Chapter 3: The Secret At The Altar
The hallway became a battlefield without anyone raising their voice.
That was Vivian’s specialty.
She didn’t need to scream.
She didn’t need to threaten.
She simply appeared with a secret and watched people destroy each other.
Ethan moved toward her.
“Mother.””
Vivian smiled.
“Don’t look so surprised.””
“You shouldn’t be here.””
“Neither should she.””
Her eyes moved toward Charlotte.
Charlotte flinched.
I noticed.
And that tiny reaction told me everything.
Whatever happened between them, Vivian still had power over her.
I stepped between them.
“No more games.””
Vivian looked amused.
“Games?””
“Yes.””
I held up the documents.
“You brought me pictures. Charlotte brought me legal papers. Ethan is standing here looking terrified.””
My voice shook.
“But nobody is telling me the truth.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Claire, I was going to.””
“When?””
He had no answer.
“That’s what I thought.””
His face fell.
“Please listen to me.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Three years, Ethan.””
I touched my wedding dress.
“Three years I believed I knew you.””
“You do know me.””
“Do I?””
The question hurt him.
I saw it.
Good.
Because I was hurting too.
Charlotte stepped forward.
“Claire, Ethan isn’t the person you think he is.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Charlotte.””
She looked away.
“I’m sorry.””
Vivian smiled.
“There it is.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
“The truth.””
She opened the envelope in her hand.
Inside was a single document.
“I knew this day would come.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Mother, stop.””
Vivian ignored him.
She handed me the paper.
I looked down.
The title immediately caught my attention.
*Paternity Test Results.*
My hands shook.
I looked at Ethan.
“What is this?””
He didn’t answer.
Vivian did.
“Proof.””
My eyes scanned the page.
Then I saw the name.
Ethan Mercer.
My stomach twisted.
The result confirmed what Charlotte had said.
The child was his.
I looked up.
“You have a daughter.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Claire…”
“You have a daughter and you didn’t know?””
He looked broken.
“I swear to you, I didn’t.””
“How could you not know?””
His voice became quieter.
“Because Vivian made sure I never found out.””
The hallway went silent.
I looked at Vivian.
She didn’t deny it.
That was the first shocking thing.
The second was the expression on her face.
She looked proud.
“You were always too emotional, Ethan.””
Ethan stared at her.
“You took my daughter from me.””
“I protected this family.””
“No.””
His voice hardened.
“You protected your reputation.””
Vivian’s smile faded.
And suddenly, I saw the real woman underneath.
Not the elegant mother.
Not the charity queen.
Someone colder.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed for you.””
Charlotte laughed quietly.
A broken sound.
“You sacrificed everyone except yourself.””
Vivian looked at her.
“You should be grateful I fixed your mistake.””
Charlotte’s eyes filled with anger.
“My daughter was never a mistake.””
That sentence changed the room.
Because it wasn’t about money anymore.
It wasn’t about status.
It was about a child who had grown up without her father.
I looked at Ethan.
“Why didn’t you know?””
He swallowed.
“After Charlotte and I separated, my mother told me Charlotte left because she didn’t want our life anymore.””
Charlotte shook her head.
“I never left.””
Ethan looked at her.
“She told me you took our daughter and disappeared.””
Charlotte’s eyes filled with tears.
“She told me you didn’t want us.””
The realization hit all of us at once.
Vivian had destroyed two lives.
Maybe three.
I looked at the wedding hall doors at the end of the corridor.
Guests were waiting.
Music would start soon.
Everyone expected a bride to walk down the aisle.
But they didn’t know what was happening behind the door.
They didn’t know the man waiting for me had just discovered he had a child.
They didn’t know his mother had built their family on lies.
They didn’t know my wedding dress had become the place where every secret came to die.
Vivian stepped closer.
“Claire.””
I looked at her.
“You have a decision to make.””
Her voice was calm again.
“You can walk away and destroy Ethan’s life.””
I stared at her.
Or you can forgive him.””
She smiled.
“And prove you are different from Charlotte.””
I felt something inside me snap.
Because even now…
Even after everything…
She was still trying to control the story.
I looked at Ethan.
Then Charlotte.
Then the wedding hall.
The doors opened slightly.
A staff member appeared.
“Claire, everyone is ready.””
The music began.
The entire world was waiting.
I looked down at my mother’s dress.
The dress she chose for me.
The dress Vivian tried to destroy.
And I finally understood something.
This wedding was never about proving I belonged.
It was about discovering who had spent years trying to make sure I didn’t.
I lifted my head.
And when I walked toward those doors…
I knew I wasn’t walking toward a marriage.
I was walking toward the truth.
But before I reached the altar, my phone vibrated one more time.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
*Claire, don’t trust Ethan. He’s hiding the worst part.*
And beneath the message was a photograph.
A photograph taken only yesterday.
Of Ethan.
May you like
With Vivian.
Standing over a grave.
