Chapter 7: The Man Behind The Empire

We didn't sleep that night.

Nobody trusted the darkness.

Maya arranged protection outside the house, but I knew something she didn't.

Guards could stop someone from breaking through a door.

They couldn't stop someone who had already been inside your life for years.

Daniel knew my routines.

He knew my fears.

He knew exactly how to make me doubt myself.

But now I understood something.

Fear only worked when you believed you were powerless.

I didn't.

At sunrise, Maya arrived with new information.

"Charles Mercer left the country.""

I stared at her.

"When?""

"Six hours ago.""

"How?""

"He has private aircraft access.""

Of course he did.

People like Charles Mercer didn't run from consequences.

They simply changed locations.

"What about Daniel?""

Maya placed another file on the table.

"He's still in the city.""

"Waiting?""

"Most likely.""

I opened the file.

Inside were photographs.

Daniel entering buildings.

Meeting people.

Moving money.

But one photograph stopped me.

Daniel wasn't alone.

He was with Jonathan.

Again.

This time, the date was recent.

Two months earlier.

I looked closer.

Jonathan looked older.

Tired.

But alive.

"Where was this taken?""

Maya answered.

"An abandoned Mercer property.""

I looked up.

"Why would Daniel meet him there?""

"That's what we're trying to find out.""

A sound came from the hallway.

Evelyn.

She had stayed the night.

She looked at the photograph.

Then closed her eyes.

"I know that place.""

Everyone turned.

"What?""

She sat down.

"That was where Charles kept records.""

"What records?""

"The real ones.""

Maya leaned forward.

"Explain.""

Evelyn hesitated.

For years, she had protected her family.

Now she was finally choosing herself.

"Charles never trusted computers. He believed digital records could be stolen.""

"So he kept paper records?""

"Yes.""

"Where?""

She looked at the photograph.

"Under the property.""

The room became quiet.

A hidden archive.

A physical history of every crime.

Maya immediately stood.

"We need to go there.""

But I stopped her.

"No.""

Everyone looked at me.

"Daniel expects us to search for documents.""

Maya frowned.

"Then what do you suggest?""

I looked at the photograph.

At Daniel.

At Jonathan.

"He wants us to find something.""

Evelyn studied me.

"And what do you think it is?""

I remembered Daniel's words.

You don't understand what you're doing.

He hadn't sounded worried because I found evidence.

He sounded worried because I found the wrong evidence.

"He left a trail.""

Maya nodded slowly.

"A trap?""

"Maybe.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"But people who control stories always keep backups.""

That afternoon, we went to the abandoned Mercer property.

The building stood outside the city, surrounded by empty land.

A place forgotten by everyone.

Except the people who needed it.

Inside, dust covered everything.

The air smelled like old paper and mold.

Evelyn led us downstairs.

A hidden door sat behind a wall panel.

Nobody spoke.

Maya opened it.

Inside was a room.

Shelves.

Boxes.

Thousands of documents.

Charles Mercer's secrets.

We began searching.

Property transfers.

Financial records.

Old contracts.

Then I found a box with my name on it.

BENNETT.

My hands froze.

Maya noticed.

"Claire.""

I opened it.

Inside were documents from my company.

But they weren't stolen documents.

They were from before I ever met Daniel.

There was a letter.

My mother's name was written on it.

I opened it carefully.

Claire,

If you are reading this, then they failed to keep you away from the truth.

I stopped breathing.

My mother knew.

She knew I would find this.

The letter continued.

Daniel Mercer is not who he appears to be.

I looked at Maya.

Everyone became silent.

May you like

The next line made my blood run cold.

He is not Charles Mercer's son.
