Chapter 8: The Sister Hidden From Me
For several minutes, I couldn’t move.
The message remained on my phone.
*It was me.*
Three words from a stranger who claimed to be my sister.
A person my father never mentioned.
A person who somehow knew exactly when to reveal herself.
A person who knew about Marcus.
About the trust.
About the secrets buried beneath my entire life.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked like a man standing in the middle of a storm he had spent years trying to prevent.
“Tell me this isn’t true.””
My voice sounded smaller than I wanted.
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
That was the worst answer he could have given me.
“Daniel.””
He closed his eyes briefly.
“Emma…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I need you to say something.””
He sat down slowly.
“Your father had a daughter before he met your mother.””
The words landed harder than I expected.
“Before my mother?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked toward the phone.
“The woman who contacted you.””
My hands felt cold.
“What is her name?””
“Clara.””
I repeated it silently.
Clara.
A name that belonged to someone who had never existed in my world.
“Why didn’t I know?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because your father made a decision.””
“What decision?””
“To protect you.””
I almost laughed.
It wasn’t a happy laugh.
It was the kind that came when something hurt too much.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I stood up.
“My father protected me.””
Daniel watched me.
“But who protected me from the truth?””
He didn’t argue.
Because he knew.
My whole life had been built around carefully hidden truths.
I thought my biggest secret was the trust.
The company.
The money.
But now I was discovering the biggest secret was my own family.
I walked toward the window.
Outside, the gardens were dark.
The same gardens where my father taught me how to ride a bicycle.
Where he held my hand when I was afraid of thunderstorms.
Where he told me family meant never standing alone.
But he had hidden someone from me.
Someone who was family.
“Tell me everything.””
Daniel was quiet.
“Emma—”
“No.””
I turned around.
“Not another protection speech. Not another explanation about why someone decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””
My voice broke.
“I can handle it.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Your father met Clara’s mother when he was very young.””
I listened.
“Before the company. Before your mother.””
“Did my mother know?””
“Yes.””
That surprised me.
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t I?””
Daniel sighed.
“Because they both agreed.””
I felt something inside me collapse.
“My parents agreed to hide this?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at the documents.
“Because Clara’s mother disappeared after a difficult relationship with your father. There were legal issues. Custody issues.””
“And Clara?””
“She was raised away from the family.””
I stared at him.
“That doesn’t explain why my father never told me.””
Daniel hesitated.
Then said:
“Because he believed Clara was in danger.””
“From who?””
His silence answered before his words did.
“Richard Whitmore.””
The room went quiet.
Again.
That name.
Always that name.
Marcus’s uncle.
The person connected to every hidden piece of this story.
“What does Richard have to do with my sister?””
Daniel opened another file.
“Your father discovered that Richard had been investigating the Ellison family for years.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard believed there was another heir.””
I looked at the phone.
Clara.
“Me and Clara.””
“Yes.””
“Why would that matter?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because your grandfather’s original trust was designed around bloodline succession.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means control of certain assets could not be transferred without both heirs being accounted for.””
I stared.
“So Marcus wasn’t looking for my inheritance.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not exactly.””
“Then what?””
“He was looking for Clara.””
The words made no sense.
“Why?””
“Because if he found her first, he could influence the succession.””
I felt sick.
“And he married me because…”
Daniel answered quietly.
“Because you were the only heir he could reach.””
I sat down.
All the memories came rushing back.
Marcus asking about my childhood.
My family.
My father’s business.
At the time, I thought he was interested because he cared.
Now I wondered how many questions had been research.
How many conversations had been investigations.
My phone buzzed.
Another message from Clara.
*I know you hate me right now.*
I stared.
Then another.
*You probably think I am another secret your father kept from you.*
Another.
*But I didn’t choose to disappear.*
I hesitated.
Then typed.
*Why contact me now?*
The reply came quickly.
*Because Marcus found me.*
My heart stopped.
I looked at Daniel.
