Chapter 3: The Secret Behind Vanessa’s Cruelty
The photo loaded slowly.
For a few seconds, all I could see was a blurry image.
Then the details became clear.
My breath caught.
It was a picture of Mia.
But not from the birthday party.
It was taken two weeks earlier.
Mia was sitting at a small table in our living room, surrounded by colored pencils, papers, and her favorite stuffed rabbit. She was smiling at something outside the frame.
At first, I didn’t understand why someone would send us this.
Then I noticed the person standing behind her.
Vanessa.
My fingers went cold.
“She was in our house?””
Adrian stared at the screen.
His face had gone completely serious.
“That’s not possible.””
But it was.
The photo was real.
And the timestamp was real.
Two weeks earlier.
The same day Vanessa had visited us for dinner.
I remembered that evening.
She had arrived carrying a cake for Mia.
She had hugged our daughter.
She had acted like the perfect aunt.
I remembered thinking how happy Mia was that Vanessa had finally started making an effort.
Now, looking at the picture, everything felt different.
Because Vanessa wasn’t smiling.
She was watching Mia.
Studying her.
And there was something unsettling about the way she looked.
“What is this?”” I whispered.
Adrian didn’t answer.
He zoomed in.
Behind Vanessa, on the counter, was a small notebook.
A notebook I recognized.
My stomach tightened.
“That’s mine.””
Adrian looked at me.
“What?””
“That notebook.””
I pointed at the screen.
“I keep important documents in there.””
He looked back at the image.
The notebook was partially hidden under a stack of papers.
The photo wasn’t random.
Someone had taken it intentionally.
Someone wanted us to notice something.
Then another message appeared.
*Look closer. She wasn’t trying to hurt Mia. She was trying to stop Mia from finding out the truth.*
My heart started pounding.
“What truth?””
Adrian shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
The phone buzzed again.
Another message.
*Ask Vanessa why she searched your house that night.*
The room suddenly felt colder.
Because that was the first time the possibility entered my mind.
Vanessa hadn’t ruined Mia’s dress because of jealousy.
Not only because of jealousy.
There was something else.
Something she was hiding.
Adrian stood up immediately.
“I’m calling her.””
I grabbed his arm.
“Wait.””
He looked at me.
“Why?””
“Because if she knows we have this message, she’ll know someone exposed her.””
He was silent.
I could see the anger building inside him.
But underneath it was something else.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For Mia.
The next morning, Adrian asked Vanessa to meet us.
Not at our house.
Not at hers.
At a quiet coffee shop downtown.
Somewhere public.
Somewhere she couldn’t create another scene.
I barely slept the night before.
My mind kept replaying everything.
Vanessa pouring frosting onto Mia’s dress.
Vanessa lying.
Vanessa watching my daughter in that photograph.
And the question I couldn’t escape:
What did Mia know?
When Vanessa arrived, she looked different.
The confidence from the birthday party was gone.
She walked into the café wearing sunglasses and carrying a large handbag.
She saw us immediately.
Then she smiled.
Not warmly.
Carefully.
“I knew you’d come.””
Adrian didn’t stand.
“Sit down.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You sound like you’re angry.””
He stared at her.
“I am.””
She slowly sat across from us.
“I suppose this is about the video.””
I placed my hands on the table.
“No. It’s about the fact that you lied.””
Vanessa sighed.
“I already apologized.””
“No, you didn’t,” I said.
She looked at me.
“You want me to say sorry for spilling frosting?””
My jaw tightened.
“No. I want you to say sorry for making an eight-year-old child believe nobody would believe her.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
Only for a second.
Then she recovered.
“You’re being dramatic.””
Adrian pushed his phone across the table.
The photo was open.
Vanessa looked down.
And everything changed.
Her face went pale.
Not shocked.
Not confused.
Afraid.
“You got this where?””
Adrian leaned back.
“That’s not your first question?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
She stared at the image.
Then whispered:
“You need to delete this.””
The words sent a chill through me.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked up.
“Because you don’t understand what you’re looking at.””
“Then explain.””
She looked around the café.
Several seconds passed.
Then she lowered her voice.
“I was trying to protect Mia.””
I almost laughed.
“Protect her?””
“Yes.””
“By ruining her birthday?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“That was not supposed to happen.””
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“But it did.””
She looked at him.
“I made a mistake.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“You made a choice.””
Vanessa looked down.
For a moment, she looked almost guilty.
Then she said something I never expected.
“Mia found something.””
The air seemed to disappear.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“She found something in your house.””
I frowned.
“Mia?””
“Yes.””
“That makes no sense.””
Vanessa leaned forward.
“She showed me a piece of paper when I visited.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What paper?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I don’t know exactly. She said she found it in a drawer.””
I stared at her.
“Mia doesn’t go through our documents.””
“She didn’t understand what it was.””
Vanessa paused.
“But she knew it had your names on it.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What was written on it?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I don’t know.””
Adrian hit the table lightly.
“Vanessa.””
She flinched.
“I’m telling you the truth.””
“That’s hard to believe.””
“I know.””
The admission surprised all of us.
Vanessa took off her sunglasses.
For the first time, I saw something behind her usual arrogance.
Panic.
“I should have told you earlier.””
“Yes,” Adrian said.
“You should have.””
She looked at him.
“But if I told you, everything would have fallen apart.””
A terrible feeling settled in my stomach.
“What would have fallen apart?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Instead, she reached into her handbag.
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
She placed it on the table.
“I took this from your house that night.””
My eyes widened.
“You stole from us?””
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
Adrian immediately grabbed the paper.
But before opening it, he looked at her.
“Why?””
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“Because I knew someone was looking for it.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then she said:
“Someone who doesn’t want Mia to know who her real family is.””
The words hit like a storm.
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at Adrian.
And the expression on her face told me she had been carrying this secret for a long time.
“Adrian…”
He froze.
“What?””
She pushed the paper toward him.
“Before you read that, you need to understand something.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Mia’s birthday party wasn’t ruined because I hated her dress.””
She looked directly at me.
“I ruined that moment because I was trying to stop someone from taking her away from you.””
The paper trembled slightly under Adrian’s hand.
He unfolded it.
The first line was enough to make his face lose all color.
Because it wasn’t a birthday invitation.
It wasn’t a random document.
It was a legal notice.
