Amused

Chapter 2: The Name He Buried

For five seconds, I couldn’t move.

The phone remained pressed against my ear even though Ethan was gone.

Emma watched me carefully.

“What did he say?””

I lowered the phone.

“He told me to leave.””

Her eyes widened.

“Leave?””

“He said not to go to the ceremony.””

The happiness disappeared from her face.

“Claire…”

“I need answers.””

I walked back to the vanity and picked up the envelope.

The photographs inside suddenly felt heavier.

Like they weren’t paper.

Like they were pieces of a life I had never known existed.

Emma stood beside me.

“Are you sure you want to look?””

I opened the envelope.

The first picture showed Ethan and Charlotte at a restaurant.

The second showed them standing outside a house.

The third showed Charlotte holding a little girl.

I looked closer.

The little girl was about four years old.

“She has a daughter?””

Emma’s expression changed.

“I didn’t know that.””

I looked at the photograph.

Ethan was kneeling beside the child, smiling.

There was something painful about that smile.

It wasn’t the smile of a man pretending.

It was the smile of someone who loved them.

A horrible thought entered my mind.

Did Ethan have another family?

Did I spend three years believing I was building a future with him while he was protecting another one?

The door opened.

My father walked in.

“Claire?””

I quickly hid the photographs.

But he saw my face.

My father had always been able to read me.

Even when I was little.

Even when I tried to pretend I wasn’t hurt.

“What happened?””

I looked at him.

For a moment, I wanted to tell him everything.

But today was supposed to be the happiest day of his life too.

He had spent months planning this wedding.

He had cried when he saw my dress.

He had told everyone his daughter had found a good man.

“I’m just nervous.””

My father stepped closer.

“No.””

His voice softened.

“That’s not nerves.””

I looked down.

“Dad…”

He touched my shoulder.

“Claire, whatever this is, don’t stand at that altar because everyone else expects you to.””

The words surprised me.

Because they were exactly what I needed to hear.

Before I could answer, there was another knock.

This time, it wasn’t Emma.

It wasn’t Ethan.

A woman’s voice came from the hallway.

“Claire Bennett?””

Everyone in the room froze.

I opened the door slightly.

A woman stood outside.

She was younger than I expected.

Maybe in her early thirties.

Dark hair.

Pale face.

Tired eyes.

But I recognized her immediately.

Not because I had met her.

Because I had seen her face in the photographs.

Charlotte Hayes.

My hand slipped from the door.

She looked at me.

Then at my wedding dress.

And her eyes filled with tears.

“Oh my God,” she whispered.

I couldn’t speak.

The woman who was supposed to be Ethan’s past was standing in front of me on my wedding day.

“Why are you here?”” I asked.

Charlotte looked over her shoulder.

Like she was afraid someone would see her.

“Because I tried to warn Ethan.””

My heart raced.

“About what?””

She looked at my dress.

Then at me.

“About Vivian.””

The name changed everything.

I stepped back.

“What does Vivian have to do with you?””

Charlotte’s lips trembled.

“She ruined my life.””

The hallway suddenly felt silent.

“My marriage?””

Charlotte shook her head.

“No.””

She looked directly into my eyes.

“Your marriage.””

I felt anger rise inside me.

“You were engaged to him.””

“Yes.””

“Then why are you helping me?””

Charlotte looked down.

Because whatever she was about to say hurt her too.

“Because Ethan didn’t leave me.””

My breathing stopped.

“What?””

“He thought I left him.””

I stared at her.

“That makes no sense.””

“I know.””

She reached into her bag.

“I didn’t want to come here today.””

She pulled out a small folder.

“But when Vivian realized I still had these…”

She handed it to me.

My fingers touched the paper.

“What is it?””

Charlotte looked toward the end of the hallway.

“She lied about why I disappeared.””

I opened the folder.

Inside was a legal document.

The top line made my stomach drop.

*Confidential Custody Agreement.*

I looked at Charlotte.

“Who is the child?””

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“Ethan’s daughter.””

The room went completely silent.

I looked at the document again.

Then at her.

Then back at the name written on the page.

My voice barely worked.

“Why didn’t Ethan tell me he had a daughter?””

Charlotte whispered:

“Because he doesn’t know.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“What do you mean he doesn’t know?””

Before she could answer, a familiar voice came from behind me.

“Claire.””

I turned.

Ethan stood at the end of the hallway.

His face was pale.

His eyes moved from me.

To Charlotte.

To the folder in my hand.

And for the first time since I met him…

I saw fear.

Not guilt.

Not anger.

Fear.

“Charlotte,” he whispered.

She looked at him.

“I’m sorry, Ethan.””

He took one step forward.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“No, you can’t be here.””

I held up the document.

“Why?””

Ethan looked at the paper.

Then at me.

And his silence answered before his words did.

“Claire…”

I stepped back.

“Tell me the truth.””

He opened his mouth.

But before he could speak, Vivian’s voice echoed from behind him.

“What a touching reunion.””

Everyone turned.

Vivian stood at the end of the hallway.

Smiling.

And in her hand was another envelope.

May you like

“Now,” she said calmly.

“Let’s tell Claire what really happened.””
