Amused

Chapter 3: The Letter My Father Hid

I stared at my father’s handwriting until the words blurred.

Not because I couldn’t read them.

Because I could.

Every letter was familiar.

Every curve.

Every sharp line where he pressed too hard with his pen.

My father always wrote like he was racing against time.

Even grocery lists looked like urgent business plans.

But this sentence wasn’t a note.

It was a warning.

*“If you are reading this, Marcus has finally shown you who he really is.””*

My fingers trembled as I touched the paper.

Seven years ago.

That was impossible.

I had never seen this document.

I had never known this agreement existed.

And yet my signature was sitting at the bottom.

Marcus stood several feet away, staring at the folder like it contained a weapon.

Maybe to him, it did.

“What is that?”” he asked.

His voice was quieter now.

Not angry.

Not commanding.

Afraid.

I looked up.

“The truth.””

He shook his head.

“No. You’re hiding something.””

I almost laughed.

After everything he had done, he still believed I was the one hiding secrets.

“Marcus, you are the one who spent years pretending to own something you didn’t.””

His face tightened.

“You knew.””

The accusation came quickly.

“You knew everything.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because unlike you, I actually trusted the person I married.””

The words hit him.

I saw it.

A small movement in his eyes.

A flicker of guilt.

But it disappeared almost instantly.

Marcus had always been good at hiding things.

Especially from himself.

Daniel spoke through the phone.

“Emma, do you have the folder?””

“Yes.””

“Open it.””

I hesitated.

For some reason, that scared me more than facing Marcus.

Because I knew my father.

I knew he loved me.

I knew he would do anything to protect me.

But I also knew he had a habit of carrying burdens alone.

If he created this agreement seven years ago, he had seen something I had not.

I opened the folder.

The first page contained legal language.

Ownership protections.

Marriage conditions.

Family trust provisions.

But the second page was different.

It wasn’t written by lawyers.

It was a letter.

My father’s letter.

My breathing became shallow.

“Emma,” Daniel said gently.

“Read it.””

I unfolded the paper.

The ink was slightly faded.

But his voice seemed alive in my head.

My dearest Emma,

I stopped.

For a moment, I was no longer standing in that mansion.

I was twelve years old, sitting beside him in his office while he explained why honesty mattered more than success.

I was twenty-one, crying after my first heartbreak while he brought me ice cream at midnight.

I was twenty-seven, introducing Marcus to him and watching my father force a smile because he wanted to believe my happiness was real.

I continued reading.

If this letter has been opened, it means something happened that I hoped would never happen.

My eyes moved lower.

I want you to know something first: I never wanted to control your life.

A tear slipped down my cheek.

You are my daughter, not my possession. Your choices belong to you. Your love belongs to you. Your future belongs to you.

I swallowed.

Then I read the next line.

But protection is different from control.

My grip tightened.

*When Marcus entered your life, I saw what you saw. Intelligence. Confidence.

Ambition. Charm.*

A cold feeling moved through me.

But I also saw something you could not see because you loved him.

The room became silent.

Even Marcus stopped moving.

Marcus does not understand the difference between building something and owning something.

I looked at my husband.

His face was pale.

He believes power comes from being seen as powerful. He believes respect comes from making others smaller.

My heart pounded.

Because my father had written those words before Marcus ever threw me out.

Before Vanessa.

Before tonight.

I hope I am wrong.

The sentence hurt more than anything.

Because my father wasn’t writing from hatred.

He was writing from fear.

I hope Marcus proves me wrong every day for the rest of your marriage.

I lowered the letter slightly.

Then came the final paragraph.

But if he ever uses your love as a weakness, if he ever believes your kindness means you are powerless, then activate this agreement without hesitation.

I closed my eyes.

My father knew.

Maybe not every detail.

Maybe not this exact moment.

But he knew enough.

“Emma?””

Daniel’s voice brought me back.

“I’m here.””

“There is another page.””

I turned it over.

My stomach dropped.

It was a photograph.

An old one.

Marcus and my father.

