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Vanessa told me it was what Emily wanted. She said Noah's inheritance needed someone from his mother's side of the family.""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"And what did you do with that authority?""
"Nothing.""
"Did you approve any transfers?""
"No.""
"Did you sign anything allowing Vanessa to manage Noah's funds?""
Laura hesitated.
Daniel's voice became sharp.
"Laura.""
"One document.""
"What document?""
"An administrative access request.""
Daniel stared at the wall.
"What did it authorize?""
"I don't know exactly.""
"How can you sign a document without knowing what it does?""
"She told me it was temporary!""
Daniel stood.
"Laura, I need you to meet me with Patricia tomorrow morning.""
"I can't.""
"Why not?""
"Because Vanessa knows I contacted you.""
Daniel's stomach tightened.
"How?""
"I don't know. But she called me an hour ago.""
"What did she say?""
Laura's voice dropped.
"She told me to stop talking to you.""
"Did she threaten you?""
"No.""
"Then why are you afraid?""
Laura didn't answer.
Finally, she whispered:
"Because she said Marcus was coming to see me.""
Daniel felt cold.
"Where are you right now?""
"At home.""
"Lock your doors. Don't let anyone in. I'm calling Patricia.""
Before Daniel could say anything else, Laura ended the call.
He immediately dialed her back.
No answer.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
Daniel called Patricia.
"Laura received a threat.""
"What kind?""
"She says Marcus is coming to see her.""
"Daniel, don't go there alone.""
"I'm not waiting.""
Patricia sighed.
"I'll meet you there. But we should also notify the appropriate authorities if there's an immediate threat.""
They drove to Laura's house together.
When they arrived, the front porch light was on.
The curtains were closed.
Daniel knocked.
"Laura?""
No answer.
He knocked again.
"Laura, it's Daniel.""
A few seconds later, the door opened.
Laura stood behind it, looking exhausted.
Her hair was disheveled, and her hands were trembling.
"Come in.""
Daniel stepped inside.
Patricia followed.
Laura immediately locked the door.
"Did Marcus come here?"" Daniel asked.
"No.""
"Did Vanessa?""
"No.""
"Then what's wrong?""
Laura walked to the living room.
A laptop sat open on the coffee table.
Beside it was a stack of papers.
"I found something.""
Daniel approached.
"What?""
Laura turned the laptop toward him.
An email conversation was open.
The sender was Marcus Reed.
The recipient was Vanessa.
The subject line read:
*Noah — Final Arrangements.*
Daniel began reading.
The financial access request has been approved. Laura has signed the replacement trustee documents. Once the remaining authorization is obtained, we can move forward.
Vanessa had replied:
Daniel is asking questions. We need to act before he finds Emily's original documents.
Marcus's response:
What about the boy?
Vanessa:
I'll handle him.
Daniel's hands tightened.
He scrolled down.
There were more messages.
Marcus had discussed the storage unit.
Vanessa had discussed the household account.
They had even discussed Noah's school records.
One message stood out.
The school counselor's report should support our argument that Noah is emotionally unstable and needs a different living arrangement.
Daniel looked up.
"They were building a case against my son.""
Laura nodded.
"I didn't know.""
"How did you find these?""
"Vanessa sent me the wrong attachment.""
Daniel frowned.
"Explain.""
"She wanted me to review a document about Noah's trust. Instead, she forwarded the entire email chain.""
"Why didn't you tell me immediately?""
Laura looked down.
"Because I was afraid.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Afraid of what?""
"Of losing Emily's family. Of being blamed. Of discovering that I had helped them.""
Her voice broke.
"I thought I was protecting Noah.""
Daniel took a breath.
"Then help me protect him now.""
Laura nodded.
She opened another folder.
Inside were copies of financial statements, trustee documents, and several pages of correspondence.
"There's something else.""
Daniel sat beside her.
"What?""
"Vanessa told me the inheritance wasn't the only reason she wanted control.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Then what was?""
Laura swallowed.
"She said Noah's existence was preventing her from getting what she deserved.""
Daniel stared.
"What does that mean?""
Laura pointed to a document.
It was an insurance policy.
Daniel recognized the company name.
It was a policy he had purchased shortly after Emily died.
The policy was designed to provide additional financial protection for Noah.
He read the beneficiary section.
Noah Bennett.
But beneath it was a proposed change request.
The new beneficiary designation listed Vanessa Bennett as the controlling guardian and administrator.
Daniel's stomach tightened.
"Who submitted this?""
Laura looked away.
"Marcus.""
"Was it approved?""
"No. The insurance company rejected it because the required documentation was incomplete.""
Daniel exhaled.
"Thank God.""
Laura began crying.
"I didn't understand how far it had gone.""
Daniel stood.
"Why did you let Vanessa use Emily's name?""
Laura looked up.
"Because she told me Emily had been afraid of you.""
Daniel went still.
"What?""
"She said Emily believed you were too busy with work to raise Noah properly. She told me Emily had wanted me to step in if anything happened.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Did Emily ever say that to you?""
