Chapter 15: The Story I Finally Owned

One year later, St. Augustine's Chapel looked different.

The stained-glass windows were the same.

The wooden pews were the same.

But I was not.

I returned there alone.

Not for a wedding.

Not for forgiveness.

For closure.

The Mercer case had become one of the biggest corporate crime investigations in the state.

Charles Mercer was arrested overseas.

Evelyn testified.

Jonathan rebuilt his life quietly.

Lily took control of the inheritance her father left her.

And Daniel Mercer was sentenced for everything he had done.

The world finally heard the truth.

Not the version he created.

Mine.

My mother's.

The victims'.

The chapel doors opened behind me.

My mother walked in.

She smiled.

"Still hate this place?""

I looked around.

"No.""

She raised an eyebrow.

"I thought you would.""

"I used to.""

I touched the altar.

"But this is where I stopped being afraid.""

She smiled.

"I was proud of you that day.""

I looked at her.

"You weren't even there.""

She shook her head.

"I was.""

I froze.

"What?""

"I was outside.""

My mother smiled sadly.

"I watched you walk away from him.""

A tear escaped before I could stop it.

"I wish you had come inside.""

"I know.""

She hugged me.

This time, I didn't feel like I was hugging a stranger.

I was finally meeting my mother.

Not the memory.

The person.

Later that afternoon, I opened a letter Daniel had sent from prison.

I almost threw it away.

Almost.

But I read it.

Claire,

You were right about one thing.

I thought power meant controlling the story.

I was wrong.

Power was surviving after someone tried to erase you.

I hated that you proved me wrong.

But I respected you for it.

There was no apology.

No excuse.

Just the closest thing Daniel Mercer would ever write to the truth.

I folded the letter.

Then I put it away.

Not because I forgave him.

Because I no longer needed him to understand me.

For years, Daniel believed he had locked me inside a cage.

He was wrong.

The cage was never made of walls.

It was made of fear.

And the moment I stood in front of two hundred people and showed them the truth, I broke it.

I thought Daniel Mercer took my life away.

He didn't.

He gave me the reason to take it back.

May you like

And the story he spent years trying to control?

It belonged to me now.
