Amused

Chapter 3: The Secret Inside Vanessa's Bedroom

Daniel didn't move for several seconds.

He was still crouched in front of Noah, holding the little blue notebook.

“What did you say, buddy?””

Noah swallowed.

“There's something in Mom's bedroom.””

“Vanessa's bedroom?””

The boy nodded.

“What is it?””

“I don't know what it's called.””

“Can you describe it?””

Noah glanced toward the hallway.

“It's a folder. She keeps it inside the drawer under her clothes.””

Daniel felt his pulse quicken.

“Why do you think I need to see it?””

“Because she said it was about me.””

“What exactly did she say?””

Noah rubbed his fingers together.

“She was talking on the phone last night. She said when the paperwork was finished, things would be different.””

Daniel stared at him.

“What paperwork?””

“I don't know.””

Noah's eyes began to fill.

“She said I wouldn't be a problem anymore.””

Daniel placed the notebook on the desk.

“Listen to me. You haven't done anything wrong.””

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

He stood and took his son's hand.

“Let's go downstairs.””

Vanessa was in the living room when they entered.

She was sitting on the sofa, scrolling through her phone.

“Daniel, are you planning to interrogate everyone in this house tonight?””

“No. I need to talk to you.””

“About what now?””

“Your bedroom.””

Her phone lowered.

“What about it?””

“I need to look through the drawer in your dresser.””

Vanessa stared at him.

Then she laughed.

“Have you lost your mind?””

“Noah told me there's a folder in there.””

Her expression changed.

Daniel saw it.

A quick tightening around the mouth.

A flicker of panic.

Then she recovered.

“Noah has been going through my things?””

“He's eight. I'm asking you a question.””

“You have absolutely no right to search my personal belongings.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Then tell me what's in the folder.””

“Private documents.””

“What documents?””

“Family documents.””

“About Noah?””

Vanessa stood.

“Daniel, this is becoming ridiculous.””

From the staircase, Noah watched silently.

Vanessa noticed him.

Her voice softened instantly.

“Sweetheart, why don't you go upstairs and play?””

Noah didn't move.

“Come on, Noah. Mommy and Daddy need to talk.””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Noah can stay.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“Fine. But don't blame me when he starts thinking he can control every conversation in this house.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Enough.””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa walked toward the staircase.

“I'm going to bed.””

Daniel watched her disappear upstairs.

He waited until he heard the bedroom door close.

Then he turned to Noah.

“Stay here with Lily and Sophie. I'll be right back.””

“Okay, Dad.””

Daniel went upstairs.

He found Vanessa standing beside the dresser, holding a glass of water.

She looked at him.

“Are you seriously going to search my room?””

“Yes.””

“Then I'm calling my lawyer.””

“That's your choice.””

Daniel opened the dresser.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don't touch my clothes.””

He opened the bottom drawer.

There were folded sweaters, scarves, and a small jewelry box.

Nothing unusual.

Then he noticed a thin folder tucked beneath a stack of winter clothes.

He pulled it out.

Vanessa's face drained of color.

“Daniel, don't.””

He opened the folder.

The first document was a bank statement.

The second was a series of receipts.

The third was a printed email.

Daniel looked at the name at the top.

*Vanessa Bennett.*

Below it was a transaction history showing several withdrawals from the household account.

Small amounts at first.

Then larger ones.

$450.

$800.

$1,200.

$2,500.

Daniel flipped through the pages.

“What is this?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Household expenses.””

“Why are there transfers to an account I don't recognize?””

“It's my personal account.””

“Why is money from the household account going into it?””

“Because I'm the one managing the household.””

Daniel looked at the dates.

Some transfers had been made on days Vanessa claimed she had spent money on groceries.

He turned another page.

A spreadsheet listed expenses for the children.

Lily.

Sophie.

Noah.

Beside Noah's name was a monthly allocation of $40.

Beside Lily's was $320.

Beside Sophie's was $280.

Daniel looked up.

“Why does Noah have a forty-dollar monthly food allocation?””

Vanessa shrugged.

“He doesn't eat much.””

“Lily is fourteen. Sophie is five. He's eight. Why is there such a difference?””

“Because I know what each child needs.””

Daniel put the paper on the dresser.

“Did you create this?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because someone has to keep track of the money.””

Daniel looked through the folder again.

Then he found a document with a heading that made his stomach tighten.

*Guardianship and Estate Planning Consultation.*

He read the first page.

It was a summary of a consultation with a family attorney.

The document discussed parental authority, guardianship arrangements, and the possibility of modifying Noah's living arrangements if Daniel became unable to care for him.

Daniel read the final paragraph twice.

It referenced a proposed arrangement in which Vanessa would seek expanded authority over Noah's inheritance and financial interests.

He looked at her.

“What is this?””

Vanessa's voice became defensive.

“Estate planning.””

“Why are you discussing Noah's inheritance?””

“Because you're wealthy, Daniel. Someone has to think about the future.””

“I'm his father. I already think about his future.””

“And you're not always going to be here.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“That's why I have a will.””

Vanessa reached for the papers.

“Give those back.””

He moved them out of reach.

“Who is this attorney?””

“Someone I consulted.””

“Without telling me?””

“I don't need permission to ask a lawyer questions.””

Daniel stared at the document.

“Did you ask this attorney how to gain control of my son's inheritance?””

Vanessa laughed sharply.

“Don't be absurd.””

“Then explain this paragraph.””

She grabbed the paper.

“You're twisting everything.””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“I'm going to verify every document in this folder.””

“You're making a huge mistake.””

“Maybe. But I won't make the mistake of ignoring this again.””

