Chapter 6: The Voice From The Past
The attorney’s voice stayed in my head long after the call ended.
A recording.
Proof.
The two things Vivian had always feared.
A witness.
And evidence.
Daniel Cross agreed to meet us in a private conference room inside the hotel.
The same hotel where I was supposed to become a Mercer.
The irony wasn’t lost on me.
A place built to celebrate a marriage was now becoming the room where we buried it.
Ethan sat across from me.
For twenty minutes, neither of us spoke.
Charlotte sat beside him.
Not close.
Not touching.
Just there.
A reminder of everything he lost.
And everything he never knew.
Finally, Ethan whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
The words were simple.
But they carried years of damage.
“I know you are.””
He looked surprised.
“But that doesn’t fix it.””
His eyes lowered.
“I know.””
That answer hurt more than excuses would have.
Because part of me wanted him to fight.
To tell me I was wrong.
To tell me love mattered more than secrets.
But instead, he accepted the pain.
And somehow, that made everything harder.
The door opened.
An older man entered.
Gray hair.
Black suit.
A leather briefcase in his hand.
“Mr. Mercer.””
Ethan stood.
“Daniel.””
Daniel looked at him sadly.
“I wish we were meeting under different circumstances.””
“So do I.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Claire Bennett?””
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“Your mother-in-law doesn’t know I have this.””
I looked at the briefcase.
“What exactly is it?””
He placed a small recorder on the table.
“Your father-in-law left instructions.””
Ethan frowned.
“My father?””
Daniel nodded.
“He knew something would happen.””
The room went still.
“What does that mean?”” Ethan asked.
Daniel looked at him.
“Richard Mercer believed he was being watched.””
Ethan’s face changed.
“My father never told me that.””
“He didn’t trust anyone.””
Daniel looked at Vivian’s empty chair.
“Not even his own family.””
I felt a chill.
“Play it.””
Daniel pressed a button.
Static filled the room.
Then a man’s voice.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakably serious.
Richard Mercer.
“If you are hearing this, it means I failed.””
Ethan froze.
His father’s voice continued.
“Vivian will tell everyone I was sick. She will say my death was natural.””
A pause.
“But if you are listening, you need to know the truth.””
Ethan covered his mouth.
Daniel watched him carefully.
Richard continued.
“Vivian has been moving money from company accounts. She has been creating documents. She believes she can control everyone around her.””
The recording crackled.
“But the worst thing she did was not stealing from me.””
A pause.
“It was what she did to Charlotte Hayes.””
Charlotte started crying silently.
Richard’s voice became softer.
“She took a child from her mother.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry, Charlotte.””
The recording continued.
“I confronted Vivian. I told her I would expose everything.””
A long silence.
Then:
“She threatened me.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Ethan looked at him.
“Threatened him with what?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
The recording continued.
“She said if I destroyed her, she would destroy Ethan.””
The next words were barely audible.
“She said she would make sure my son believed I betrayed him.””
I looked at Ethan.
He looked broken.
Because he finally understood.
His entire life had been shaped by one person’s manipulation.
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Then the door opened.
Vivian stood there.
I don’t know how long she had been listening.
But judging by her face…
Long enough.
“You really are pathetic, Daniel.””
Daniel stood.
“Mrs. Mercer.””
She looked at the recorder.
Then at Ethan.
“You believe that?””
Ethan’s voice was cold.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””
That was the first time Vivian looked hurt.
Not angry.
Hurt.
Because she had finally lost something she thought she owned.
Her son’s loyalty.
“You think your father loved you more than I did?””
Ethan stared.
“You lied to me.””
“I protected you.””
“You destroyed my life.””
“I saved your future.””
“No.””
His voice shook.
“You saved yourself.””
Vivian looked at me.
Then smiled.
A small, terrifying smile.
“You still don’t understand.””
I stood.
“What?””
She stepped closer.
“The recording proves I made mistakes.””
I frowned.
“Mistakes?””
“Yes.””
She looked at Ethan.
“But it does not prove the one thing you should really be asking.””
Nobody spoke.
Vivian turned toward me.
“Why did Ethan stay with you?””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
She smiled.
“Ask him.””
I looked at Ethan.
“What does she mean?””
He looked away.
And once again…
Silence.
That unbearable silence.
The one that had followed me all day.
“Ethan?””
His voice was barely a whisper.
“Claire…”
I felt my chest tighten.
“What did you do?””
He looked at me.
And the answer on his face terrified me.
Because for the first time…
May you like
I wasn’t afraid of what Vivian had done.
I was afraid of what Ethan had hidden.