Laura shook her head.
"Not exactly.""
"Then why did you believe it?""
"Because Vanessa had documents.""
Daniel felt his anger shift into something colder.
Vanessa hadn't merely lied.
She had used Emily's memory to convince Laura to cooperate.
She had turned grief into a weapon.
Patricia stepped forward.
"Laura, I need you to preserve every email and document. Do not delete anything. We'll need your full cooperation.""
Laura nodded.
"I'll help.""
Daniel looked at the laptop again.
"There's something I don't understand. If the trustee documents were approved, why hasn't Vanessa moved the money?""
Laura opened another email.
"Because the independent financial institution requested confirmation from Thomas Reed's estate.""
Daniel frowned.
"Thomas's estate?""
"Yes.""
"Who represents his estate?""
Laura looked at him.
"Marcus.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
The pieces were beginning to connect.
Marcus had supposedly inherited responsibility for Thomas's affairs after his death.
He had then used that position to maintain influence over the trust paperwork.
But one question remained.
Was Thomas really dead?
Patricia examined the documents.
"Daniel, I think we need to verify the death record and the signature.""
Daniel nodded.
"Do it.""
Laura looked frightened.
"Why?""
"Because if someone is using a dead man's identity, we need to know who is responsible.""
Then Daniel's phone rang.
It was the school principal.
"Mr. Bennett, I'm sorry to call you unexpectedly.""
"What's happened?""
"Your wife came to the school this afternoon.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Why?""
"She requested copies of Noah's psychological evaluation and asked us to release him to a family representative tomorrow.""
Daniel stood.
"Who?""
The principal checked her notes.
"She said his uncle would be collecting him.""
Daniel's blood ran cold.
"Noah doesn't have an uncle who is authorized to collect him.""
"I thought that might be the case. We refused the request.""
"Did she give you a name?""
"Yes.""
Daniel gripped the phone.
"Who?""
The principal answered.
"Thomas Reed.""
Daniel looked at Patricia.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then the principal added:
"Mr. Bennett, there's something else. Your wife told us that you had signed documents transferring temporary guardianship.""
Daniel's voice became dangerously quiet.
"I signed nothing.""
"I understand. We have preserved the request and the identification information she provided.""
"Please don't release my son to anyone except the people already authorized under his current school records.""
"Of course.""
Daniel ended the call.
Laura covered her mouth.
"Thomas?""
Patricia immediately began making calls.
Daniel looked at the laptop.
Then at the photograph.
Then at the name on the school request.
Someone was attempting to collect Noah using the identity of a man who was supposed to be dead.
And Vanessa had been confident enough to send that person to his son's school.
Daniel called Rachel.
"Find Thomas Reed.""
"Daniel, what do you mean?""
"I want to know whether he is alive.""
Rachel hesitated.
"I'll investigate.""
"Start with the death certificate, accident records, and any current financial activity connected to his identity.""
"I'll get on it.""
Daniel ended the call.
He looked at Patricia.
"Tomorrow, I'm going to the school with you.""
"Good.""
"And I'm filing every report necessary to protect Noah.""
Patricia nodded.
Then Laura spoke.
"Daniel, there's one thing I haven't told you.""
He turned.
"What?""
"Vanessa told me Thomas wasn't supposed to come back until everything was finished.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Come back from where?""
Laura shook her head.
"She didn't say.""
Daniel looked at the school request again.
The name Thomas Reed was typed beneath a photograph of a man wearing a baseball cap.
It was a grainy image from the school's visitor camera.
Patricia enlarged it.
The man's face was partially visible.
Daniel leaned closer.
Then he recognized the eyes.
The same eyes he had seen at the funeral.
The same eyes he had seen in the business meetings.
The same eyes belonging to Marcus Reed.
Daniel looked at Patricia.
"That's not Thomas.""
Patricia examined the photograph.
"No.""
Daniel's phone vibrated.
An unknown number had sent him a text.
Stop looking for Thomas. He doesn't want to be found.
A second message arrived.
And if you want Noah to stay safe, stop asking what happened to Emily.
Daniel read the messages twice.
Then he looked at Laura.
"Do you recognize this number?""
She shook her head.
Daniel turned back to Patricia.
"Save everything.""
For the first time, he wasn't simply investigating financial fraud or a forged document.
Someone was actively trying to frighten him into silence.
And they had just brought his eight-year-old son into the middle of it.
He made one final call.
This time, it was to the detective handling the financial investigation.
"My name is Daniel Bennett. I need to report a suspected identity fraud case connected to an attempted unauthorized collection of my child.""
He paused.
"And I think the man we believed was dead may be alive.""
But before the detective could respond, Daniel received another message.
It contained a photograph.
A photograph of Emily, taken inside her hospital room.
She was holding a sealed envelope.
And standing beside her bed was Marcus Reed.
The timestamp was from the morning of her surgery.

Beneath the photograph was a single sentence.
She knew what we were planning, Daniel. That's why she never made it home.
