Amused

Chapter 5: The Marriage That Was a Contract

I stared at the message until the screen dimmed.

Then I tapped it again.

*He married you for a reason.*

Six words.

Six words that made eight years of memories feel like a carefully constructed illusion.

The driver continued down the dark road toward my family’s estate, but I barely noticed the passing streets.

My mind was somewhere else.

Back at the beginning.

The first time I met Marcus.

The first time he smiled at me.

The first time he told me I was different from everyone else.

At the time, I thought those words meant I was special.

Now I wondered if they meant I was useful.

My daughter moved slightly in my arms.

I immediately looked down.

“Hey, Lily.””

My voice cracked.

“I’m right here.””

She opened her tiny eyes for a second.

That was enough.

Enough to remind me that whatever happened next, I was not alone.

The driver pulled into the Ellison family estate thirty minutes later.

The house looked exactly the same.

White stone walls.

Old oak trees lining the driveway.

The fountain my father restored when I was a child.

It was the place where I grew up.

The place Marcus always called “beautiful but outdated.””

He preferred modern buildings.

Glass.

Steel.

Things that looked expensive.

My father always said a home should have memories, not just a price tag.

I never understood how much wisdom was hidden in those simple sentences.

Until tonight.

The front door opened before I reached it.

Daniel stood there.

He was in his late sixties, with silver hair and the same serious expression he always wore during business meetings.

But tonight, he didn’t look like a lawyer.

He looked like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.

“Emma.””

I walked toward him.

And for the first time all night, I let myself break.

Not completely.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

Daniel carefully took the box containing my father’s ashes from my hands.

“You shouldn’t be carrying this.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

He looked at me.

“You always were too much like your father.””

A sad smile appeared.

“Stubborn.””

I almost laughed.

“My father would agree.””

“He would.””

The silence that followed was painful.

Because my father should have been there.

He should have met Lily.

He should have held her.

He should have told Marcus exactly what he thought of tonight.

Instead, he left behind documents and warnings.

And a daughter who finally understood why he had been afraid.

Inside the house, Daniel guided me into the library.

Nothing had changed.

The room smelled like old books and cedar wood.

My father’s favorite place.

There was still a chair by the window where he would sit every morning with coffee and financial reports.

I placed Lily in the nearby crib Daniel had prepared.

“You had a crib ready?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your father planned for everything.””

I looked at him.

“Did he plan for Marcus?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

“Tell me everything.””

Daniel sat across from me.

“Emma, before I say anything, I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“Your father loved you more than anything.””

I looked down.

“I know.””

“No,” Daniel said gently.

“You know he loved you. But you don’t know how terrified he was of losing you.””

My throat tightened.

“Why?””

“Because Marcus was not the only person your father investigated.””

I waited.

Daniel opened a folder.

Inside were documents.

Reports.

Financial records.

Photographs.

My stomach tightened.

“How long?””

“Six months before your engagement.””

I stared at him.

“My engagement?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at the papers.

“Because your father noticed something unusual.””

“What?””

“Marcus appeared in your life at a very convenient time.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t mean anything.””

“No.””

Daniel nodded.

“It doesn’t.””

The way he said it bothered me.

Because he wasn’t accusing.

He was presenting facts.

“Your father didn’t believe Marcus married you because of money.””

I looked up.

“He didn’t?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

Daniel pushed one document toward me.

“Because Marcus was ambitious.””

I read the page.

It was a timeline.

Marcus meeting me.

Marcus becoming involved with Ellison Holdings.

Marcus receiving executive access.

My engagement.

The expansion of the company.

Everything was organized by date.

And then I saw something that made my hands go cold.

A name.

A woman.

“Who is Evelyn Cross?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“She was Marcus’s financial advisor before you met.””

I looked at the page.

“She introduced him to my father?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“That’s what your father wanted to know.””

I looked through more documents.

There were emails.

Meeting records.

Transfers.

But one thing kept appearing.

A company name.

*Cross Advisory Group.*

“Is this connected to the missing money?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

I looked up.

“And Marcus?””

“We don’t know everything yet.””

“But you suspect him.””

Daniel leaned back.

“We suspect Marcus knew more than he admitted.””

The room became silent.

I looked at my daughter.

My beautiful little girl.

Born into a family full of secrets.

“Why didn’t my father stop the wedding?””

Daniel looked at me sadly.

“Because he made a mistake.””

I froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“He thought if Marcus truly loved you, he would choose you over power.””

I closed my eyes.

That sounded exactly like my father.

He always believed people could choose better.

Even when they had already shown who they were.

“And did Marcus?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The answer was sitting in my phone.

The mansion.

The other woman.

The packed bags.

I picked up the folder again.

“There’s something I don’t understand.””

“What?””

“The photo.””

I showed him the picture from the unknown sender.

Marcus and my father.

Six months before the wedding.

Daniel looked at it carefully.

His expression changed.

“Where did you get this?””

“Someone sent it.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel studied the image.

Then he looked closer.

“Emma.””

“What?””

“This wasn’t taken six months before your wedding.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel pointed.

“Look at the date.””

I checked.

My breathing stopped.

The date was wrong.

Not six months before.

Two weeks after my wedding.

My hands went numb.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“This changes everything.””

I stared at the picture.

Marcus and my father.

After I was already married.

After Marcus became part of the family.

After he promised to love me forever.

“What were they discussing?””

Daniel opened another file.

“I was hoping you could tell me.””

I looked at him.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

He placed another document on the table.

A contract.

Not the marriage protection agreement.

Something else.

The same document from the photograph.

The one with my signature.

The one I had never seen.

I picked it up.

The title made my heart stop.

*Spousal Transfer Agreement.*

I read the first line.

And immediately felt sick.

Because it stated that upon marriage, certain family assets would be transferred into a shared management structure.

Shared.

That was the word.

But beneath it was another section.

One I had never known existed.

A hidden clause.

A clause that required Marcus to maintain full transparency regarding company finances.

And if he failed?

The agreement would become active.

Daniel watched me read.

“Emma.””

I looked up.

“Why didn’t I know about this?””

“Because you weren’t supposed to sign it.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“This document was created as a test.””

“A test?””

“Yes.””

“For Marcus?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your father wanted to know if Marcus would tell you about it.””

I stared at the paper.

“He didn’t.””

“No.””

“Then why did I sign?””

Daniel’s face became serious.

“Because someone forged your signature.””

The room went completely silent.

I looked at the signature.

Mine.

Or something pretending to be mine.

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, my phone rang.

The unknown number.

I answered immediately.

No greeting.

No introduction.

Just a voice.

A woman’s voice.

“Emma.””

I stood.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Someone who worked for Marcus before you ever knew him.””

I looked at Daniel.

He immediately started recording the call.

The woman continued.

“I tried to tell your father the truth.””

“What truth?””

Her voice became quieter.

“The truth about why Marcus chose you.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

A long silence.

Then she said:

“Because you were the only person who could unlock your father’s entire fortune.””

I stopped breathing.

“That’s impossible.””

“No, Emma.””

Her voice shook.

“He didn’t marry you because he loved your money.””

A pause.

“He married you because he needed your bloodline.””

I felt a chill move through me.

“What are you talking about?””

The woman whispered:

“Your father never told you what you inherited.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked just as shocked.

Then the woman said the words that changed everything.

“Emma, you are not just the heir to Ellison Holdings.””

A pause.

“You are the legal owner of something Marcus has spent eight years trying to find.””

The call suddenly went silent.

“Hello?””

No response.

“Hello?””

Then one final message appeared on my screen.

Not from the woman.

From Marcus.

May you like

Three words.

*We need to talk.*
