Amused

Chapter 7: The Woman Who Held Mia First

The word on the file stared back at us.

Adoption.

For a moment, nobody understood.

Or maybe we understood too quickly and our minds refused to accept it.

Linda stood beside the table with a calm expression that felt completely out of place.

Everyone else looked terrified.

Vanessa looked like she wanted to disappear.

Adrian looked like the ground beneath him had opened.

And me?

I could only think about one thing.

Mia.

My little girl.

The child I had carried.

The child whose first steps I remembered.

The child whose nightmares I comforted.

The child who called me Mommy.

My hand tightened around my phone.

Rachel was still connected.

“Who is that?”” she asked.

Nobody answered.

Linda slowly pulled out the chair across from us.

“May I sit?””

Adrian stared at her.

“You knew.””

It wasn’t a question.

Linda lowered her eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

After all the lies.

After all the secrets.

I almost didn’t know what to do with someone simply admitting something.

“You knew about Mia?”” Adrian asked.

Linda nodded.

“I knew before she was born.””

His face changed.

“Who are you?””

Linda took a breath.

“My name is Linda Carter.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You’re Rachel’s aunt.””

Linda nodded.

“And I was there the night Mia was born.””

The café became silent.

Rachel’s voice came through the phone.

“Linda?””

The woman closed her eyes.

Hearing Rachel’s voice seemed to break something inside her.

“Yes.””

“Why are you there?””

Linda looked at the file.

“Because it’s time.””

Rachel’s breathing became uneven.

“No.””

Linda looked toward the phone.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Rachel’s voice rose.

“You promised me.””

A heavy silence followed.

I looked at Adrian.

“What is happening?””

Linda folded her hands.

“I made mistakes.””

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“That’s a convenient way to describe destroying someone’s life.””

Linda accepted the anger.

“I deserve that.””

“Did you help hide my daughter?””

The question hung in the air.

Linda didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“Yes.””

Adrian stood.

The chair scraped against the floor.

“Why?””

Linda looked at him.

“Because I thought I was protecting her.””

“From what?””

She looked at the adoption file.

“From a man who wanted to use her as a weapon.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Linda looked at Adrian.

“Your father.””

Even though we had heard it before, hearing it again felt like another wound opening.

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

Linda reached into the file.

She pulled out several pages.

“Your father found out Rachel was pregnant.””

Adrian stared at the papers.

“He offered me money.””

Linda’s voice was quiet.

“He told me he wanted the baby placed somewhere safe.””

Rachel interrupted through the phone.

“You told me Adrian didn’t want her.””

Linda closed her eyes.

“I know.””

The pain in Rachel’s voice was immediate.

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

Nobody defended her.

Because she didn’t defend herself.

“I thought I was helping,” Linda whispered.

Rachel laughed sadly.

“You took my baby.””

“I thought I was saving her.””

“You separated me from my daughter.””

The words were quiet.

But they carried more pain than shouting ever could.

Linda looked down.

“I know.””

Adrian grabbed the papers.

“Wait.””

He flipped through them.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Linda looked at him.

“The adoption agreement.””

His eyes moved across the page.

Then widened.

“This isn’t legal.””

I looked at the document.

“What?””

Adrian handed it to Daniel.

Daniel scanned it quickly.

“You’re right.””

He looked at Linda.

“This was never finalized.””

Linda nodded.

“No.””

“Then what happened?””

Linda looked toward the window.

“She was supposed to be placed temporarily.””

Adrian’s voice hardened.

“Temporarily?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Linda’s silence answered before she did.

“With me.””

The room froze.

I stared at her.

“You raised Mia?””

Linda shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I cared for her for three months.””

Three months.

A lifetime for a newborn.

A lifetime for someone who had held her first.

“What happened after that?””

Linda’s expression changed.

“Your father changed his mind.””

Adrian frowned.

“About what?””

“About keeping the arrangement quiet.””

Daniel looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Linda pulled out another document.

“This.””

She placed it on the table.

It was an old letter.

The handwriting was faded.

But one sentence was clear.

*The child must never be connected to Adrian Whitmore.*

Adrian read it twice.

Then looked up.

“Who wrote this?””

Linda looked at him.

“Your father.””

The silence after that was unbearable.

Adrian sat down slowly.

Like he had finally run out of strength.

“My whole life…”

He stopped.

I reached for him.

This time, he let me.

But I still had questions.

“So how did Mia become ours?””

Linda looked at me.

“That’s the part nobody knows.””

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Linda continued.

“After your father realized the adoption wasn’t complete, he tried to move Mia somewhere else.””

Rachel’s voice became urgent.

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

“Linda.””

“I swear.””

She looked at Rachel.

“I don’t know.””

She turned to Adrian.

“But someone stopped him.””

“Who?””

Linda looked at me.

And my heart dropped.

“Your mother.””

I blinked.

“My mother?””

I barely knew what she meant.

My mother had passed away when I was young.

She had never met Mia.

She had never even known Adrian.

“That’s impossible.””

Linda shook her head.

“No.””

“How?””

“Because your mother was the person who found the truth.””

Everyone went silent.

I felt dizzy.

“My mother?””

Linda nodded.

“She worked with your father’s company.””

I shook my head.

“No, she didn’t.””

“She did.””

“She never told me.””

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Linda looked at the folder.

“Of what would happen if the truth came out.””

A terrible thought entered my mind.

“Are you saying my mother was involved in Mia coming to us?””

Linda nodded.

“Yes.””

My eyes filled with tears.

I didn’t know if I felt relief.

Anger.

Confusion.

Everything at once.

Adrian looked at me.

“Emily…”

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

Linda opened the file again.

“There’s more.””

Everyone looked at her.

She removed one final page.

“This is the original placement record.””

Daniel took it.

Then froze.

“What?””

He looked at Adrian.

Then at me.

“This has both your names.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Adrian looked confused.

“We weren’t together.””

Linda nodded.

“I know.””

She pointed at the date.

“This was created before you and Adrian ever met.””

The room went silent.

“That’s impossible,” Adrian whispered.

Linda looked at him.

“Unless someone knew you two would find each other.””

A chill ran down my spine.

No.

That didn’t make sense.

It couldn’t.

But then Daniel noticed something.

He grabbed the paper.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

“There’s a signature.””

He pointed.

Not Linda.

Not Rachel.

Not Adrian.

Not my mother.

A different name.

A name that none of us expected.

Vanessa.

I turned slowly.

“Vanessa?””

She had been silent the entire time.

Too silent.

Her face had lost all color.

Adrian looked at her.

“You signed this?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know what it was.””

“That’s not possible.””

“I was young.””

“You were there?””

She looked at him.

“Yes.””

“When?””

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“The day Mia came home.””

The words shocked everyone.

I stared at her.

“You knew my daughter before I did?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I knew she existed.””

Adrian stood.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because your father made me promise.””

“Promise what?””

She whispered:

“To protect Mia.””

A phone suddenly buzzed.

Not mine.

Not Adrian’s.

Vanessa’s.

She looked at the screen.

And the fear returned.

“What is it?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

She slowly turned the phone toward us.

A message appeared.

*You were warned not to talk. Now everyone will know what you did.*

Vanessa’s hands began shaking.

Then another message arrived.

This time, with a photo attached.

A photo of Mia.

Taken that morning.

Outside her school.

My blood went cold.

May you like

Because beneath the picture was a single sentence:

*If you want your daughter safe, stop looking for the truth.*
