Chapter 8: The Threat Against My Daughter
The photograph stayed on Vanessa’s phone screen.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody even moved.
Because the message was no longer about old secrets.
It was no longer about a hidden past.
It was about Mia.
My daughter.
Right now.
I grabbed the phone from Vanessa’s hand.
“Who sent this?””
She looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
“Who has been watching her?””
“I don’t know.””
I turned to Adrian.
His face had changed completely.
The confusion was gone.
The anger was gone.
Only one thing remained.
A father’s fear.
“Where is she?””
My voice shook.
Adrian immediately took out his phone.
“She’s with my sister. She picked Mia up after school.””
I called before he could finish.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
No answer.
My heart began pounding.
“Pick up.””
Another ring.
Still nothing.
Adrian took his phone back.
He called.
Same result.
Daniel stood.
“We need to leave.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Where?””
“To get Mia.””
Nobody argued.
Not even Vanessa.
Because whatever happened in the past, whatever mistakes had been made, there was one thing everyone understood.
A child was in danger.
The drive to my sister-in-law’s house felt endless.
Every red light.
Every car.
Every second.
It all felt like something was standing between me and my daughter.
Adrian drove faster than usual.
I had never seen him like that.
His hands were gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles had turned white.
I reached over and touched his arm.
“She’s okay.””
He didn’t answer.
“She’s okay,” I repeated.
This time, he nodded.
But I knew he wasn’t convinced.
Because a parent’s mind doesn’t listen to logic when their child might be hurt.
Behind us, Daniel followed in his car.
Vanessa sat beside him.
Neither spoke.
When we arrived, the front door was open.
My stomach dropped.
“Adrian.””
He was already running.
“Mia!””
We rushed inside.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
My sister-in-law, Lauren, came running from the kitchen.
“What happened?””
“Where’s Mia?””
Lauren looked confused.
“She’s upstairs.””
I almost collapsed from relief.
Almost.
Then I noticed her expression.
“Why?””
“What do you mean?””
“You look scared.””
Lauren glanced toward the stairs.
“She got a strange phone call.””
Everything inside me went cold.
“What?””
“About twenty minutes ago.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Who called her?””
“I don’t know.””
“Where is Mia?””
Lauren pointed upstairs.
“She’s in her room.””
I ran.
I didn’t care about anything else.
I ran until I reached Mia’s door.
“Mia?””
No answer.
My hand shook as I opened it.
She was sitting on the bed.
Holding her stuffed rabbit.
Looking at a piece of paper.
“Mia.””
She looked up.
And the second she saw me, her face changed.
“Mommy.””
I crossed the room and hugged her so tightly she squeaked.
“Oh my God.””
She wrapped her arms around me.
“You came.””
The words broke my heart.
“Of course I came.””
Adrian entered behind me.
He immediately dropped beside her.
“Are you okay?””
Mia nodded.
Then looked at the paper in her hand.
“Daddy?””
His eyes moved to it.
“What is that?””
Mia hesitated.
“I don’t know.””
I took it gently.
It was a drawing.
A child’s drawing.
At first glance, it looked normal.
A family.
A house.
A sun.
Then I saw something written at the bottom.
My blood froze.
*I know who your real mother is.*
Mia looked between us.
“Is something wrong?””
I folded the paper immediately.
“No, sweetheart.””
But my voice betrayed me.
She noticed.
Children always notice.
“Is it about the dress?””
My heart broke.
“No.””
“Is Vanessa mad at me?””
I pulled her close.
“No.””
“Then why is everyone acting scared?””
I had no answer.
Because she was eight years old.
She should have been worried about cake flavors.
Homework.
Cartoons.
Not adults’ secrets.
Adrian sat beside her.
“Mia, did anyone talk to you today?””
She looked down.
“Someone called.””
My entire body went tense.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“What did they say?””
She squeezed her rabbit.
“They asked if I knew a woman named Rachel.””
Adrian froze.
“And what did you say?””
“I said no.””
Mia looked at him.
“Was I supposed to know her?””
