Chapter 14: The Truth Nobody Wanted
Evelyn returned before we found her.
She walked into my father's house alone.
She knew.
She always knew when the story changed.
I held up the photograph.
Her face collapsed.
"Daniel sent this.""
She closed her eyes.
"I knew he would.""
"Did you kill Jonathan?""
The question hung in the air.
My mother stood beside me.
My father behind us.
Three people who had spent decades protecting secrets.
Evelyn looked exhausted.
"No.""
Relief came too quickly.
Then she continued.
"But I helped him disappear.""
Silence.
"Why?""
"Because Jonathan was dying.""
Nobody spoke.
"What?""
Evelyn sat down.
"The night everyone thought he died, he was already injured.""
"By Charles?""
She nodded.
"Charles attacked him.""
"Then why hide it?""
"Because Charles would have killed him.""
She looked at me.
"And he would have killed anyone who helped him.""
"So you staged his death.""
"Yes.""
I thought about Daniel.
The photograph.
The accusation.
"He knew.""
Evelyn nodded.
"Daniel knew.""
"Then why did he blame you?""
"Because Daniel needs someone else to carry his guilt.""
The words felt true.
Evelyn continued.
"After Jonathan survived, Daniel found out.""
"What did he do?""
"He threatened him.""
My hands tightened.
"Then Jonathan disappeared again.""
Everyone was silent.
Maya looked at the evidence.
"Daniel has been rewriting history for years.""
Evelyn nodded.
"He learned from Charles.""
The pieces finally connected.
Daniel wasn't trying to uncover the truth.
He was trying to replace it.
Then the lights went out.
Everyone froze.
A sound came from upstairs.
A door closing.
Maya reached for her weapon.
"Stay here.""
But I already knew.
Daniel.
He wanted the final scene.
He always did.
We found him in my old bedroom.
The room where I had grown up.
The room filled with memories he had never touched.
Until now.
Daniel stood by the window.
"Beautiful place.""
I stared at him.
"Leave.""
He smiled.
"Still giving orders.""
"You broke into my house.""
"I came to talk.""
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"You came to control the ending.""
His smile faded.
For the first time, he looked tired.
"Do you know what my whole life was?""
I didn't answer.
"A performance.""
He looked around.
"Charles created me.""
"No.""
I said it quietly.
"He influenced you.""
His eyes hardened.
"Same thing.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You chose.""
That hurt him.
I saw it.
"You don't understand.""
"I understand more than you think.""
I stepped closer.
"You hurt me because you wanted power.""
Silence.
"You lied because you wanted control.""
Another step.
"You destroyed people because you thought pain made you important.""
Daniel looked away.
And for one second, I saw something human.
Then it disappeared.
"You sound exactly like her.""
"My mother?""
"No.""
His voice became colder.
"Yourself.""
The police arrived moments later.
Daniel didn't run.
He surrendered.
But before they took him away, he looked at me.
"You won.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
I looked at everyone.
May you like
"Everyone who survived you won.""
For the first time, Daniel had no response.
