Chapter 9: The Person Who Was Hiding in Plain Sight
The words echoed through the room.
They used my name to authorize it.
Adrian stood frozen with the phone against his ear.
I watched the blood drain from his face.
“What records?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“Mia’s school records.””
My heart tightened.
“Why would someone take those?””
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew.
They weren’t looking for information.
They were looking for a way in.
Daniel immediately grabbed his coat.
“We need to move.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Where?””
“First, we find out who accessed the records.””
Vanessa stood.
“I know who.””
Everyone turned.
She looked terrified.
Not the fear of someone being accused.
The fear of someone who finally realized the danger was much bigger than herself.
“Who?”” Adrian demanded.
Vanessa looked at the envelope in my hand.
Then at the letter.
“I think I know what your mother was trying to tell you.””
My grip tightened.
“You think?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Your mother didn’t mean me.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“She warned you not to trust anyone who says they’re protecting Mia.””
She pointed at the letter.
“She wasn’t talking about me.””
I stared at her.
“Then who?””
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
“I don’t know.””
But her face said she did.
Adrian noticed too.
“Vanessa.””
She closed her eyes.
“There was someone else involved.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Your mother’s assistant.””
The name meant nothing to me.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at Adrian.
“Caroline.””
Adrian frowned.
“My mother’s assistant?””
“Yes.””
“That makes no sense.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“It does if you know what happened.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Explain.””
Vanessa sat down.
“Caroline worked for your mother for almost fifteen years.””
I listened carefully.
“She knew about Rachel. She knew about Mia. She knew about the documents.””
Adrian’s face hardened.
“And she never said anything?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because she was the one your father trusted to clean up the mess.””
The room went still.
My stomach turned.
“Clean up?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She handled the paperwork.””
Daniel immediately reached for the documents.
“Wait.””
He scanned the papers again.
Then froze.
“What?””
He pointed.
“The signatures.””
Everyone leaned closer.
“There are two sets of approvals.””
Adrian looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
“Your father authorized the arrangement.””
Daniel tapped the page.
“But someone else processed everything.””
His finger moved to the signature.
Caroline’s name.
My skin prickled.
Adrian stood.
“Where is she now?””
Vanessa answered quietly.
“She still works for the family.””
The sentence made my blood run cold.
“What?””
Adrian stared.
“Where?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“At your company.””
Nobody spoke.
Because suddenly everything connected.
The documents.
The school records.
The access.
The fake authorization.
Someone with power.
Someone who knew the system.
Someone close.
Adrian grabbed his phone.
He called immediately.
The call went unanswered.
Again.
And again.
Finally, voicemail.
His expression darkened.
“She’s not picking up.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Check the security footage.””
Adrian opened an app on his phone.
His company’s security system.
He typed quickly.
Then stopped.
“What?””
He turned the screen toward us.
There was a login.
A recent access.
The username was visible.
*CWHITMORE.*
My breath caught.
“Whitmore?””
Adrian stared.
“My father’s account.””
“But he’s dead.””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at the screen.
“Which means someone has access to his old credentials.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Caroline.””
Adrian’s phone suddenly rang.
Everyone jumped.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
Calm.
Professional.
Familiar.
“Adrian.””
His face changed.
“Caroline.””
The room went silent.
“You finally figured it out.””
His grip tightened.
“Where is Mia?””
A pause.
Then:
“She’s safe.””
I felt anger rise inside me.
“Safe?””
I stepped closer to the phone.
“You took her records.””
Caroline ignored me.
“Emily.””
The fact that she knew my name made me feel sick.
“You should never have opened that letter.””
My heart stopped.
“You know about the letter?””
A quiet laugh.
“Of course I do.””
Adrian’s voice turned cold.
“What did you do?””
“I protected the family.””
“By threatening my daughter?””
“She is not your daughter.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Adrian went silent.
Caroline continued.
“She was never supposed to become part of this.””
I felt rage replace fear.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
Caroline sighed.
