Chapter 5: The Truth My Father Buried

I didn't remember the drive home.

I only remembered opening the front door.

My father was sitting in the kitchen.

Waiting.

The moment he saw my face, he knew.

"What did he tell you?""

I froze.

Not "What happened?""

Not "Are you okay?""

What did he tell you?

The same question.

The same fear.

Another secret.

"Dad.""

His shoulders dropped.

"I wanted to tell you.""

"When?""

He looked away.

"After the wedding.""

I laughed softly.

A painful sound.

"After I married into a family built on lies?""

"Claire.""

"No.""

I placed Daniel's message on the table.

"Tell me about my mother.""

My father became pale.

For years, I had known almost nothing about her.

She died when I was young.

That was the story.

A simple story.

A story I never questioned.

But now I knew better.

Stories were weapons.

And my father had been holding one.

"Your mother worked for Mercer Holdings.""

I stared.

"What?""

"She was an accountant.""

The room went silent.

"She found something.""

My chest tightened.

"What?""

My father rubbed his face.

"Fraud.""

Of course.

Another person who discovered the truth.

Another person who disappeared.

"She was going to expose them.""

"What happened?""

My father's eyes filled with regret.

"She died.""

The answer felt too easy.

Too familiar.

"How?""

He couldn't answer.

"Dad.""

He looked at me.

"It wasn't an accident.""

The words broke something inside me.

My entire life had been built around a lie.

"My mother knew Jonathan?""

"Yes.""

"She knew about his death?""

"Yes.""

"And you?""

"I knew she was in danger.""

I stepped back.

"You let me grow up believing she abandoned me.""

"I was trying to protect you.""

"By lying?""

His voice broke.

"By keeping you alive.""

Silence.

Outside, rain began hitting the windows.

For the first time, I saw my father not as the person who failed to protect me.

But as someone who had spent years carrying fear alone.

Then the front door opened.

Everyone froze.

Sophie stood in the hallway.

Behind her was someone I never expected.

Evelyn Mercer.

My father's face changed.

"Evelyn.""

She looked older than she had at the wedding.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Broken.

"I need to talk to Claire.""

My father stepped forward.

"Absolutely not.""

Evelyn looked at him.

"You know what happens if she doesn't hear me.""

I stared between them.

"What are you talking about?""

Evelyn reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

"Daniel thinks he controls everything.""

She looked at me.

"He doesn't.""

I didn't move.

"Why should I believe you?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because I was the person who helped him hide it.""

The room went silent.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

"I know where Jonathan Mercer is.""

I felt my blood freeze.

"That's impossible.""

Evelyn looked at the envelope in her hand.

"No.""

She whispered.

"What's impossible is that you still think Daniel is the worst person in this family.""

She placed the envelope on the table.

Inside was a photograph.

A recent photograph.

A living man.

A man I had seen before.

A man everyone believed was dead.

Jonathan Mercer.

And standing beside him was Daniel.

Alive.

Smiling.

Planning.

Waiting.

Evelyn looked at me.

"Your wedding wasn't the beginning of your nightmare, Claire.""

She paused.

"It was the moment they realized you were dangerous.""

I stared at the photograph.

Because beneath it was one final note.

May you like

Three words.

FROM YOUR MOTHER.
