Amused

Chapter 9: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

I didn’t remember walking to the folder.

I only remembered seeing my mother’s name.

Written in black ink.

On a file that should never have existed.

For years, I had believed my mother’s death was the cruelest thing life had given me.

A disease.

A diagnosis.

A goodbye that came too quickly.

I had spent years accepting that pain.

Because pain was easier when it had a reason.

But now Vivian Mercer was standing in front of me, telling me my mother had been connected to a secret.

A secret that killed her.

I opened the folder.

The first page was a report.

The second was a photograph.

My mother.

Standing beside Richard Mercer.

My hands shook.

“She knew him?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Did you know?””

He shook his head immediately.

“No.””

I believed him.

Not because I trusted him completely.

But because his face showed genuine shock.

My mother had been another secret hidden from him.

Daniel continued.

“Your mother, Evelyn Bennett, was one of Richard Mercer’s most trusted employees.””

I swallowed.

“My mother never worked for Mercer Holdings.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Not officially.””

That answer bothered me.

“What does that mean?””

“It means she helped Richard investigate problems inside the company.””

I turned another page.

There were financial records.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

And at the bottom of one document…

Vivian Mercer’s signature.

My stomach dropped.

“She was stealing.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Vivian finally spoke.

“You have no idea what you’re looking at.””

I turned toward her.

“I’m looking at proof.””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“You’re looking at a story created by people who wanted to destroy me.””

I laughed.

“Everyone wants to destroy you?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You think I’m the villain because it’s easier.””

“No.””

I held up the document.

“I think you’re the villain because every person in this room has evidence.””

For once, Vivian had no immediate answer.

That felt like victory.

Small.

But real.

Daniel pointed to another page.

“There’s more.””

I looked down.

A handwritten note.

My mother’s handwriting.

I knew it instantly.

My chest tightened.

She had written:

*If anything happens to me, find Claire. Protect her from Vivian.*

I stopped breathing.

Protect me.

From Vivian.

My mother knew.

All those years ago.

She knew exactly who Vivian was.

I covered my mouth.

Ethan came closer.

“Claire.””

I stepped away.

Not because I didn’t want him near me.

Because I didn’t know how to feel anymore.

My mother had spent her final days protecting me.

And I had walked willingly into the same family she feared.

Vivian watched me.

And then she said the cruelest thing possible.

“Your mother was paranoid.””

I looked at her.

“She was dying.””

“She was confused.””

“She was afraid.””

Vivian smiled.

“Fear makes people invent monsters.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

My voice became steady.

“Sometimes fear is the only thing that tells people the truth.””

Something changed in Vivian’s expression.

A tiny crack.

A moment of realization.

She understood.

I wasn’t the frightened bride from the morning anymore.

The woman wearing her mother’s dress had changed.

I wasn’t here to be accepted.

I was here to uncover what happened.

Daniel pulled out another document.

“There’s one more thing.””

Everyone looked at him.

“This is the document Richard wanted released if anything happened to him.””

Ethan frowned.

“What is it?””

Daniel handed it over.

Ethan read it.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

I moved closer.

“What does it say?””

He looked at me.

“It names the person who helped my mother hide everything.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Ethan turned the page.

His expression became one of disbelief.

“No.””

“What?””

He handed me the paper.

I looked down.

And my heart stopped.

Because the name written there was not Vivian.

Not Richard.

Not Charlotte.

It was someone I knew.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had been standing beside me all day.

I whispered:

“Emma?””

The room went silent.

Ethan looked confused.

“Your best friend?””

I nodded slowly.

“No.””

But the document was right there.

My best friend’s signature.

A date.

A payment.

Proof that Emma had received money from Mercer Holdings.

I felt the world collapse.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me sadly.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“This is impossible.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“Claire, wait.””

But I couldn’t hear him.

Because suddenly every conversation replayed in my head.

Every time Emma told me she was worried.

Every time she warned me.

Every time she knew something she shouldn’t have known.

The person who had stood beside me as my closest friend…

Might have been helping destroy my life.

Then my phone rang.

Emma’s name appeared on the screen.

Everyone stared.

I answered slowly.

“Hello?””

There was silence.

Then Emma spoke.

Her voice was shaking.

“Claire.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why is your name on a Mercer document?””

Another silence.

Longer.

Heavier.

Then she whispered:

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I froze.

“Protect me?””

“Yes.””

“By taking money from Vivian?””

Her breathing changed.

“Claire, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice broke.

“I need you to tell me the truth.””

A pause.

Then Emma said:

“I wasn’t working for Vivian.””

I looked at Ethan.

At Charlotte.

At the document.

“Then who?””

Emma’s answer came quietly.

“I was working for your mother.””

The room went completely silent.

And then she said:

“Claire… your mother didn’t die because she was sick.””

My fingers went cold around the phone.

“She died because she found out who really controlled the Mercer family.””

I whispered:

“Who?””

Emma took a shaky breath.

Then said:

“The person who raised Ethan.””

May you like

The call ended.

And everyone slowly turned toward Vivian.
