Chapter 6: The Hospital Records
At 8:12 the next morning, Daniel received a call from Patricia.
"Daniel, I found the hospital.""
He stood immediately.
"What did you find?""
"I contacted the hospital's records department. They confirmed that Vanessa was listed as a visitor before Emily's surgery.""
Daniel closed his office door.
"Was she authorized to visit?""
"Apparently, yes. But there's an unusual entry in the visitor log.""
"What entry?""
"She requested a private conversation with Emily and asked that it not be included in the general family visitation notes.""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"Can we obtain the medical records?""
"Some records are available through the authorized estate and next-of-kin procedures. Others may require additional legal steps. I'm handling that.""
"What about the guardianship document?""
"Laura has agreed to provide a copy. She says Vanessa told her it was needed for emergency planning.""
Daniel stared at the wall.
"Was Emily conscious when she signed it?""
"That's one of the questions we need answered.""
Patricia paused.
"Daniel, there's something else. The document was signed less than forty-eight hours before Emily's surgery.""
Daniel's throat tightened.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
"I don't know. But the witness section lists a name.""
"Whose?""
"Marcus Reed.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Marcus had been at the hospital.
Marcus had witnessed Emily signing a document.
And later, he had helped Vanessa move money out of Daniel's accounts.
"Patricia, I want the original document.""
"So do I. Laura says she gave it to Vanessa. We'll need to ask for it formally.""
Daniel looked at his calendar.
"Set up a meeting with the hospital's patient advocacy office. I want to understand exactly what happened.""
"I'll arrange it.""
After the call, Daniel went downstairs.
Vanessa was preparing breakfast.
The smell of butter and toasted bread filled the kitchen.
Lily sat at the table eating pancakes.
Sophie was drinking milk.
Noah stood beside the refrigerator.
He was holding a small apple.
Daniel noticed that he hadn't taken anything else.
"Good morning, buddy.""
"Morning, Dad.""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"Why isn't Noah having breakfast?""
Vanessa didn't turn around.
"He said he wanted an apple.""
Daniel pulled out a chair.
"Noah, do you want pancakes?""
The boy glanced at Vanessa.
Then he shook his head.
Vanessa smiled.
"See? He knows what he wants.""
Daniel looked at Noah.
"You can have pancakes if you want them.""
Noah slowly put the apple down.
"Can I have one?""
"Of course.""
Vanessa turned.
"Daniel, I already served breakfast.""
"Then one more pancake won't hurt.""
She placed a pancake on a plate.
Noah sat down.
He took a small bite.
Daniel watched him carefully.
He was beginning to understand that the boy's hesitation wasn't simply about food.
It was about permission.
After breakfast, Daniel drove Noah to school.
On the way, he asked a question he had been thinking about all night.
"Buddy, when Marcus came over, did he ever bring you anything?""
Noah nodded.
"A toy once.""
"What kind?""
"A dinosaur.""
"Did he give it to you?""
"No. Mom put it away.""
"Why?""
"She said it wasn't mine.""
Daniel glanced at him.
"Did Marcus say anything?""
"He said maybe I could have it when I stopped being difficult.""
Daniel felt his jaw tighten.
"Did he ever ask you questions about Mommy?""
Noah nodded.
"He asked where Mommy kept her jewelry.""
Daniel nearly missed the turn.
"What did you say?""
"I told him I didn't know.""
"Why would he ask you that?""
Noah shrugged.
"Mom said he was helping us clean.""
Daniel dropped his son off and headed straight to the hospital.
Patricia was already waiting in the patient advocacy office.
A hospital representative named Mr. Harris greeted them.
"Mr. Bennett, I'm sorry for what your family has been through.""
Daniel nodded.
"I appreciate that. I need to understand what happened during my wife's final admission.""
Mr. Harris opened a folder.
"We have reviewed the accessible records. There are a few matters that require additional authorization, but I can explain what we have confirmed.""
"Please do.""
"Your wife was admitted for a planned surgical procedure. During the preoperative period, she had several visitors.""
"Vanessa?""
"Yes.""
"Marcus Reed?""
Mr. Harris checked the record.
"Yes. He was listed as a visitor.""
Daniel exchanged a look with Patricia.
"Was he family?""
"No. He was registered as a family friend.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Did he meet privately with Emily?""
Mr. Harris reviewed another page.
"There is a note indicating that he witnessed a personal document signed by the patient.""
"What document?""
"We don't have the full document in the general medical record. It appears to have been submitted separately to the patient administration office.""
Patricia immediately spoke.
"Can you identify the document type?""
Mr. Harris hesitated.
"It was described as an emergency family authorization.""
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.
"Did my wife understand what she was signing?""
Mr. Harris looked uncomfortable.
"That would require review of the original record and any relevant clinical notes.""
"Then I want that review.""
"We can initiate a formal request.""
Patricia handed him a signed authorization.
"We have already prepared the appropriate paperwork.""
Mr. Harris accepted it.
"Thank you. We'll process this through the proper channels.""
Daniel leaned back.
"One more question. Did Vanessa have access to my wife's personal belongings after surgery?""
