Amused

Chapter 7: The Signature That Was Never Mine

Daniel stared at the photograph on his phone.

The document was three years old, but the handwriting was unmistakable.

Marcus Reed had written Daniel's name beneath a statement claiming that he had approved an emergency guardianship arrangement for Noah.

Daniel enlarged the image again.

The signature looked convincing.

Almost perfect.

But there was one detail Marcus had overlooked.

Daniel always signed his full name with a distinctive loop beneath the letter B. The signature on the document had no loop.

Someone had copied his signature from another document.

Someone had deliberately made it look like he had agreed to something he had never even seen.

"Patricia," Daniel said, his voice dangerously calm, "I want to know exactly what this document was supposed to accomplish.""

His attorney sat beside him in the storage facility office.

She examined the photograph carefully.

"This appears to be an attempt to establish an emergency guardianship arrangement. But we need the original document and an independent examination before making any legal conclusions.""

"Could this have given Vanessa control over Noah?""

"Not automatically. A document like this cannot simply erase your parental rights. However, someone could potentially use it to support a misleading application or create confusion during a legal dispute.""

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

"And the sentence saying I had to agree in writing?""

"That makes the alleged approval especially important. If your signature was forged, the entire basis of the arrangement is questionable.""

Daniel stood.

"Then we're getting the original.""

Patricia nodded.

"I've already contacted the appropriate authorities about preserving the document. We should also make a formal report concerning the suspected forgery and financial transactions.""

Daniel looked through the office window toward the storage units.

Three years.

For three years, someone had kept his wife's final belongings hidden.

And for at least eighteen months, someone had been using those secrets to manipulate his family.

His phone rang.

Vanessa.

He answered.

"Hello.""

"Daniel, where are you?""

"Working.""

"Don't lie to me. Marcus called.""

Daniel said nothing.

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

"He says you accused him of stealing money.""

"I asked him to explain unauthorized transfers.""

"You're destroying his reputation over some accounting mistakes.""

"Accounting mistakes don't require forged signatures.""

Silence.

Then Vanessa said, "What document are you talking about?""

Daniel looked at Patricia.

He decided not to reveal everything.

"The hospital records.""

A sharp breath came through the phone.

"Why are you contacting the hospital?""

"Because I have questions about Emily's final days.""

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"Daniel, you need to stop.""

"Why?""

"Because you're reopening something that should stay closed.""

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

"Something that should stay closed?""

"Emily is gone. Nothing you discover is going to bring her back.""

"No. But it might explain why someone took her personal belongings and hid them in a storage unit.""

There was a long silence.

Then Vanessa spoke.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

"That's what you said when I asked about Noah's lunch.""

"Daniel—"

He ended the call.

Patricia watched him.

"She knows about the investigation.""

"Good.""

"Daniel, I need you to understand that she may react unpredictably. We should make sure Noah is protected before she learns anything else.""

Daniel nodded.

"He's at school. I'm picking him up early.""

He drove directly to the school.

When he entered the classroom, Noah was sitting at his desk, carefully coloring a picture.

His teacher smiled.

"Mr. Bennett. Everything okay?""

"Yes. I'm taking him home for the afternoon.""

Noah looked up.

"Did I do something wrong?""

Daniel crouched.

"Absolutely not.""

"Are we going somewhere?""

"Yes. I thought we could spend the afternoon together.""

Noah put his crayons away.

As they walked toward the parking lot, Daniel noticed the boy repeatedly looking over his shoulder.

"What's wrong, buddy?""

"Is Mom going to be home?""

Daniel opened the passenger door.

"Why?""

Noah climbed into the SUV.

"She said I wasn't supposed to leave the house with you unless she knew where we were going.""

Daniel closed the door gently.

Then he walked around to the driver's side.

"You're with me. You're safe.""

Noah nodded.

But he kept looking at the rearview mirror.

At home, Daniel asked the housekeeper to prepare lunch for the children.

He specifically instructed her to make enough food for everyone.

Noah sat at the dining table.

There was a bowl of pasta, a small salad, garlic bread, and a glass of milk in front of him.

He stared at it.

Daniel sat beside him.

"Something wrong?""

Noah shook his head.

"Can I save some for later?""

"Of course.""

"Even if I don't finish it?""

"Even then.""

Noah slowly picked up his fork.

After lunch, Daniel went upstairs to collect the folder he had left in his office.

When he returned, Vanessa was standing in the living room.

Her expression was cold.