Together.

At a business meeting.

But I had never seen it.

I looked closer.

Marcus looked younger.

Less polished.

Less confident.

My father was standing beside him.

Behind them was a building.

The original headquarters of Ellison Holdings.

On the back of the photograph was another handwritten note.

The day Marcus asked me for a second chance.

I looked at Marcus.

“What does this mean?””

His eyes moved to the photo.

And something changed.

Recognition.

“You found that?””

I froze.

“You know about this?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I stepped closer.

“What second chance?””

Marcus looked away.

“Nothing.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

His jaw tightened.

“I said it was nothing.””

Daniel interrupted.

“Emma, ask him why your father almost ended the partnership before your marriage.””

Marcus immediately turned toward the phone.

“Daniel, stay out of this.””

That reaction told me everything.

My voice became quieter.

“Why?””

Marcus didn’t speak.

“Why did my father almost end the partnership?””

He ran a hand through his hair.

For the first time, he looked exhausted.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just tired.

“Because he didn’t trust me.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because he thought I cared about the company more than I cared about you.””

The answer surprised me.

Because it was honest.

And somehow, that made it worse.

“Did he?””

Marcus looked away.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at him.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

The room felt colder.

“You don’t know if you cared about me?””

His eyes flashed.

“That’s not what I meant.””

“Then what did you mean?””

He stepped forward.

“I loved you.””

Past tense.

The word hung between us.

I noticed it.

So did he.

His face changed slightly.

“Emma…”

I raised my hand.

“No.””

I looked down at Lily.

“She deserves better than this.””

Marcus stared at the baby.

For a brief second, something human appeared on his face.

Regret.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“We should focus on the legal situation.””

I turned toward her.

The confidence had returned to her voice.

Interesting.

She was scared.

But she still thought she could negotiate.

“What legal situation?””

She crossed her arms.

“Whatever agreement you’re talking about, Marcus built this company.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

She frowned.

“He worked for it.””

“Yes.””

“But he created it.””

I shook my head.

“You really don’t understand.””

She smiled faintly.

“I understand enough.””

“No, you understand the story he sold you.””

The room went quiet.

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“Is that true?””

He didn’t answer.

That was the first time she looked uncertain.

Not about me.

About him.

Daniel spoke again.

“Emma, there is one more thing.””

I closed the folder.

“What?””

“The emergency protocol requires immediate temporary transfer of executive authority.””

Marcus went completely still.

“No.””

Daniel ignored him.

“The board has already been notified.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You cannot do that.””

“I can,” Daniel replied calmly.

“You don’t have authority.””

“I represent the Ellison Family Trust.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“You think a piece of paper gives you power?””

Daniel’s response was simple.

“No.””

A pause.

“The fact that you signed it does.””

Marcus looked at me.

“You’re doing this because I hurt you.””

I held his gaze.

“No.””

I looked around the mansion.

At the place where my life had been packed into two suitcases.

“I’m doing this because you forgot who you were hurting.””

He said nothing.

Then his phone rang.

He looked down.

The color drained from his face.

“What is it?”” Vanessa asked.

Marcus didn’t answer.

He opened the message.

I watched his fingers shake.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Slowly, he turned the phone around.

A notification from the company’s internal system appeared.

*EMERGENCY GOVERNANCE REVIEW INITIATED.*

Underneath it:

*Temporary authority reassigned pending trust investigation.*

Marcus looked at me.

The man who had ordered me out of my own home.

The man who thought I was powerless.

“You planned this.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I held Lily closer.

“My father did.””

Then Daniel spoke one final sentence through the phone.

“Emma, there’s something else you need to know before you make any decisions.””

I looked at the screen.

“What?””

Daniel hesitated.

And when he finally spoke, I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

“Your father didn’t just create this agreement to protect your inheritance.””

A chill ran through me.

“What else did he protect?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“He protected evidence.””

I stopped breathing.

“Evidence of what?””

A long silence.

May you like

Then:

“Of what Marcus did before he married you.””
