Amused

Chapter 4: The Secret Behind the Perfect Husband

The word *evidence* stayed in the room long after Daniel stopped speaking.

It was strange how one word could change the weight of everything.

A few hours ago, I thought my marriage had ended because Marcus had fallen in love with someone else.

I thought the worst thing he had done was betrayal.

The affair.

The humiliation.

The cruelty of throwing me out three days after giving birth to our daughter.

But Daniel’s voice told me there was something underneath.

Something older.

Something I had never seen.

Marcus looked at me carefully.

“Don’t listen to him.””

The speed of his response told me more than his words.

He was afraid.

Not angry.

Not offended.

Afraid.

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Why?””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“Because Daniel has always hated me.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

“Has he?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

That was becoming a pattern.

Marcus always had an explanation when he was winning.

When he was losing, he had silence.

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Emma, I think you need to leave the house before we continue.””

Marcus immediately reacted.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“No?””

“You’re not taking my daughter anywhere.””

The room went cold.

Not because of what he said.

Because of how quickly he said it.

Like Lily was a possession.

Like he had already forgotten she was a person.

My daughter.

Our daughter.

A tiny human being who had spent three days fighting her way into the world.

I stared at him.

“You just told me to leave with her.””

His face changed.

“I didn’t mean—”

“You pointed at the door.””

“Emma.””

“You packed my things.””

“I was angry.””

“You put my father’s ashes in a box.””

His mouth closed.

That was the one thing even he couldn’t defend.

Daniel interrupted.

“Emma, listen to me carefully. Do not argue with him about custody tonight.””

Marcus looked at the phone.

“Don’t tell her what to do.””

Daniel ignored him.

“Your priority is your health and the baby’s safety.””

I looked down at Lily.

Her eyes were still closed.

She had no idea the two people who created her were standing on opposite sides of a war.

“Where should I go?””

Daniel answered immediately.

“The family residence.””

I almost laughed.

“My father’s old house?””

“Yes.””

I looked toward the windows.

The gardens outside belonged to the Whitmore estate.

At least, that was what everyone believed.

But suddenly, this place felt like a hotel room I had overstayed in.

“Okay.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You’re leaving?””

I looked at him.

“You asked me to.””

His face tightened.

“That’s not what I meant.””

“Then what did you mean?””

He had no answer.

Again.

Vanessa moved closer to him.

“Marcus, maybe we should talk privately.””

I looked at her.

The confidence she had when I first walked in was gone.

She no longer looked like a woman who had won.

She looked like someone realizing she had entered a situation she didn’t understand.

Marcus glanced at her.

Then at me.

“Emma, don’t do something you’ll regret.””

I almost smiled.

“Regret?””

“Yes.””

He lowered his voice.

“You’re emotional right now.””

There it was.

The excuse.

The one people used when they wanted to dismiss a woman’s pain.

I looked at my newborn daughter.

Then back at him.

“Marcus, I had major surgery three days ago. I am exhausted. I am in pain.””

I stepped closer.

“But I am not confused.””

His eyes moved away.

For years, I thought Marcus’s greatest strength was his confidence.

Now I realized something.

Confidence was easy when nobody challenged you.

The front door opened twenty minutes later.

Daniel’s assistant arrived with a security team.

Not police.

Not threatening.

Just professionals.

And somehow, that made Marcus more uncomfortable.

Because they didn’t treat him like a powerful businessman.

They treated him like someone who no longer had control.

One of the men approached.

“Mrs. Ellison, your vehicle is ready.””

Marcus heard the name.

Mrs. Ellison.

Not Mrs. Whitmore.

His expression changed.

“You’re still using that name?””

I looked at him.

“My family name?””

“Yes.””

“Why wouldn’t I?””

He looked frustrated.

Because he had spent years believing my identity began when I married him.

It didn’t.

I had simply forgotten how much of myself I had given away.

Before I left, I stopped near the staircase.

The suitcases were still there.

I looked at them.

Then at the box containing my father’s ashes.

Marcus followed my eyes.

“Emma…”

I picked up the box carefully.

My abdomen protested immediately.

Pain shot through me.

I hid it.

I refused to let him see.

Not tonight.

Not anymore.

Marcus noticed anyway.

His face changed.

For one second, I saw the man I married.

The man who would have helped me sit down.

The man who would have carried anything heavy for me.

Then that moment disappeared.

Because the man who loved me was fighting against the man who wanted power.

And I no longer knew which one would win.

I turned away.

As I stepped outside, Daniel called again.

“Emma.””

“Yes?””

“There is something you need to prepare yourself for.””

I looked back at the mansion.

Marcus stood in the doorway.

Vanessa beside him.

The two people who thought they had replaced me.

“What?””

Daniel’s voice softened.

“Your father didn’t only investigate Marcus.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“He investigated everyone close to him.””

A chill moved through me.

“Why?””

“Because years ago, your father discovered financial irregularities.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Marcus?””

A pause.

“No.””

That answer scared me more.

“Then who?””

Daniel didn’t respond immediately.

The delay told me it was serious.

“Emma, before you married Marcus, your father found evidence that someone inside the company was moving money.””

I looked back at Marcus.

He was watching me.

But I couldn’t tell if he was worried about me.

Or worried about what I might discover.

“How much?””

“Millions.””

The cold night air hit my face.

“Did Marcus know?””

Daniel was silent.

I understood.

“That’s what you’re trying to find out.””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

My father had spent years protecting me from something.

And I had spent years believing I was protecting Marcus by staying quiet.

The irony was painful.

“Why didn’t my father tell me?””

Daniel sighed.

“Because he wanted you to have a chance at happiness.””

I looked at Lily.

“And now?””

“Now he wanted you to have a chance at freedom.””

The words stayed with me.

Freedom.

Not revenge.

Not victory.

Freedom.

I got into the car.

The mansion became smaller behind me.

But before we drove away, my phone received a message.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Almost.

Then I saw the attachment.

A photograph.

My blood turned cold.

It was a picture of Marcus.

But not with Vanessa.

Not at a party.

Not at a business event.

It was Marcus sitting across from my father.

The date was six months before our wedding.

Underneath the picture was a message.

*You think your husband betrayed you three days ago?*

Another message appeared.

*You have no idea what happened the night before your wedding.*

I stared at the screen.

My hands went numb.

I typed one word.

*Who are you?*

The reply came instantly.

*Someone who tried to warn your father.*

A second message followed.

*Someone Marcus thought he destroyed.*

I looked up.

The driver glanced at me through the mirror.

“Mrs. Ellison?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because another photo had arrived.

This one was worse.

It showed Marcus.

My father.

And a document between them.

A document with a signature.

A signature I recognized.

Mine.

But I had never signed it.

May you like

And beneath the picture were six words that made my entire body go cold.

*He married you for a reason.*