"Where have you been?""

"With Noah.""

"You took him out of school without telling me.""

"I'm his father.""

"And I'm his stepmother. I have responsibilities, too.""

Daniel placed the folder on the table.

"Then start by explaining why you've been discussing his guardianship behind my back.""

Vanessa laughed.

"You're obsessed with this.""

"Who told you I approved Emily's emergency authorization?""

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

"Marcus's handwriting is on the document.""

Her face went pale.

Only briefly.

Then she looked away.

"Marcus was helping with paperwork.""

"Did you ask him to forge my signature?""

"Don't be ridiculous.""

"Did you know he was doing it?""

Vanessa walked toward the window.

"I was trying to make sure Noah had a stable future.""

"By creating a false record of my consent?""

"You don't understand what I was dealing with!""

"Then explain it.""

Vanessa turned.

"Emily made things difficult even after she died.""

Daniel stared at her.

"What does that mean?""

"She left documents, instructions, promises. Everything was about Noah. Nobody ever considered what I needed.""

Daniel's voice hardened.

"You're angry because a dead woman left instructions to protect her son?""

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

"She didn't trust anyone! Not you, not me, not even her own sister!""

"Maybe she had a reason.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"You think you're perfect because you have money? You think being a father means writing checks and coming home occasionally?""

Daniel didn't respond.

She continued.

"I was the one here every day. I had to deal with his crying, his questions, his memories of Emily. I had to listen to him talk about a woman who wasn't even alive anymore.""

Daniel looked at her.

"He's eight years old.""

"And I have two daughters of my own!""

"Then why did you make him feel like he didn't belong?""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

For the first time, she stopped pretending to be offended.

"Because he doesn't.""

The words landed between them.

Daniel stared at her.

From the staircase came a small sound.

"Dad?""

Noah stood on the landing.

He had heard everything.

Vanessa turned quickly.

"Noah, sweetheart—"

The boy stepped backward.

Daniel immediately moved toward him.

"Buddy, come here.""

Noah ran down the stairs and grabbed his father's hand.

Vanessa's voice changed.

"Daniel, don't let him turn you against me.""

Daniel looked at her.

"You did that yourself.""

His phone rang.

Patricia.

He answered.

"Daniel, we have the original document.""

"Where?""

"The hospital has located it in its archived administration records. And the signature examination has revealed something important.""

Daniel looked toward Noah.

"What?""

"Marcus's handwriting is on the authorization, but there's a second signature on the accompanying statement.""

"Whose?""

Patricia paused.

"Vanessa's.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

Patricia continued.

"There's also a handwritten note attached to the file. It says that the emergency arrangement should only be activated if you became medically incapacitated or legally unable to care for Noah.""

Daniel frowned.

"Then why was it used to support a guardianship review?""

"That's what we're investigating.""

"Who requested the review?""

Another pause.

"According to the correspondence, the request came from a private attorney representing Vanessa.""

Daniel looked at his wife.

She was watching him.

Her face had lost every trace of color.

"Daniel," Patricia said, "there's something else. The attorney's office has agreed to provide the original instructions they received.""

"Send them to me.""

"I will.""

Daniel ended the call.

Vanessa suddenly moved toward the staircase.

"Give me your phone.""

Daniel stepped away.

"No.""

"Daniel, I need to explain.""

"Then explain.""

She looked at Noah.

"Not in front of him.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"You're right. He doesn't need to hear another excuse.""

He took Noah upstairs.

Behind him, Vanessa shouted.

"You're going to regret this!""

Daniel didn't turn around.

But when he reached Noah's bedroom, his phone vibrated again.

Patricia had forwarded the attorney's correspondence.

Daniel opened the first page.

Then the second.

On the third page was a letter written by Vanessa.

It contained a sentence that made his blood run cold.

Daniel is emotionally attached to the boy because of Emily's death. If we can demonstrate that he is unable to make objective decisions regarding Noah, I believe the court will consider appointing an alternative guardian.

Below it was Marcus's response.

And what happens to the inheritance?

Vanessa's answer was only seven words.

Once I have legal authority, we can proceed.

Daniel looked at Noah.

The boy was sitting on his bed, holding his remote-controlled car.

He had no idea that adults had been discussing his future like a business transaction.

Daniel put his phone away.

He had finally discovered what Vanessa wanted.

May you like

But he still didn't know why Emily had been so afraid of her.

And that answer was waiting inside the sealed medical envelope.