Nobody spoke.
Because the question was innocent.
And painful.
Adrian looked away.
I saw tears in his eyes.
A sight I had almost never seen.
Then Mia asked:
“Daddy… am I still your daughter?””
The room shattered.
Adrian immediately pulled her into his arms.
“Don’t ever ask that again.””
“But—”
“No.””
His voice broke.
“You are my daughter.””
He held her tighter.
“Nothing changes that.””
I watched them.
And despite everything.
Despite the lies.
Despite the secrets.
I believed him.
Because love was not only about biology.
It was about every bedtime story.
Every scraped knee.
Every nightmare.
Every moment.
But someone out there was trying to convince my daughter otherwise.
And I wanted to know why.
Later that evening, after Mia finally fell asleep, we gathered downstairs.
Daniel placed several documents on the table.
“We need to understand the pattern.””
Adrian looked exhausted.
“The pattern?””
“Yes.””
Daniel pointed at the papers.
“Someone has been controlling information for years.””
Vanessa sat quietly.
She looked nothing like the confident woman from the birthday party.
She looked like someone waiting for punishment.
I looked at her.
“Tell us everything.””
She nodded.
“I will.””
Adrian crossed his arms.
“Start with my father.””
Vanessa took a breath.
“Your father found out about Rachel’s pregnancy before anyone else.””
She looked at Adrian.
“He believed having a child outside his plans would damage the family name.””
Adrian looked disgusted.
“So he paid people.””
“Yes.””
“And you helped.””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
Even though I expected it.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because I was nineteen.””
“That doesn’t excuse it.””
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“I was scared of him too.””
The room went quiet.
Vanessa continued.
“Your father threatened my family. He said if I didn’t cooperate, he would ruin my parents.””
Adrian looked away.
“My father did that?””
“Yes.””
Daniel nodded.
“He had a history of using influence to control people.””
Adrian looked at him.
“You knew?””
“I investigated him.””
“When?””
“After Rachel contacted me.””
Adrian rubbed his face.
“This is insane.””
Then Vanessa said something that changed the room.
“There’s one person we haven’t talked about.””
Everyone looked at her.
“Who?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then:
“Your mother.””
I frowned.
“My mother is dead.””
“I know.””
“Then what?””
Vanessa looked at the window.
“She left something behind.””
Daniel immediately looked up.
“What?””
“A message.””
Adrian stared.
“Where?””
Vanessa reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
I recognized it instantly.
Not because I had seen it before.
Because of the handwriting.
My mother’s handwriting.
My hands began shaking.
“Where did you get that?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“She gave it to me.””
“When?””
“Before she died.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“My mother knew?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She knew everything.””
Adrian looked at the envelope.
“Why didn’t you give it to Emily?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Because your father told me if she ever read it, Mia would become a target.””
Nobody spoke.
I reached for the envelope.
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Inside was one page.
Only a few sentences.
But they were enough.
*Emily, if you are reading this, it means the truth survived.*
I swallowed.
The next line made my heart stop.
*Mia was never supposed to be hidden from you. She was supposed to be protected until the right time.*
I looked at Adrian.
Then continued reading.
*But there is something you must know. The person who started this was never your father.*
My eyes moved to the final sentence.
And suddenly, every person in the room went silent.
Because my mother had written a name.
A name none of us expected.
*The person who wanted Mia erased was someone still alive and close to your family.*
Below it was a signature.
And one final warning.
*Do not trust Vanessa. Do not trust anyone who says they are protecting her.*
I slowly lowered the paper.
Everyone stared at me.
Because the letter had just destroyed the one thing we thought we knew.
Vanessa wasn’t the biggest secret.
She was only the beginning.
And then Adrian’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face turned pale.
“What?””
I watched him listen.
Then he stood.
“What do you mean she’s gone?””
My heart stopped.
“Mia?””
He looked at me.
His voice barely came out.
“The school security system just sent an alert.””
Everyone froze.
Adrian whispered:
“Someone picked up Mia’s school records.””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“And they used my name to authorize it.””