“What?””
He stood.
“What happened?””
I showed him.
His face changed immediately.
“Call her.””
I pressed the call button.
It rang once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then a woman answered.
“Emma.””
Her voice was exactly like the messages.
Careful.
Tired.
Like someone who had been carrying a burden for years.
“Who are you?””
A pause.
“I already told you.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I need to hear it.””
Silence.
Then:
“I’m Clara Ellison.””
My eyes closed.
My sister.
A stranger.
My family.
“Why didn’t you tell me before?””
She exhaled.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of me?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
“Marcus.””
I stood.
“Why?””
Her voice became quieter.
“Because he found me three years ago.””
The room became silent.
“Three years?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
“Because he wasn’t sure what I knew.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What did you know?””
Clara hesitated.
“Your father left something with me.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What?””
“A copy of the original trust documents.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“He gave them to you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew someone might try to use Emma.””
I sat down.
Everything connected.
The trust.
The hidden heir.
The documents.
Marcus’s obsession with information.
“What does Marcus want?””
Clara was silent.
Then:
“The same thing he has always wanted.””
“Power?””
“No.””
Her voice became cold.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That he belongs.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Clara answered:
“Marcus doesn’t just want the company.””
A pause.
“He wants to prove your father was wrong about him.””
I looked down.
That sounded painfully familiar.
Marcus had spent years trying to become someone.
Not just rich.
Not just successful.
Important.
My father had seen that hunger.
And maybe Marcus hated him for seeing it.
“Clara,” I said softly.
“Yes?””
“Did Marcus hurt you?””
The silence lasted too long.
Then:
“He tried.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“He offered me money to disappear.””
My eyes widened.
“When?””
“Two years ago.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Did you refuse?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
A sad laugh came through the phone.
“Because I spent my entire life being invisible.””
Her voice cracked.
“I wasn’t going to let Marcus make me disappear again.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Because for the first time, I understood.
Clara wasn’t my enemy.
She was another person damaged by the same man.
Then she said:
“Emma, you need to know something.””
“What?””
“Marcus doesn’t believe you know the full truth.””
I frowned.
“What truth?””
“The trust isn’t the only thing your father left you.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What else?””
Clara’s voice dropped.
“A recording.””
My heart skipped.
“Another one?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“With me.””
The room went silent.
“Why didn’t you give it to my father’s lawyer?””
“Because I wasn’t sure who I could trust.””
That was a sentence I understood more than I wanted.
“Clara.””
“Yes?””
“Can I see you?””
A long pause.
Then:
“Yes.””
“Where?””
She hesitated.
“Not at the estate.””
“Why?””
“Because someone has been watching this house.””
Daniel immediately looked toward the windows.
My pulse quickened.
“Who?””
Clara whispered:
“Marcus.””
I felt the room shift.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because he isn’t the only person who has been searching for the trust.””
A pause.
“His uncle is involved.””
Richard.
Again.
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded.
“We need to move carefully.””
Clara continued.
“Emma, there’s something else.””
“What?””
“Marcus knows about Lily.””
My blood ran cold.
“What about her?””
“He knows she changes everything.””
I looked at my daughter.
“What do you mean?””
Clara’s voice became almost a whisper.
“Because Lily is not just your child.””
I froze.
“She is the next protected heir.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“What?””
“The trust has a succession clause.””
Daniel moved closer.
“Clara, how do you know that?””
“Because I read the original documents.””
A pause.
“Emma, if anything happens to you, Lily becomes the key to everything.””
My hands tightened around the phone.
Then Clara said the sentence that made my heart stop.
“Marcus didn’t throw you out because he wanted you gone.””
Silence.
“He threw you out because he needed you scared.””
I looked at the dark window.
At the reflection of myself holding my newborn daughter.
Then my phone lit up.
A new message.
From Marcus.
Not words.
A photo.
My house.
Taken from outside.
May you like
And underneath it:
*We need to talk about Lily.*