Mr. Harris looked at the file.
"According to the property release log, she collected one sealed envelope and a small personal-effects bag.""
Daniel stared at him.
"Why?""
"The record says she was authorized to collect them by the family contact listed at the time.""
"Who was that?""
Mr. Harris turned the page.
"Marcus Reed.""
Daniel slowly looked at Patricia.
Neither spoke.
On the way out, Patricia stopped him.
"Daniel, we need to be careful.""
"I know.""
"We don't know whether the document was valid, whether it was misunderstood, or whether anyone deliberately misrepresented anything.""
Daniel nodded.
"But someone collected my wife's belongings using Marcus's authorization.""
"Yes.""
"And Vanessa has been hiding the document.""
"That's what the current information suggests.""
Daniel looked through the hospital lobby.
Three years earlier, he had stood in almost exactly the same place, holding Emily's hand before she was taken into surgery.
He remembered her telling him not to worry.
He remembered her smiling at Noah.
He remembered Vanessa hugging him.
Now every memory seemed to contain a question.
His phone rang.
The caller was Rachel.
"Daniel, I have the forensic accountant's preliminary report.""
"Go ahead.""
"We found evidence that several payments to Bennett Family Consulting were routed through an account associated with a private storage facility.""
"Storage facility?""
"Yes. The account was used to pay monthly rental fees.""
"Who owns it?""
"That's the interesting part. The lease is under Marcus Reed's name.""
Daniel stopped walking.
"What was stored there?""
"We don't know yet. But the lease began three weeks after Emily died.""
Daniel looked at Patricia.
She had heard enough to understand.
"Can you send me the address?"" Daniel asked.
Rachel did.
Daniel opened the message.
The storage facility was less than fifteen minutes from his office.
"Don't contact Marcus," he said.
"I won't.""
"And keep the original financial records secured.""
"Already done.""
Daniel ended the call.
Patricia looked at him.
"You're not going there alone.""
"I wasn't planning to.""
They drove to the facility together.
A manager met them at the office and confirmed the lease details after reviewing the appropriate documentation.
The unit had been paid for in advance.
The manager explained that they would need legal authorization before allowing access to the contents.
Patricia arranged for the necessary request.
While they waited, Daniel examined the lease paperwork.
The emergency contact number belonged to Vanessa.
His hands tightened around the page.
"She knew about this place.""
Patricia nodded.
"Apparently.""
A short while later, the facility manager returned with a copy of an additional document.
"There's something else in the file.""
Daniel took it.
It was a handwritten inventory from the day the unit was rented.
The listed items included several boxes of household documents, two suitcases, a jewelry case, and a sealed medical envelope.
Daniel stared at the final entry.
*Emily Bennett — Personal Medical Records.*
His mouth went dry.
"Can you tell us who brought these items?""
The manager checked the paperwork.
"Two people.""
"Names?""
"Marcus Reed and Vanessa Bennett.""
Daniel felt something inside him break.
The medical envelope had been removed from the hospital and placed in a storage unit.
Three years earlier.
He looked at Patricia.
"I want that unit opened legally, as soon as possible.""
"We'll pursue the necessary authorization.""
Daniel's phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
He answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice came through.
"Mr. Bennett? My name is Dr.
Helen Foster. I was one of the physicians involved in your wife's care.""
Daniel stopped breathing.
"Yes?""
"I've recently learned that you are reviewing the circumstances surrounding Emily's final hospitalization.""
"That's correct.""
There was a long pause.
Then the doctor spoke quietly.
"There's something I need to tell you. Something I should have questioned much earlier.""
Daniel gripped the phone.
"What is it?""
"I remember your wife asking to speak with you before surgery. But according to the nursing notes, she was told you had already approved a change to her emergency family authorization.""
Daniel's face went cold.
"I never approved anything.""
"I understand that now.""
"Who told her I had?""
The doctor hesitated.
Then she answered.
"Vanessa.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
Dr. Foster continued.
"And Mr. Bennett, there was another issue. Your wife specifically requested that a sealed letter be given to you if anything went wrong.""
Daniel's voice became barely audible.
"Did I receive it?""
"No.""
"Where is it?""
"I don't know. But I remember the nurse handing it to the person who collected your wife's belongings.""
Daniel already knew the answer.
"Who?""
Dr. Foster took a breath.
"Marcus Reed.""
The call ended several minutes later.
Daniel stood beside the storage facility office, unable to move.
Emily had written him a final letter.
Someone had collected it.
And for three years, he had never known it existed.
His phone vibrated again.
This time, the message came from Patricia.
The hospital has located the original emergency authorization. There is a section that was not included in the copy Laura gave us.
Daniel opened the attached photograph.
At the bottom of the document, beneath Emily's signature, was a handwritten sentence.
This authorization is valid only if Daniel Bennett is informed and agrees in writing.
Below that sentence, someone had written:
*Daniel Bennett — APPROVED.*
But the signature beside it wasn't his.
May you like
And when Daniel enlarged the photograph, he recognized the handwriting immediately.
It belonged to Marcus Reed.
