Chapter 1: The Woman Behind The Door
The knock came again.
“Claire?”” Emma’s voice floated through the door.
“Are you okay in there?””
I looked at Vivian.
For the first time since she entered the room, she looked nervous.
Not guilty.
Not afraid.
Careful.
That was worse.
Because Vivian Mercer was never careless.
She had planned every word.
Every pause.
Every expression.
She wanted me to break before I reached the altar.
I pushed the photographs back into the envelope and placed them on the vanity.
“Claire?”” Emma called again.
“I’m coming in if you don’t answer.””
I walked toward the door.
Vivian’s voice followed me.
“Remember what I said.””
I stopped.
“What?””
Her reflection stared back at me through the mirror.
“Sometimes the truth doesn’t destroy a marriage.””
A small smile appeared on her lips.
“Sometimes it reveals that there was never a marriage to begin with.””
My fingers tightened around the doorknob.
I wanted to turn around.
I wanted to demand answers.
I wanted to throw those photographs back in her face and tell her she had lost.
But something stopped me.
A tiny, painful voice inside me.
Because there was one question I couldn’t silence.
Who was Charlotte Hayes?
And why had Ethan never said her name?
I opened the door.
Emma stood there with a makeup brush in one hand and a worried expression on her face.
“There you are,” she said.
“I thought you disappeared.””
I forced a smile.
“Just needed a minute.””
Emma looked past me.
Her eyes landed on Vivian.
The temperature in the room seemed to drop.
“Mrs. Mercer.””
Vivian smiled politely.
“Emma.””
They had met many times.
But everyone who knew Vivian understood one thing.
She didn’t have friends.
She had people she considered useful.
Emma stepped inside.
“Is everything okay?””
Vivian picked up her purse.
“Perfect.””
The way she said it made my stomach twist.
She walked toward the door.
Before leaving, she paused beside me.
“Congratulations, Claire.””
It sounded almost sincere.
Almost.
Then she whispered so quietly only I could hear:
“Enjoy your last few minutes of believing.””
The door closed behind her.
I stood there frozen.
Emma immediately noticed.
“Claire.””
I looked at her.
“Did something happen?””
I wanted to say no.
I wanted to smile.
I wanted to be the bride everyone expected.
But my voice betrayed me.
“Who is Charlotte Hayes?””
Emma’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
“You know that name?””
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?””
Emma placed the makeup brush down.
“Claire…”
“Emma.””
I grabbed her hand.
“Tell me.””
She looked toward the closed door.
Then back at me.
“I thought you knew.””
The words felt like a punch.
“Knew what?””
Emma swallowed.
“Ethan dated someone before you.””
I stared at her.
“That’s not a secret. Everyone has a past.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“It wasn’t just a girlfriend.””
The room suddenly felt too small.
“What was she?””
Emma hesitated.
“She was supposed to marry him.””
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because my brain refused to accept it.
“Supposed to?””
“Claire, I don’t know the details.””
“Then why do you know her name?””
Emma looked uncomfortable.
“My cousin worked at Mercer Holdings. Charlotte was around the family all the time.””
I felt my hands going cold.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought you knew.””
Everyone thought I knew.
That was the part that hurt.
Everyone except me.
I turned away and stared at myself in the mirror.
The woman looking back was wearing the dress my mother had chosen.
A dress meant for a new beginning.
But suddenly it felt like a costume.
A beautiful costume hiding something rotten underneath.
My phone buzzed.
I looked down.
Ethan.
I stared at his name.
My fiancé.
The man I loved.
The man whose voice I had fallen asleep listening to for three years.
I answered.
“Hey,” he said softly.
I closed my eyes.
“Hi.””
“You sound nervous.””
I almost laughed.
Of course he noticed.
Ethan always noticed when I was upset.
That was one of the reasons I loved him.
“Ethan…”
“What happened?””
I looked at Vivian’s envelope sitting on the vanity.
I could ask.
I could confront him.
I could end the uncertainty.
But I wanted to hear it from him.
Not from his mother.
Not from old photographs.
From him.
“Did you ever know someone named Charlotte Hayes?””
Silence.
Not a normal silence.
A dangerous one.
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Ethan?””
Finally, he spoke.
“Who told you that name?””
And in that moment, I knew.
I knew before he said another word.
Because people don’t react like that when they have nothing to hide.
I whispered:
“So there is a story.””
Another silence.
Then Ethan said something that made my entire world shift.
“Claire, you need to leave the hotel.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
“Listen to me.””
His voice was different now.
Urgent.
Afraid.
“Do not walk into that ceremony.””
I stared at my reflection.
The dress.
The veil.
The flowers.
Everything I had dreamed about.
“Why?””
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
Then I heard him whisper:
“Because my mother didn’t show you those pictures to hurt you.””
A pause.
“She showed them to make sure you would never find out what happened after Charlotte disappeared.””
My heart pounded.
“What happened?””
May you like
The line went quiet.
Then the call ended.