“You sound like your mother.””
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
“She made the same mistake.””
Adrian’s face changed.
“What mistake?””
“Believing she could fix something that was already broken.””
Daniel motioned for us to stay quiet.
He was trying to trace the call.
Adrian kept her talking.
“Where is Mia?””
Caroline didn’t answer.
Instead, she said:
“Do you know why your father never told you?””
“Tell me.””
“Because he knew you would choose her.””
“Choose who?””
“Mia.””
The silence that followed was painful.
Caroline continued.
“Your father built everything around control. His company. His reputation. His family.””
Her voice became colder.
“And then Mia existed.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“She was innocent.””
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
“Because innocent things create problems.””
I felt sick hearing those words.
Adrian’s voice shook.
“You’re insane.””
“No.””
Caroline sounded almost sad.
“I’m loyal.””
The call crackled.
Then Daniel suddenly pointed.
“Got it.””
He whispered.
“Location.””
Adrian looked at him.
Daniel read the screen.
“An old Whitmore property.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What?””
She stood slowly.
“That place.””
“What about it?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“That’s where Rachel disappeared.””
My heart stopped.
Adrian looked at the phone.
“Caroline.””
“Yes?””
“You’re at the old house.””
Silence.
Then Caroline said:
“So you finally remembered.””
Adrian looked confused.
“Remembered what?””
“That night.””
“What night?””
“The night you lost your daughter.””
His face went pale.
“I never lost her.””
Caroline’s voice softened.
“You did.””
“No.””
“You just didn’t know.””
The call went quiet.
Then Caroline said:
“Come alone.””
Adrian immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“If you bring anyone else, you’ll never see Mia.””
My heart stopped.
“Adrian, don’t.””
He looked at me.
I could see the conflict in his eyes.
The fear.
The desperation.
But then Mia’s face appeared in his mind.
The little girl who called him Daddy.
He spoke carefully.
“Let me talk to her.””
A pause.
Then a sound.
A small voice.
“Daddy?””
I covered my mouth.
“Mia.””
Adrian’s eyes filled instantly.
“Mia, are you okay?””
“Yes.””
Her voice was shaky.
“But Daddy…”
“What?””
“Why does this lady keep saying Mommy isn’t my real mommy?””
The room broke.
I couldn’t breathe.
Adrian looked at me.
And I saw the pain on his face.
Caroline came back on the phone.
“Now you understand.””
Adrian’s voice was barely controlled.
“If you hurt her—”
“I won’t.””
“Then let her go.””
“Not until you come.””
The call ended.
Daniel immediately spoke.
“We go together.””
Adrian nodded.
Vanessa grabbed her coat.
“I’m coming.””
Adrian looked at her.
“Why?””
She looked down.
“Because I spent eight years being afraid.””
She lifted her eyes.
“I’m done hiding.””
The old Whitmore property was thirty minutes outside the city.
A place abandoned after Adrian’s father died.
A place nobody talked about.
A place filled with memories nobody wanted.
When we arrived, the house looked exactly like something from a nightmare.
Dark windows.
Broken fence.
No lights.
Adrian walked ahead.
I grabbed his hand.
He looked back.
“You don’t have to do this alone.””
He squeezed my fingers.
“I know.””
The front door opened before we reached it.
Caroline stood there.
Smiling.
“Adrian.””
His face hardened.
“Where is Mia?””
She stepped aside.
“In the room behind me.””
I heard a small voice.
“Daddy?””
I moved forward.
But Caroline stopped me.
“Not yet.””
Adrian stared at her.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
Then back at Adrian.
“Because before you take her home…”
She pulled out a document.
“And before you hear what happened eight years ago…”
She smiled faintly.
“You need to know the truth about Emily.””
My heart stopped.
“What about me?””
Caroline held up the paper.
“Your adoption records.””
The world went silent.
And then she said:
“You were never supposed to find Mia.””
May you like
A pause.
“Because you were never supposed to be her mother.””
