Chapter 8: The Identity They Stole

The room felt like it was moving.

I read the sentence again.

Daniel Mercer is not Charles Mercer's son.

Impossible.

I looked at Evelyn.

She looked away.

That was enough.

"You knew.""

Her silence answered.

"You knew?""

Evelyn swallowed.

"Yes.""

My voice became sharper.

"How long?""

"Since Daniel was a child.""

I stared at her.

"Then who is he?""

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was buried deeper than any financial crime.

Maya took the letter.

"Claire, we need to understand what this means.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

I looked at Evelyn.

"You tell me.""

She sat down.

Her hands trembled.

"Daniel was born Daniel Hart.""

The name meant nothing.

Until it did.

"Jonathan's mother's family name.""

Maya looked confused.

"Explain.""

Evelyn took a breath.

"Charles wanted an heir. When Jonathan became too independent, Charles believed he needed another son he could control.""

"Daniel.""

"Yes.""

"But Daniel wasn't his son?""

"No.""

The room went silent.

"Charles took Daniel in.""

"Why?""

Evelyn looked at the floor.

"Because Daniel was easier to manipulate.""

The words made my skin crawl.

"He raised a child to become a weapon.""

Evelyn nodded.

"And then Daniel became worse than anyone expected.""

I thought about the wedding.

His hand crushing mine.

His voice telling me I belonged to him.

He hadn't learned that from nowhere.

He had been built.

But that didn't excuse him.

A monster could be created.

It could also choose what it became.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

Everyone froze.

Maya signaled for me to answer.

I did.

"Hello?""

Silence.

Then his voice.

Calm.

"You're with my mother.""

I didn't respond.

"You found the archive.""

"How do you know?""

A quiet laugh.

"Because I wanted you to.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why?""

"Because you were never supposed to marry me.""

I gripped the phone.

"What?""

"You think the wedding was about control?""

"Wasn't it?""

"No.""

His voice changed.

Almost sad.

"The wedding was about access.""

I felt cold.

"What are you talking about?""

"You were the only person who could legally reach certain accounts.""

My heart sank.

"My company.""

"Your company.""

The words felt poisonous.

"I needed Bennett Architectural Consulting.""

"You used me.""

"Yes.""

He said it without hesitation.

That shocked me more than a lie.

"Why admit it?""

"Because you're going to find out anyway.""

A pause.

Then he whispered:

"Your mother wasn't trying to expose my family.""

I stopped breathing.

"She was trying to expose me.""

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Everyone saw my expression.

"What did he say?"" Maya asked.

I looked at the letter.

At my mother's warning.

At the photograph.

"He knows about my mother.""

Evelyn stood.

"That's impossible.""

"No.""

I looked at her.

"Nothing about this family is impossible anymore.""

That evening, another piece of evidence arrived.

A package.

No sender.

Inside was an old cassette tape.

A handwritten label.

CLAIRE.

My mother's voice.

I knew before I played it.

The recording was damaged.

Static filled the room.

Then a woman's voice.

My mother.

"If you're hearing this, Daniel has already found you.""

I covered my mouth.

"Claire, listen carefully.""

Static.

"He will tell you he was forced.""

Static.

"He will tell you Charles made him do it.""

A pause.

"He is lying.""

I looked at everyone.

My mother's voice continued.

"The truth is worse.""

The tape clicked.

May you like

Then one final sentence played.

"Daniel Mercer killed Jonathan.""