He gathered the papers.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Daniel, think about what you're doing. You're destroying our marriage over a child's complaint about a sandwich.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No. I'm questioning our marriage because my son is afraid to tell me he's hungry.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“You've always favored him.””

“He's my child.””

“And Lily and Sophie are mine!””

“They're your children, too. That's why I expected you to treat all three fairly.””

Vanessa looked away.

Then she said something Daniel would remember for the rest of his life.

“Maybe if Emily had lived, none of this would be happening.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Get out of my way.””

He walked past her.

Downstairs, Lily was sitting on the couch with Sophie.

Noah was beside them, holding his new remote-controlled car.

The moment Daniel entered, Noah looked up.

“Did you find it?””

Daniel nodded.

“Go upstairs and get your pajamas, buddy.””

Noah hesitated.

“Is Mom mad?””

Daniel crouched.

“That's not your responsibility.””

Noah nodded and climbed the stairs.

Lily waited until he was gone.

Then she looked at her father.

“Dad?””

“What's wrong, Lily?””

She glanced toward the staircase.

“Are you going to send Noah away?””

Daniel frowned.

“Why would you ask that?””

Lily picked at a loose thread on her sleeve.

“Because Mom says you're going to send him to live somewhere else if he keeps causing problems.””

Daniel's stomach tightened.

“Who told you that?””

“Mom.””

“When?””

“Last week.””

Daniel sat beside her.

“Lily, Noah isn't causing problems.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

Lily nodded.

Then her eyes filled.

“Dad, I tried giving him my sandwich yesterday.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“What happened?””

“Mom saw me.””

“What did she do?””

Lily's voice dropped.

“She took the sandwich away and said I was making things worse. She told me if I wanted to help Noah so badly, I could give him my birthday presents, too.””

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

“Did she take your phone?””

Lily nodded.

“For two days.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Lily began crying.

“Because she said if I told you, Sophie and I might have to go live with our dad.””

Daniel pulled her into a hug.

“Listen to me. Nobody is sending you anywhere because you told the truth.””

Lily wiped her cheeks.

“Can I tell you something else?””

“Anything.””

“Mom sometimes makes Noah stand in the pantry when he asks for snacks.””

Daniel went rigid.

“What?””

“She says he's being greedy. She makes him wait until dinner.””

“How long?””

“I don't know. Sometimes a long time.””

Daniel looked toward the kitchen.

The pantry door was closed.

He stood and walked over.

When he opened it, he saw shelves filled with crackers, cereal, cookies, fruit snacks, and several boxes of granola bars.

At the bottom sat a small plastic container.

Inside were two slices of bread and a half-empty jar of peanut butter.

A handwritten label was stuck to the lid.

*NOAH — ONLY IF APPROVED.*

Daniel stared at it.

He picked up the container.

Then he noticed something else.

A small sheet of paper was taped to the inside of the pantry door.

It contained a handwritten list.

*House Rules:*

1. No extra snacks without permission. 2. No touching Lily's food.

3. No touching Sophie's food. 4. No asking Dad for money.

5. No talking about Mom Emily at dinner. 6. No crying when corrected.

Daniel read the list twice.

His hands began to shake.

Behind him, Lily whispered:

“Dad, there's something else.””

He turned.

She was standing in the doorway, holding a folded piece of paper.

“I found this in Mom's purse when I was looking for my school permission slip.””

Daniel took it.

It was a printed message from an unknown phone number.

The message read:

The boy is becoming suspicious. You need to get Daniel to sign the updated paperwork before he starts asking questions.

Below it was Vanessa's reply.

I'm working on it. Once he signs, I won't have to keep dealing with this situation.

Daniel felt the room tilt.

He looked at Lily.

“Where did you find this?””

“In Mom's purse.””

“Did she know you saw it?””

Lily shook her head.

Daniel carefully placed the message inside the folder.

Then his phone vibrated.

An incoming call appeared on the screen.

*Rachel — Executive Assistant.*

He answered.

“Rachel?””

“Daniel, I'm sorry to call so late, but I found something in the company records you asked me to review.””

“What?””

“There's a recurring transfer from one of your property management accounts to a company registered under Vanessa's maiden name.””

Daniel frowned.

“How much?””

Rachel paused.

“Just over eighty thousand dollars in six months.””

Daniel looked down at the folder in his hand.

“What's the company?””

“Bennett Family Consulting.””

Daniel didn't recognize the name.

“Who owns it?””

“Vanessa.””

He slowly sat down.

Rachel continued.

“There's another problem. The latest payment was approved using a digital authorization that appears to have your signature.””

Daniel's blood ran cold.

“I didn't approve it.””

“I thought you might say that.””

“Send me everything.””

“I already have. But Daniel…”

“What?””

“The transfer authorization includes a document reference. It's connected to the estate-planning file Vanessa recently opened.””

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

At the top, Noah stood in his pajamas, watching him.

“Dad?””

Daniel forced himself to smile.

“Come here, buddy.””

Noah walked down slowly.

Daniel opened his arms.

The boy climbed onto his lap.

“Are we okay?”” Noah whispered.

Daniel held him tightly.

“We're going to be okay.””

Then he looked at the folder.

For the first time, the empty lunchbox no longer seemed like an isolated act of cruelty.

It was part of something much bigger.

And tomorrow morning, Daniel intended to find out exactly what Vanessa had been planning for his son.

Because the next document Rachel had promised to send contained a name Daniel recognized.

A name belonging to someone who had attended Emily's funeral.

May you like

Someone who had stood beside Vanessa while Daniel was grieving.

And someone who, according to the bank records, had been receiving money from his household account for months.
